"DOOR AND WINDOW FRAMES" ADDRESS FOR SERVICE
ALTERED
INVENTION TITLE: DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION NO'S: Australian Provisional Patent Number PQ4291 filed on November 26, 1999 The following Statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us: 2
TITLE
"DOOR AND WINDOW FRAMES" The present invention relates to door and window frames and, in particular, to an elongate member for a jamb or head of a door or window frame.
In WO 97/42390 there is disclosed a door frame which includes an elongate member having a base plate, a door stop which extends in a first direction from the base plate and side walls which extend in a second opposite direction from the base plate. The configuration is such that when the elongate member is fixed to a door opening defined by studs and plasterboard sheets, the side walls extend adjacent an outer surface of the plasterboard sheets. The side walls are provided with perforations to permit application of a skim coat of plaster to the side walls to conceal the presence of the side walls.
While this type of elongate member facilitates provision of a door frame with :concealed elongate member side walls, the elongate member is time consuming and cumbersome to install since it is necessary to apply plaster to a significant area of the door frame.
The present invention seeks, therefore, among other things, to provide an elongate member for a jamb or head of a door or window frame which overcomes the above mentioned disadvantage.
eoeoo 20 In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, there is provided an elongate member for a jamb or head of a door or window frame, said member including a base plate, a stop member extending in a first direction from the base plate, and a side plate extending in a second generally opposite direction from the base plate, said side plate being disposed inwardly of an end of the base plate remote from the stop member 3 such that the base plate and the side plate define a portion of substantially T-shaped transverse cross section, the arrangement being such that, in use, when the elongate member is fixed relative to a door or window opening such that the stop member extends inwardly of said opening, the base plate and the side plate define a receiving portion adapted to receive a sheet portion and thereby substantially conceal the side plate.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic transverse cross sectional view of a portion of a door frame incorporating an elongate member in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the elongate member shown in Figure Figure 3 is a diagrammatic perspective view of an end portion of the elongate member shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the end portion mitred so as to fit with an adjacent similarly mitred elongate member; Figure 4 is a diagrammatic front view of a corner portion of a door frame incorporating the mitred elongate member shown in Figure 3; ***Figure 5 is a diagrammatic perspective view of an elongate member in accordance with an alternative embodiment of the present invention for use with a window frame; 20 and Figure 6 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of a portion of a window frame incorporating the elongate member shown in Figure 4 Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a portion 10 of a door frame for use in an internal wall of a building. The portion 10 of the door frame is shown in transverse cross section.
The door frame includes an elongate member 12 which in this example is a first door jamb of the door frame, a door frame stud 14 and plasterboard sheets 16 defining internal walls of the building.
The elongate member 12 includes two base plates 18, a generally centrally disposed door stop 20 extending, in use, towards the door opening and side plates 22 extending, in use, away from the door opening.
The configuration of the base plates 18 and the side plates 22 is such that each base plate 18 and corresponding side plate 22 defines a substantially T-shaped portion.
Each T-shaped portion defines a side projection 24 integral with and parallel to a respective base plate 18 and extending from a respective side plate 22 to an end of the respective base plate 18 remote from the door stop 15 In use, the side plates 22 are fixed relative to the stud 14 by any suitable fixing means, o••o• S•for example by screws or nails.
Each side plate 22 and corresponding side projection 24 defines a receiving portion 0shaped so as to receive a sheet of plasterboard 16 as shown in Figure 1.
It will be understood that the length of each side projection 24 is selected so as to 20 correspond with the thickness of the desired plasterboard sheet 16 when the sheet of plasterboard 16 is fixed relative to the stud 14.
It will also be understood that by virtue of the configuration of the elongate member 12, the side plates 22 locate, in use, between the stud 14 and the plasterboard sheets 16 and are concealed from view. As a result, it is only necessary to apply a minimal amount of plaster to conceal the join shown at 29 in Figure 1 between each plasterboard sheet 16 and adjacent side projection 24.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, an end portion 27 of each elongate member 12 of the door frame may be mitred so that each door jamb and adjacent door head fit together in a substantially perpendicular configuration.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6, there is shown a portion 28 of a window frame shown in transverse cross section, the window frame incorporating an elongate member 30 in accordance with an alternative embodiment of the present invention.
The window frame includes the elongate member 30 which in this example is a first window jamb of the window frame, a window frame stud 32 and a plasterboard sheet 31.
The elongate member 30 includes a single base plate 34, a window stop 36 extending, in use, in a direction towards the window opening, and a single side plate 38 extending, in use, in a direction away from the window opening.
The base plate 34 and the side plate 38 define a portion of substantially T-shaped 4 cross section. The base plate 34 and the side plate 38 also define a side projection integral with and parallel to the base plate 34 and extending from the side plate 38 to an end of the base plate 34 remote from the window stop 36.
In use, the side plate 38 is fixed relative to the stud 32 by any suitable fixing means, 4 20 for example by screws or nails.
4 The arrangement is similar to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4, in that the side plate 38 and the base plate 34 define a receiving portion shaped so as to receive a sheet of plasterboard, and the side plate 38 locates, in use, between the sheet of plasterboard 31 and the window stud 32. Likewise with this embodiment as with the 6 embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4, it is only necessary to apply a minimal amount of plaster to conceal the join shown at 42 in Figure 6 between the sheet of plasterboard and the side projection In use, to construct a window or door frame, a user fixes the side plates 22, 36 of the appropriate elongate members 12, 30 to the window or door studs 14, 32 by any suitable fixing means, installs the sheets of plasterboard 16, 31 over the studs and side plates such that the sheets of plasterboard cover the side plates, and applies a minimal amount of plaster to the joins 29, 42 between the end projections 24, 40 and the sheets of plasterboard so as to cover the joins.
It will be appreciated that the elongate members may be formed of any suitably strong material, for example steel or aluminium, and the elongate members may be formed by roll forming or by extrusion.
Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.
