Abstract

The system for the protection of oil from freezing or gelling includes use of electric resistance heating elements along the fuel supply pipes. A self-regulating resistance strip is used, and is applied directly to the pipes, valves and filters. The strip has dimensions matching those of the pipes. The strip is made of a material having a temp.-dependent resistance, so that no other control is necessary, since the strip automatically adjusts its output power to the ambient conditions. The strip may be wrapped twice around a 12 cm valve, and three times around a 20 cm filter in order to deliver the appropriate power.

Description

  Description

  Description

New use of a self-regulating electric heating system for the protection against freezing of the fuel oil supply means.

Preliminary remark: In order to keep a certain conciseness for the purposes of the invention, two generic names have been used, which should be defined below.

The word "gel" designates the freezing of water particles in suspension in the fuel oil as well as the freezing thereof. The word "boiler" designates all heating means without restriction (boiler, forced air heating, convector, oven, stove ...).

The invention consists of a new use and a new presentation of a self-regulating electric heating tape for the protection against freezing of the valves, filters and supply lines of boilers and other oil heating devices.

By self-regulating electric heating tape is meant a tape whose electrical resistance varies as a function of temperature. This tape does not require any thermostatic control because it adapts its own output power, point by point over its entire length.

Currently, self-regulating electric heating tapes keep the piping networks of certain buildings or industries at a constant temperature or protect them from freezing.

Self-regulating electric heating tapes are permanently installed on the pipe networks
(mainly water). The lengths installed are generally large and the tapes are, in fact, part of the electrical installation of the building.

The object of the present invention is to allow the use of these self-regulating electric heating tapes for the protection against freezing of the pipes, valves and oil filters between the external tank and the building.

These self-regulating electric heating tapes are applied directly to the pipes and wrapped around the valves and filters to protect from freezing or freezing.

The advantages obtained by this invention consist in ease of installation (which is achievable by the user himself, in most cases), a limited cost price and a low consumption of electrical energy.

The self-regulating electric heating tape is cut to dimensions that correspond to the lengths of the pipes, valves and filters to be protected from freezing or freezing.

The installation is simplified by the fact that the assembly is supplied complete, at the desired length, equipped with the necessary electrical insulation, a plug and a connection cable with earth connection.

The cost price is limited: the heating tape used is of the "parallel" type and, unlike existing "series" systems, it can be cut to the length strictly necessary.

The self-regulating nature of this tape makes it unnecessary to install a thermostat and limits power consumption to what is strictly necessary.

The invention being the new use of the self-regulating heating electric cable and its customized delivery, ready for use, will be illustrated by the example of embodiment below.

Example

Or an oil tank outside a building and connected to a boiler by 4 meters of copper pipe. The installation also includes a valve and a filter at the outlet of the tank.

The perimeter of the valve is 12 centimeters and that of the filter measures 20 centimeters.

It is desired to surround the valve and the filter respectively with 2 and 3 turns of self-regulating electric heating tape.

So you have to use

400 + (2 x 12) + (3 x 20) = 484 cm of ribbon.

The self-regulating electric heating tape is cut to the calculated length.

One end is isolated by means of a heat-shrinkable sheath. At the other end, connect a flexible electrical cable with an earth connection and a plug.

The assembly thus completed can be delivered to the user.

The user fixes the cable to the pipe to be protected using plastic collars, wraps it around the valve twice and around the filter 3 times, and then insulates everything.
