HEADWEAR

This invention relates to headwear.

More particularly, the invention relates to headwear which can be used to display a logo or trade mark for advertising or promotional purposes.

S• In many sporting events which are played outside, such as golf and baseball, the players wear peaked caps. Frequently the peaked caps include a logo which is normally placed on the front of the crown of the cap. When a player is interviewed by a television reporter, the camera frequently shows the face of the user but the crown of the cap and 15 logo are not visible in the picture.

An object of the invention is to provide a novel form of headwear wherein a logo or trade mark can be displayed and made visible for advertising or publicity purposes, even though the crown of the cap itself is not in the televised picture.

According to the present invention there is provided headwear having a crown and a peak or brim, characterised in that the peak or brim includes one or more light transmitting regions therein in the shape of a word, logo or other indicium whereby in use when the headwear is worn in sunlight by a user the peak or brim casts a shadow on the face of the wearer except in areas corresponding to said regions whereby an image of said word, logo or other indicium is visible on the face of the user.

Preferably further, said one or more light transmitting regions include an opening or openings in the peak or brim.

Figure 1 illustrates a cap 2 having a crown 4 and peak 6. The peak 6 includes a logo 8 which is located in a field 10 on the peak 6. The field 10 is chosen so that there is a reasonably high probability that an image of the logo 8 will be projected by direct sunlight onto the forehead of the wearer of the headwear.

Preferably, the inner edge 12 of the field 10 is in the range 10mm to 20mm from 10 the crown of the hat. Preferably the length of the field is from 10% to 75% of the width of the peak (as measured adjacent to the crown). The depth of the field 10 is preferably no more than about 50% of the depth of the peak or in the range from 1cm to In use, when the wearer of the headwear is facing the sun, as is normally the case when a television interview is made, an image 14 of the logo 8 will be projected onto the forehead 16 of the wearer. This will contrast significantly with the shadow 18 cast by the peak. Thus the image 14 of the logo will be highly visible on the forehead 16 of the wearer. This is particularly useful for advertisers, sponsors and parties wishing to attract publicity for their logo, trade mark or the like.

Normally the logo 8 is cut entirely through the peak 6. In some embodiments, however, light transmitting material such as transparent plastics could be used to achieve the same effect. In such an arrangement, the peak 6 may be made from transparent plastic material and printed with opaque ink, paint or the like except in the region of the logo 8.

Many modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Claims (9)

1. Headwear having a crown and a peak or brim, characterised in that the peak or brim includes one or more light transmitting regions therein in the shape of a word, logo or other indicium whereby in use when the headwear is worn in sunlight by a user the peak or brim casts a shadow on the face of the wearer except in areas corresponding to said regions whereby an image of said word, logo or other indicium is visible on the face of the user.

2. Headwear as claimed in claim 1 wherein said one or more light transmitting regions include an opening or openings in the peak or brim.

3. Headwear as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the crown and peak or brim are in the form of a peaked cap.

4. Headwear as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said peak or brim includes a logo field and wherein said light transmitting one or more light transmitting regions are located in said field.
