(6 bars) et 250 p. s. i. (17 bars).

EMI1.1
The present invention relates to improvements made to a percussion drilling device intended for drilling soil, more particularly a deep drilling device.
Percussion deep drilling devices are in! born by compressed air and divided into two main groups. A typical valve drilling device is described in European patent application na 83 200711. 6 and includes a flap valve which allows the application of compressed air on either side of the valve. a piston mounted in a cylinder which is arranged inside a protective sleeve. In this way, the piston can thus be set in reciprocating motion so as to repeatedly strike the end of a drilling tool mounted on the cylinder.
The operating pressure of such a drilling device is advantageously between 85%. s. i. (6 bars) and 250 p. s. i. (17 bars).
A typical drilling device without valve is described in European patent application no. 82 304174. 4 and includes an arrangement of openings made in the cylinder in order to exhaust the compressed air from one side to the other. of the piston, through an annular conduit disposed between the cylinder and the protective sheath, said openings being opened and closed by the piston itself according to a repeating cycle.
In general, valveless drilling devices are only suitable for operation at high pressure, while valve drilling devices can be adapted to operate in a wider range of pressures, but are more particularly suitable for operation at low pressure . However, when trying to ensure efficient operation of a valve drilling device, there are

sions and fairly high speeds, there is reason to re-

set the critical parameters of the drilling device with precision.
The object of the present invention is therefore intended; providing a valve type deep percussion drilling device which can operate effectively at air pressures of up to 300%. s. i. (24 bars).
The object of the present invention is achieved by a deep percussion drilling device which operates with compressed air and which comprises a rear head for the connection of said positive to a source of compressed air, a protective sheath secured to this rear head, a mandrel mounted on the opposite end of the protective sheath, intended to receive the drilling tool, an interior cylinder arranged inside the protective sheath and provided with a valve seat an extremist, a valve stem or stem extending inside the cylinder,
as well as a piston arranged inside the cylinder so as to be able to perform a reciprocating movement from a first position in which the stem of the valve engages in a bore made in the piston tate towards a second position in which a piston rod engages in a practical housing in the cylinder and strikes a drilling tool held by the mandrel, the dimensions being such that, for a 2 "(50.8 mm) drilling tool, the ratio the length of the piston stroke over the length of the valve stem is com-
EMI2.1
between 1,: 1 and 1,: 1 and the ratio of the length of the piston stroke to the length of the piston rod inside the housing at the moment when the piston hits the drilling tool ( the net length of the accommodation) is between 1,810:
1 and 1, 845: 1.
Preferably, the ratio of the length of the piston head to the length of the piston rod is between 1.56: 1 and 1.59: 1 and the ratio of the length of the piston rod to the net length of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
housing is between 1.48: 1 and 1.51: 1.
Advantageously, the ratio of the diameter of the piston head to the diameter of the piston rod is between 1.42: 1 and 1.45: 1, the ratio of the diameter of the piston head to the diameter of the bore practiced in the piston head is between 3.055: 1 and 3.085: 1, and 0 the ratio of the diameter of the face of the valve seat (interior dimension of the cylinder) to the diameter of the valve stem end of this) is. between 3, 09: 1 and 3, 12: l.
According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a deep percussion drilling device and provided with a valve, operating with compressed air, is constituted so as to meet the following critical parameters:

t has in depth 1, fitted with a valve having the arrangement according to the constituent elements. A connection to the rear head 2 constitutes the extreme element of the device which is connected, in operation, to the cord (not shown). Said fitting is followed by a spacer ring 3, a clamping ring 4, an eyelet (o-ring) 5 and a control valve arrangement which comprises a control valve 6, a spring 7, a valve cage 8 and an air adjustment plug 9. The main air valve has a flap valve 10 which rests on a valve seat 11 partially engaged in an inner cylinder 12 at the top thereof.
A piston 13 has a head 14 and a rod 15

which extends downwards from the head 14. An axial bore 16 is made in the head 14 of the piston in order to receive a tail 11a associated with the valve seat 11 and which extends towards the down from it. The piston rod 15 enters an axial bore
17 made in a housing 18 which is mounted inside the cylinder 12. The complete arrangement of the internal cylinder (and part of the valve seat 11) are mounted in a protective sleeve 19. The lower part of the drilling device comprises a split spacer 20 a retaining ring 21, a mandrel 22 and a drilling tool (not shown) mounted thereon.
The dimensions of the various parts of the drilling device and their mutual relationships are critical for efficient operation of the drilling device, especially when said drilling device is used at a fairly high pressure, for example. 350 p. s. i. (24 bars), which is considerably higher than the pressures used in the devices of the state of the art.
The length of the tail 11a is extremely critical. When running down, when the head of

This condition is analogous to that of the covering of valve openings in internal combustion machines or to that of a dead period of a diesel cycle machine. 11 in
EMI5.2
As a result, the recharge factor is very important, given that it constitutes a maximum frontal air cushion without being able to absorb energy from the downward impact.
The critical parameters to be set precisely are therefore (a) the ratio of the length of the piston stroke to that of the valve stem or stem, (b) the ratio of the stem length. piston over the net length of the housing, and (c) the ratio of the piston stroke to the net length of the housing.
Shortening the rod from 0.020 "(0.508 mm) to 0.030" (0.762 mm) would imply that the piston leaves the rod prematurely and that the recharging of the lower chamber persists in the formation of a cushion! n air having too high a resistance for the piston, creating heat and causing a loss of impact energy. Extending the rod from 0.020 "(0.508 mm) to 0.030" (0.762 mm) would imply that the piston leaves the tail rather late by delaying the preload of the lower chamber and thereby losing the upward thrust.
In the preferred embodiment, according to the present invention, the following specific dimensions allow the critical parameters described above to be obtained, expressed in terms of ratios.
