<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

EMI6.2
On

0 1 Method for obtaining the alkylidbne-l, I- -diphosphonic acids functionally substituted in I and their mixtures
The present invention relates to the chemistry of organic phosphorus compounds C-P bonding, particularly processes for the preparation of alkylidene-I, I-diphosphonic acid functionally substituted in I and mixtures thereof.
The products named find wide application as a complexing agent for the enrichment by flotation of non-sulphide ores such as caaaiterite, anatite, phosphorite, fluorine ores, etc. certain indicated acids find application in medicine.
There are a number of processes for the preparation of alkylidene-I, I-diphosphonic acids functionally eubstituted in I, their mixtures and their salts by interaction of carboxylic acids or their derivatives with trivalent phosphorus compounds under dehydrating conditions (cf. . Federal Republic of Germany patent no. 2943498).
Generally as inorganic compounds of trivalent phosphorus, a mixture of phosphorous acid and phosphor trichloride is used, the phosphorous acid is often obtained during aynthesis by hydrolyzing part of phosphorus trichloride by
EMI1.2
a calculated amount of water.
A general feature of carrying out these processes is the need to use carboxylic acid or its derivatives in large excess. This is linked to the fact that during the reaction in the dehydrating condition, polycondensed polyphosphonic dracid products are formed which are very viscous or solid compounds. To prevent thickening of the reaction mass as a result of training

polycondensation products. An excess of carboxylic acids or their derivatives must be used, which in turn leads to great technological difficulties. quea lieea eH. mid. nati. one of this excess.
Attempts to use inert diluents for this purpose are either ineffective (in the case of, for example, hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons poorly mixed with the polycondensed mass), or make the technological process excessively expensive as in the case of sulfone (Cf. ID Curry, DA Nicholson , OTQuimbly, Topics in Phosphorus Chemistry, 1972, 7. 75) difficulty in separating from the editorial body and making the elimination of the targeted product more complex. Besides this,
EMI2.2
the su. Lfoo. and in the reaction coadttons are partially reduced to volatile sulfur organic compounds.
There is also known a process for preparing derivatives of alkylidene-I, I-diphosphonic acids functionally substituted at I, namely I-oxyalkoylidene-diphosphonic acids. The process consists
EMI2.3
in this way a mixture of carboxylic acids having 6 & 10 carbon atoms and which are taken in double excess, is mixed with the trivalent phosphorus compounds under the dehydrating conditions. The mixture obtained is successively heated to a temperature of 110-150oC.
The need for prolonged and successive heating is dictated by an extraordinary sensitivity of the heater.
EMI2.4
action a. temperature. Faster heating does not control the reaction. This creates serious difficulties.
The cbau. ffage finished, the reaction mixture is maintained a. the indicated temperature from 5 hours to 15 minutes.
I1 results in polycondensates of I-oxyalkylidene-diphosphonic acids. The polycondensates obtained are then subjected to hydrolysis with an excess of water at a temperature of 80-110oC for 5-12 hours.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The I-oxyalkylidene-I, I-di-phosphonic acids formed are precipitated with the aid of or under the form of disodium salts with a yield up to 75%.
The process makes it possible to separate the targeted reaction products from the excess of carboxylic acids, however, filtration and subsequent washing of the precipitated disodium salts are quite difficult, require a great deal of time and a high consumption of the solvent.
In addition, the regeneration of the excess of carboxylic acids is also difficult to carry out from the technological point of view (cf. Great Britain patent No. 1469894, 1974).
It has therefore been proposed to create a process for the preparation of alkylidene-I, I-diphosphonic acids functionally substituted for I and their mixtures, a process which would simplify the technology of the process, increase its production and obtain the targeted products with a fairly high yield.
The solution consisted in proposing a process for the preparation of alkylidene-I, I-diphosphonic acids functionally substituted in I and in their mixtures by interaction of carboxylic acids or their derivatives on a carboxylic group with inorganic phosphorus compounds trivelent in dehydrating conditions at a temperature of 20-180 * C with Sar-

As indicated above, the reaction of the interaction of carboxylic acids or their derivatives according to the carboxylic group is carried out at a temperature

from 20-1800C. The choice of the temperature for carrying out the process depends on the stability of the starting materials and of the finished products of the reaction. Thus, for example, it is better to conduct the reaction with unsubstituted carboxylic acids at higher temperatures, since this considerably reduces the reaction time and increases the production of the process.
The use of the hydrochlorides of the nitrous bases in the quality of diluents makes it possible to decrease the quantity of carboxylic acids or their derivatives, and to use them practically all in the reaction by bringing the yield to the targeted products up to 100 % calculates on carboxylic acids.
In addition, the use of the indicated diluents reduces the sensitivity of the reaction to temperature, which makes it possible to easily control the process. Despite the fact that the hydrochlorides of the nitrous bases indicated are solid compounds

It is advantageous to use as hydrochlorides of nitrous bases hydrochlorides of aliphatic amines Da hydrochlorides of heterocyclic nitrous bases.
The proposed method of obtention of alkylidene-I, I--dipbosphonic acids functionally substituted for I and

of their mixtures makes it possible to considerably simplify the technology of the process without requiring the use of excess carboxylic acids and their subsequent separation from the reaction products, therefore it makes it possible to easily control the process (to carry out the above process at higher temperatures and to increase the production of the process thanks to the specific action of the hydrochlorides of the nitrous bases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The target product yield resulting from the carrying out of the proposed process is high enough and reaches 90-100%.
The possibility of passing the targeted acids into salts, the application of which is identical to that of the acids allows their easy transport in steel tanks to the consumer.
The process for the preparation of 1-1-, 1--diphosphonic alkyl acids functionally substituted at I and their mixtures is simple from the technological point of view and carried out as follows.
In an enamelled steel or titanium steel reactor, a carboxylic acid or sea derivatives in a carboxylic group are charged, water, the hydrochloride of a nitrous base, perfected in place of water a certain quantity of phosphorous acid and phosphorus is introduced successively the trichloride at a temperature of 20 to 180oC. it is maintained for two minutes until several hours. 11 then forms a reaction mixture containing the polycondensates of polyphosphonic acids.
The reaction mixture is passed by pressure into

EMI6.2
Depending on the destination, these acids or their mixtures are isolated by known techniques, for example by replacement of the solvent.
In the case of the use of producta viaes for the enrichment of ores they are passed in salts. For this, add soda or potash to the hydrolyzate up to a pH of 9-12. The nitrous base IL is separated from the solution formed and an aqueous solution of salts of targeted acids is obtained, which is used as such.
The nitrous base is quantitatively isolated. We
