<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Corrosietest : S02-test in vochtige lucht.

Method for manufacturing by electrolytic or electroless deposition of a composite with a metal matrix and microcapsules enclosed therein, and the resulting composite
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing composites consisting of a metal matrix with microcapsules containing a specific material enclosed therein, and to the composite.
Incorporating microcapsules into metal, microcrystalline and / or amorphous composites that can act as coatings opens up new application possibilities based on the unique combination of the material properties of the metal matrix and the material contained in the microcapsules.
It is known in the art to incorporate solid, inert particles into a metal matrix by means of a codeposition method by electrolytically or electrolessly depositing these particles together with a metal on a support, thereby forming a coating. This known method cannot be used if the particles to be enclosed consist of a liquid and / or are not inert during the electrolytic or electroless separation.
An alternative to enclosing liquids in a metal involves fabricating a metal via sinter metallurgy, in which open pores are formed in the metal which can then be impregnated with a liquid under pressure. Such products have the drawback that due to the open
EMI1.1
pores decrease the material strength and further the degassing and sweating can remove the liquid absorbed by impregnation.
The object of the invention is to provide a method for manufacturing a composite with a matrix of a metal and microcapsules enclosed in the matrix
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with which, in particular, liquids can be enclosed in the metal, which method has the above-mentioned drawbacks, or which has a lesser extent, and which, moreover, allows working at low temperatures (for instance 10-950C).
This is achieved according to the invention by manufacturing a composite with a matrix of a metal or a metal alloy, and the matrix
EMI2.1
enclosed microcapsules which form a) for manufacturing the microcapsules containing the material and b) enclosing the microcapsules during the formation of the matrix from an electrolyte containing the metal or alloy elements.
The invention is based on the insight that the material, in particular a liquid, can be incorporated into the composite via electrolytic or electroless deposition of the metal, if the material has previously been incorporated in a microcapsule.
In principle, any material whose properties deviate from that of the matrix and which does not interfere with the manufacturing process can be included as the material contained in the capsules. Liquids are preferred, but solids and even gases are usable.
Composites made according to the invention exhibit unique material properties. For example, an increase in the wear resistance of a metal by the incorporation of lubricants, an increase in the corrosion resistance by the incorporation of corrosion inhibitors released by the corrosion process itself in the metal matrix, protection against algae growth by the incorporation of "anti-fouling" substances, the indication of wear by the detection of the materials released from the microcapsules upon breaking open of deeper microcapsules, etc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Releasing the material from or on a metal surface can be a result of mechanical impact, friction, and thermal and / or chemical attack processes.
In the first method step, according to the invention, microcapsules are produced which contain the material to be incorporated in the composite. Manufacturing this

microcapsules number of different known micro-encapsulation techniques (Mico-encapsulation by Rober E.-Sparks pp. 470-793 in Kirk Othmer, Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Vol. 15, third edition (1979).
Specific examples are air suspension coating, centrifugal extrusion, vacuum metallization, spray drying, coacervation techniques, interfacial polymerization, in-situ polymerization and matrix polymerization.
The properties of the composite are partly determined by the contents of the microcapsules, by their size, size distribution and concentration. For example, the microcapsules have a particle size ranging from 0.050 to 50 microns.
If the microcapsules coincide with the. metal matrix, the microcapsules should be kept in suspension in the electrolyte, unless working by sedimentation code position or brush plating.
Furthermore, the microcapsules should be insoluble in the electrolyte, but should be wettable thereby, optionally after addition of suitable surfactants and / or dispersants. During the installation of the microcapsules they must not break open as a result of chemical reactions, heat development and / or hydrolysis. Full inertia of the microcapsules is not necessary as long as the microcapsules are stable for the time required to fully enclose the microcapsules in the metal matrix.

The microcapsule digestion can be performed with a known vibrating, perforated bottom plate or by means of gas bubbling. The degree of agitation depends on the difference in specific gravity between the microcapsules and the electrolyte used.

The microcapsules are deposited on a brass support, which is incorporated in a rotating electrode arrangement (rotation speed 25 to 75 rpm), using a copper ... "" ". 10 A / dm2.
Figure 2, a raster electron microscopic (REM) image (0.25 kx magnification) of a coating obtained in Experiment 2, shows the different stages of incorporation of the micro-capsules by the differences in brightness between the different microcapsules. Due to the conductivity of the surrounding copper, the microcapsules already partially incorporated will exhibit a lower yield for emitting secondary electrons than the microcapsules that are not or only partially incorporated in the copper matrix. As a result, the latter microcapsules will light up more strongly in the REM image than the already partially built-in microcapsules. Also note the texture of the deposited copper around and between the microcapsules. Such a structure means that for a limited thickness of the deposited coating, the coating retains a certain porosity.
Figure 3 is a REM image (1.51kx magnification) of a coating in the same manner as in Experiment 2, obtained with a copper sulfate bath (Cu2 SO4m: 200g / L, H2804: 20g / L; bath temperature 250C). Figure 3 shows
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
that the copper here completely encloses the microcapsules and in this case the composite coating will be both gas and liquid tight. The microcapsule volume content for the coating of Figure 2 was found to be 51% (determined by qualitative image analysis).

Experiment 3 Install the microcapsules using electroless copper.
The microcapsules obtained in Experiment 1 were enclosed in a copper plating formed by electroless deposition. The microcapsules are added to a copper bath of the following composition:
CuSO 4. 5H20 0.05 M
EDTA 0.15 M
NaSO 4 0.25 M
CHOH 0.074 M
NaCN 3 10-4 M
NaOH to pH 12. 5
Copper is deposited electrolessly on a copper support, which has been pre-rinsed with 5 M NaOH at 60oC. The temperature during electroless deposition was 25 DEG C. and the bath is bubbled with argon, which also expels oxygen from the electrolyte solution.
Experiment 4 Installation of corrosion inhibitors.
Corrosion inhibitors stop corrosion in very low concentrations. For a particular type of corrosion inhibitors, their action relies on the formation of a protective film on the surface of the metal. The film has a small thickness, which makes this form of corrosion protection vulnerable. As soon as a defect occurs, underlying metal is exposed to the corrosive environment. Further corrosion cannot be stopped. However, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
corrosion inhibitors built into the metal matrix, then corrosion inhibitors released from the microcapsules during further corrosion will effectively arrest the corrosion.
A layer of copper was coated on a support according to

. 2 or 3 containing microcapsules manufactured according to experiment 1, which microcapsules contain as material a solution of benzotriazole in water. Subsequently, the corrosion properties of the copper coatings according to the invention and known copper coatings were investigated in a corrosion test.
Corrosion test: S02 test in moist air.
Hereby it is examined by visual assessment whether the corrosion of the copper coatings is retarded by the microcapsules present in the copper coatings according to the invention filled with benzotriasol. Clearly, a difference in color is noticeable between the surfaces of the copper layers according to the invention and those of the prior art, indicating a different corrosion behavior.
Experiment 5 Metal foam.
According to experiment 2 or 3, polystyrene microcapsules are built into copper from a copper sulphate bath. The copper composite formed was then heat treated at 400 ° C in argon. A volume expansion of at least 2% was measured. Incorporating microcapsules with a smaller diameter will give rise to a larger volume expansion, because according to the theory of elasticity the stress that a cavity can withstand before flowing decreases with its diameter.
Such metal foams can be used in the manufacture of laminates that combine low weight with high strength.
