"A DISPLAY DEVICE" INVENTION TITLE: DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION NO'S: Australian Provisional Patent Application Number PQ2740 filed on September 1999 The following Statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 2
TITLE
"A DISPLAY DEVICE" The present invention relates to a display device.
It is common to provide display devices to house posters or the like for various forms of advertising. Such display devices are required to be mounted in a variety of locations. It is a common occurrence that the display devices must be opened in order to change the item on display.
As these display devices are mounted in publicly accessible locations where they may be susceptible to theft or vandalism, it is also a requirement that they cannot be easily opened or removed. A commonly available form of display device uses a metal frame enclosing a clear window where the frame is secured to a suitable surface or bracket by screws or similar fasteners. This type of device has the disadvantage that removing the fasteners to access the item on display can be a time consuming exercise. It has the further disadvantage that it may be readily apparent to vandals or others as to how the display device is to be opened.
The present invention overcomes at least in part some of the aforementioned disadvantages of previous display devices.
o "°In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided a display device comprising: a frame; o0o an attachment means for securing the frame to a surface, the frame being arranged to be pivotally connected to the attachment means; and a latch means being provided for securing the frame to the attachment means; o000 0 00.0 roo o 3 wherein the latch means includes a latch member moveable by a magnetic means from a first position, in which the latch member engages with the attachment means preventing pivotal movement of the frame, to a second position in which the latch member disengages from the attachment means allowing the frame to be pivoted about the attachment means.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side cross-sectional view of a poster display device in accordance with the present invention in a secured position; Figure 2 is a side view cross-sectional of the poster display device of Figure 1 in a released position; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the poster display device of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the frame of Figure 5 cut through A-A.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4, there is shown a display device 10 including a frame 12 and an attachment means for securing the frame 12 to a mounting surface 28. The attachment means comprises, a first support member 14 and a second support member 16. The frame 12 includes a first elongate member 18, a second elongate member and first and second interconnecting members 22 and 24. The first and second elongate members 18 and 20 are arranged generally parallel to each other and each 20 include a first and a second end. The first interconnecting member 22 is endwise connected between the first ends of first and second elongate members 18 and 20. The second interconnecting member 24 is endwise connected between the second ends of fs a first and second elongate members 18 and ooo* oO..o 4 The first support member 14 includes a first planar section 26 arranged to be mounted against the mounting surface 28. Further the first support member 14 includes a transversely extending portion 32 adjacent an upper end thereof. The transversely extending portion 32 includes an upwardly extending lip 34 at an end remote from the planar portion 26.
The second support member 16 includes a second planar surface 34 arranged to be mounted against the mounting surface 28. The second planar surface 34 includes a plurality of apertures 36 provided to receive suitable fasteners (not shown), such as screws, to secure the second support member 16 to the mounting surface 28. Further, the second support member 16 includes an outwardly extending portion 38 adjacent a lower end thereof. The outwardly extending portion 38 is generally circular in crosssection and includes a groove 40 on a lower side, adjacent the mounting surface 28.
The first elongate member 18 of the frame 12 includes a first recess 42 adjacent an upper end thereof. The first recess 42 is arranged to receive the transversely extending portion 32 of the first support member 18. The first elongate member 18 further includes a second recess 44 extending upwardly from an upper surface of the first recess 42. Also provided is a latch member 46. The latch member 46 is receivable in the second recess 44 and is slidable between a first position in which it extends at least partially into the second recess 44 and a second position in which it is fully contained within the second recess 44. The latch member 46 is made from a magnetic material such as iron. The first elongate member 18 is made of a non-magnetic e material such as aluminium. Preferably, the latch member 46 is suitably coated, such *e* ***ee as nickel plated with a Teflon coating to prevent corrosion between the dissimilar metals of the first elongate member 18 and the latch means 46.
The first elongate member 18 includes also a first opening 48 on a lower surface thereof. The opening 48 is arranged to receive a seal member 52. The cross-sectional shape of the opening 48 preferably includes serrations on inner surfaces arranged to mate with complementary serrations on outer surfaces of the seal member 52. The seal member 52 is arranged to receive an upper end of a window portion Further, the elongate member 18 includes a first channel 27. Ends of the channel 27 are arranged to align with ends of similar channels in each interconnecting member 22 and 24. A joining member (not shown) may be inserted in each end of the channel 27 and be received in an end of the channel in the adjacent interconnecting member 22 or 24 to secure the elongate member 18 and interconnecting member 22 or 24 together.
The second elongate member 20 includes a second opening 49 on an upper surface thereof. The second opening 49 is arranged to receive the seal member 52 and window portion 50 in the same manner as the first opening 48. The interconnecting members 22 and 24 also include further openings and seals on inner surfaces such that the window portion 50 is held between the members of the frame 12.
The second elongate member 20 also includes a third recess 56. The third recess 56 has a generally circular cross-section arranged to receive the outwardly extending portion 38 of the second support member 16. The diameter of the third recess 56 is related to the diameter of the outwardly extending portion 38 such that when the outwardly extending portion 38 of the second support member 16 is contained within the third recess 56 (as shown in Figure the second elongate member 20 is secured tryo oo to the second support member 20 and may rotate about the outwardly extending 0.
000 0 6 portion 38 forming a hinge means 58. By rotating the second elongate member 20 to a position where the groove 40 of the outwardly extending portion 38 is adjacent a lower end of the third recess 56, sufficient clearance is created to remove the second elongate member 20 from the second support member 16.
The second elongate member 20 includes also a second channel 29 for connection to the adjacent interconnecting members 22 and 24 in the same manner as the first elongate member 18.
Also required for operation of the poster display device is a suitable magnet In use, the frame 12 is constructed of the first and second elongate members 18 and 20, interconnecting members 22 and 24 and window portion 50. The first support member 14 is secured to the mounting surface 28 by suitable fastening devices inserted through apetures 30. The second support member 16 is then secured to the mounting surface 28 parallel to and below the first support member 14. The distance between the first and second support members 14 and 16 is determined by the distances between the first and third recesses 42 and 56 of the frame 12. The magnet is placed on the upper end of the first elongate member 18 causing the latch member 46 to be drawn into the second position in which it is fully contained within the second recess 44.
The frame 12 is then positioned such that the outwardly extending portion 38 of the second support member 16 may be received within the third recess 56 of the second elongate member 20 as seen in Figure 2. A poster (not shown) is then placed behind the window portion 50 and the frame 12 is pivoted about hinge means 58 toward the mounting surface 28.
0. 0: ooo* *i 7 As it is pivoted, the transversely extending portion 32 of the first support member 14 is received within the first recess 42 of the first elongate member 18. When the first elongate 18 member is fully engaged with the first support member 14, the magnet is removed. The latch member 46 now slides into the first position and engages with the lip 34 of the transversely extending portion 32, securing the first elongate member 18 to the first support member 14 as shown in Figure 1.
To replace the poster, the magnet 60 is placed again on the upper surface of the first elongate member 18, drawing the latch member 46 back to the second position allowing the first elongate member 18 to disengage from the first support member 14.
The frame 12 can then be pivoted open about hinge means 58 to access the poster.
When in the secured position, the method for securing the frame 12 is unable to be determined by inspection of the display device 10. Without both a magnet 60 of a suitable strength and a knowledge of the workings of the display device 10, the frame 12 cannot be removed from the support members 14 and 16.
While this device has been described in reference to the display of posters, it will be appreciated that it may be used to display any suitable item.
Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention. o •.•go oS S S..o goS ooooS 55.5~ g oO o
