ORIGINAL
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT r Invention Title: Applicant: "PRODUCT PACKAGING AND DISPLAY" KODAK (AUSTRALASIA) PTY. LTD.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: 1 D0QW PRODUCT PACKAGING AND DISPLAY Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to product packaging and display and, in particular, to a packaging system for products to be displayed for sale, as well as a package of that system and a method for displaying the products. The packaging system, package and method are applicable to products such as rolls of unexposed photographic film intended to be displayed for retail sale on a hanging hook or display shelf, and it will be convenient to hereinafter disclose the invention in relation to that exemplary application. However, it is to be appreciated that the invention is not limited to that application.
Background of the Invention The following discussion to the background to the invention is intended to facilitate an understanding of the present invention. However, it should be appreciated that the discussion is not an acknowledgement or admission that any of the material referred to was published, known or part of the common general knowledge in Australia as at the priority date of the application.
Strips of unexposed photographic film are stored in roll form in canisters S. which can be loaded into cameras for exposure during camera use. Those canisters can be sold in a small capped container placed in outer packaging.
20 The container provides a light-tight chamber for the film as well as physical protection for both the film and canister between manufacture and end use, whilst the outer packaging carries trade dress and other information relating to .the film product.
In one form, the outer packaging includes a cardboard box for the film 25 container, and a header card extending from an edge of the box. The header card has a through hole allowing the package to be placed on a merchandise hanging hook in a retail store so as to suspend the packaged product from the hook for display. Usually the hook projects from a display board a distance sufficient to permit several packaged products to be placed on the hook one in front of the other. In this way, as each forward most product is removed from the hook for sale, the product immediately to the rear becomes visible and is presented for sale.
The header card extends upwardly from an upper rear edge of the box, and the hanging hole is located adjacent a card edge remote from the box. In W:kmaPROVKodakdoc this way, when the packaged product is displayed on a hanging hook, the box is spaced from the hook and projects forwardly of the header card. With this configuration, when a series of packaged products are placed on a hanging hook, adjacent boxes aligned with and abut one another along the hook. The maximum number of packaged products that can be placed on a hook is therefore limited to the number of boxes that can be positioned one in front of the other along the hook. At the same time, however, adjacent header cards are spaced apart a distance approximately equal to the depth of the box between those cards. That creates an unused space between the adjacent cards, the interposed box, and the overlying hanging hook.
Summary of the Invention It is an object of the present invention to provide a relatively simple packaging system that will enable an increased number of packaged products to be displayed in a given display space.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a relatively simple package for a product that will enable an increased number of packaged products to be displayed in a given display space.

Referring to the drawings, there is generally shown a packaging system 1 for displaying a product, such as rolls of photographic film (not shown), on a hanging hook H.
.o The packaging system 1 includes at least one first package 2, and at least one second package 3. One pair of packages 2, 3 is illustrated in Fig. 1 whilst two pairs of packages are illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be appreciated that 20 additional pairs can be included in the system 1.
Each package 2,3 includes support means 4 for supporting product.
Each support means 4 includes a container 5 in which the respective product is received for support. Each container 5 fully or partially houses the product in alternative embodiments. Thus, in one embodiment (as shown), the container completely encloses the product whilst, in another embodiment (not shown), the container 5 only partially surrounds the product so that some of the product projects from or remains exposed by the container Each support container 5 includes a box 6 in which the product is received and fully enclosed. This form of container 5 is particularly suitable for the exemplary application of packaging rolls of unexposed photographic film.
The box 6 is of any shape suitable to accommodate the product, although as shown is of a simple cuboid shape. With that particular shape the box 6 has spaced apart front and rear walls 7,8 extending between top and bottom walls 9,10, and the defined container space is closed with opposite end walls 11,12.
Wu~emROwcoda doc In this embodiment, the box 6 is the same size in both the first and second packages 2,3.
In this embodiment, each box 6 is composed of cardboard.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the relevant art that, in alternative embodiments (not shown) of the invention, the packages 2,3 can have different support containers 5. Those containers 5 can include a bag or tube in which the product is positioned, or a shell formed by a base such as a backing card and an overlying cover such as a blister overlay on the backing card.
It will also be appreciated that, in other embodiments (not shown) of the invention, different product support means 4 can be used. Selection of the support means 4 may depend on the product being packaged and displayed.
Alternative support means 4 includes a base such as a backing card to which the product is fastened, such as by a tie, staple or adhesive.
Each package 2,3 also includes display means 13 extending from the support means 4. Each display means 13 extends upwardly from the support means 4 so that the product depends from the display means 13 when hung for display purposes.
S:'o Each display means 13 includes a display member 14 extending upwardly from the product container 5. In this embodiment, the display member 20 14 is positioned to the rear of the container 5 so that the container 5 projects forwardly of the display member 14 when being displayed.
In this embodiment, each display member 14 includes a display card Each display card 15 extends upwardly from a rear edge 16 of the container box 6. In this embodiment, the display card 15 extends coplanar with the rear 25 wall 8 of the related container box 6.
Each display card 15 is of a generally rectangular shape, having opposite top and bottom edges 17,18, and opposite side edges 19,20 extending S. therebetween. The box 6 is located adjacent the bottom edge 18. It will be appreciated that the card 15 may have other shapes.
