<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DESCRIPTION Process for preparing mixtures of hydroxyl derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons with controlled proportions of the constituents of these mixtures.
The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of mixtures of hydroxylated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons, which process consists in reacting the aromatic substrate concerned with hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of a synthetic zeolite containing from 0.1% to 7% by weight of titanium oxide; the use of a zeolite containing a proportion of titanium in the range mentioned (and preferably in the range 2% to 4%) makes it possible to obtain, with high yields, a mixture of final hydroxylated products in which the proportions of the components relative to each other are rigorously controlled.
It is known that aromatic hydrocarbons can be converted into their hydroxylated derivatives, using hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of synthetic zeolites containing heteroatoms both as substituents in the crystal lattice and as exchanged constituents, and that such a reaction leads, in most cases, to an indefinite mixture of different products; for example, when a hydroxyl group is introduced into the phenol according to what has just been said, a mixture of pyrocatechol and hydroquinone is obtained.
The hydroxylation reactions of aromatic hydrocarbons can be carried out using a wide variety of materials from the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
zeolite type; this is how, for example, that French patents n 81 17023 and n 83 04502 describe a hydroxylation process implemented in the presence of a synthetic material constituted by crystalline silica modified by the presence of elements which enter in the constitution of the crystalline network of silica by replacing some silicon atoms.
Among the modifying elements, one can mention here Cr, Be, Ti, V, Mn, Fe and Co.
According to these patent applications, the reaction of the aromatic hydrocarbon and hydrogen peroxide is carried out at a temperature chosen in the range from 80 ° C. to 120 ° C., in the presence of the hydrocarbon alone or in the presence of a an auxiliary solvent which allows said hydrocarbon to mix, at least partially, with hydrogen peroxide. As the solvent, water, methanol, acetic acid, acetone, isopropanol or acetonitrile can be used.
The hydrocarbon substrates mentioned are chosen from a large number of substances: phenol, toluene, anisole, xylenes, mesitylene, benzene and benzene derivatives, etc.
Other materials of the zeolite type, which can be used in a hydroxylation process in accordance with the process mentioned above, are those described in European patent No. 0266825 and in the published European patent application No. 0265018. The European Patent No. 0266825 describes a porous synthetic crystalline material, of the zeolite type, containing oxides of silicon, titanium and gallium, and corresponding, in its anhydrous and calcined state, to the formula p HGaO. q TiCb. SiO in which "p" has a value greater than zero and less than or equal to 0.050, and "q" has a value greater than zero and less than or equal to 0.025. The H + ion of HGaO can be at least partially replaced by cations.
EMI2.1
For its part, the published European patent application No. 0265018 relates to zeolites having a pore diameter of 0.5 to 0 1.2 mm (5 to 12 A), bound with amorphous oligomeric silica. The
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
zeolites are first dispersed in an aqueous solution of silica and alkyl ammonium hydroxide, and the suspension thus obtained is then quickly dried. The use of the zeolite type materials described in the patents and patent applications mentioned above makes it possible to solve the important problems previously noted in the processes for direct hydroxylation of aromatic hydrocarbons, such as for example the low selectivity with respect to peroxide. hydrogen or relative to the hydrocarbon that is reacted.
However, the reaction leads to a final mixture of hydroxylated products which are not always easily separable, or whose proportions are not suitable for the subsequent uses envisaged.
The Applicant has now found that it is possible to implement a process for the hydroxylation of aromatic hydrocarbons, while obtaining a final mixture of products in proportions fixed beforehand or strictly controlled, if used, in the implementation during said reaction, a zeolite type material, chosen from the materials mentioned above, but characterized by a titanium content strictly located within a very precise interval, this same reaction being carried out under conditions of particularly high loads.
Consequently, the subject of the present invention is a process for the preparation of mixtures of hydroxylated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons, mixtures the constituents of which are in controlled and / or fixed proportions, which process consists in reacting the substrate concerned with hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of a zeolite type material, containing heteroatoms and titanium in a proportion, calculated in Ting, comprised in the range going from 0.1% to 7% by weight, said
EMI3.1
reaction further being carried out with a charge ratio of ce with hydrogen peroxide to the aromatic substrate equal to or greater than 0.2.
Particularly interesting results can be obtained when said proportion of titanium, mentioned above, is in the range from 2% to 4% by weight.
The reaction is also carried out at a temperature situated in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the interval going from 60 C to 150 C, in the presence of the only hydrocarbon substrate or, preferably, in the presence of an auxiliary solvent chosen from tert.-butyl alcohol, methanol, ethyl acetate, l acetate, butyl acetate, propyl acetate and dimethyl carbonate.
Aromatic substrates which can be used are phenol, anisole, toluene, xylenes, mesitylene, benzene and ethylbenzene.
Obviously, any zeolite type material can be used, provided that it contains titanium in the percentages mentioned above. However, it is advantageous to use materials described in the patents and patent applications mentioned above, to which reference will be made to find there all the possible details of description of these materials.
The following examples will illustrate in more detail the inventive ideas of the present invention, as well as the advantages which can be obtained by carrying out the hydroxylation reaction according to the particular process according to the present invention.