In one embodiment (not shown), each display card bottom edge 18 is the same length as the rear edge 16 of the container box 6 along which it extends, so that the card 15 has a width the same as the length of the container box 6.
In another embodiment (as shown), however, the bottom edge 18 of the card W: rtPROVWoakdC 8 is longer and so the card 15 extends laterally beyond the ends 11,12 of the box 6.
The display cards 15 of the first packages 2 extend a greater height above the containers 5 of those packages 2 than the height that the display cards 15 of the second packages 3 extend above the containers 5 of the second packages 3. That is, the length of the display cards 15 from the box top wall 9 to the top edge 17 of the display cards 15 is greater in the first packages 2 than the second packages 3. Where the bottom edge 18 of the display cards extends along the corner edge 16 of the container box 6 adjacent the top wall 9, then it is the overall length of the display cards 15 of the first and second packages 2,3 that differ.
In this embodiment, the display cards 15 are composed of cardboard.
The cards 15 may be manufactured separately and attached to the boxes 6, or manufactured integrally with the boxes 6, in alternative embodiments of the invention.
It will be appreciated that, in alternative embodiments (not shown) of the invention, the packages 2,3 will have different display members 14. Those display members 14 may include display strips, tabs or lines extending from the containers.
20 In one preferred embodiment (as shown), the packaged products are displayed for sale by hanging from an elongate, horizontally extending hanging hook H projecting from a display board. To enable that display, the display eoooo *****members 14 each include a facility 21 by which each packaged product can be hung on the hook H.
S" 25 In this embodiment, the hanging facility 21 includes at least one hole 22 in each display card 15 and through which the hook H extends to support the package 2,3. The holes 22 are in the same position in all of the display cards S* 15. In this embodiment, a single hole 22 is provided, being positioned adjacent the top edge 17 of the display cards 15 and centrally along that edge 17. The holes 22 may be of any suitable shape, including round or elongate.
When hanging the packages 2,3 on an elongate hook H, they are arranged alternatively one in front of the other and orientated so that all of the front walls 7 of the container boxes 6 face forwardly of the display board. The second packages 3 are positioned in the spaces S defined between adjacent WUXROVAJodakLdDc 9 first packages 2, with each second package 3 nesting with an immediately preceding first package 2 in the row. Depending on the location of the holes 22 in the display cards 15, the container boxes 6 of the second packages 3 may touch or be spaced from the container boxes 6 of the first packages 2.
In this preferred embodiment, the display members 14 are shaped and sized so that when a first and second package 2,3 are nested together, the display member 14 of the second package 3 does not extend beyond the edge boundary of the display member 14 of the first package 2. Thus, in the case of display cards 15, the display card 15 of the or each second package 3 has a width and height so as to not extend beyond the top edge 17 or side edges 19,20 of the display card 15 of the or each first package 2. In one embodiment (as shown), all of the display cards 15 have the same width, but the card 15 of the or each second package 3 is shorter, so that the top edge 17 of that card does not extend above the top edge 17 of the card 15 of the first package 2 with which it is nested. The card top edge 17 of the second package 3 may coincide with, or extend beneath, the card top edge 17 of the first package 2 with which it is nested.
In an alternative preferred embodiment (not shown), the packaged products can be displayed for sale by placing on a horizontal display shelf. That 20 is particularly so with packages 2,3 having a container box 6 and a display card In that embodiment, the first packages 2 are arranged one in front of the other in a row, with the bottom walls 10 of the boxes 6 resting on the display shelf, and the packages 2 orientated so that the front walls 7 of the boxes 6 and 25 the display cards 15 all face forwardly of the shelf for display purposes. The first packages 2 are positioned close to one another, and the front wall 7 of each package 2 may abut the rear wall 8 of each succeeding package 2 in the :o row.
In that embodiment, the second packages 3 are arranged one between each adjacent pair of the first packages 2, with the same orientation as the first packages 2. The container boxes 6 of the second packages 3 sit on top of the container boxes 6 of the first packages 2, so that the bottom wall 10 of a second package container box 6 will bear on the top wall 9 of the container box 6 of an associated first package 2. The display cards 15 of each pair of those W AMe PROVW(odakdoc packages 2,3 will extend in parallel, abutting or adjacent, relationship. Thus, the packages 2,3 form nested pairs arranged in front of one another in the row.
It will be appreciated that this nesting arrangement of packages 2,3 can be extended to include subsequent packages that nest successively one with the other, including at least one third package that nests with the second package 3. The number of packages that can be nested together with depend on the space S available between adjacent first packages. That space S will, in turn, depend on a number of factors including the size of the containers 5 and the length of the display members 14 of the first package 2.
The product packaging system of the present invention enables an increased number of packaged products to be displayed in a given display space. The system provides more efficient utilisation of that valuable space, allowing greater flexibility in the products, including their variety, that can be displayed in the given space.
That efficiency of product display is achieved without any loss in the appearance or display of the products. In particular, the system need not interfere with the trade dress or other information carried by the packaging and presented to potential customers and other observers of the products.
Finally, it is to be understood that various alterations, modifications 20 and/or additions may be made to the product packaging system, product package and product display method without departing from the ambit of the present invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
