Description
BOOKCASE
Technical Field This invention relates to a bookcase which enables twice as many books to be stored as a conventional bookcase of similar dimensions.
BackgroundArt Conventional bookcases having a plurality of shelves usually arranged one above the other have a book storage capacity of one row of books per shelf If two rows of books are placed on a shelf in order to increase the storage capacity of the bookcase, the titles of the rear row of books are obscured by the front row of books.
In addition, it is difficult to insert books into or remove books from the rear row.
Disclosure of Invention By providing a fixed shelf at the rear of the bookcase and a movable shelf at the front of the bookcase which may be moved from a retracted position within the bookcase to an extended position outside the bookcase, access to the rear row of books is permitted to enable the inspection of their titles and their insertion and removal.

Figure 1 is an isometric view of a bookcase fitted with three shelves of the kind 20 covered by this invention.
Figure 2 is a front view of the bookcase and shelves.
Figure 3 is a side cross-section of the bookcase and shelves.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention Figures 1, 2 and 3 show a bookcase having 3 pairs of shelves each pair comprising a 25 fixed shelf 1 mounted at the rear of the bookcase to support a row of books and a movable shelf 2 mounted on commercially available state-of-the-art runners 3 such as fitted to kitchen drawers. The runners 3 are attached to the shelf 2 and the sides 4 S• of the bookcase by means, usually screws, provided by the runner manufacturer.
SThe fixed shelves I are attached to the sides 4 of the bookcase by means such as 30 screws or nails.
The runners 3 and the movable shelf 2 are mounted immediately below the fixed shelf 1.
The movable shelf2 may be moved from a retracted position 5 within the bookcase to an extended position 6 outside the bookcase thus permitting access to the rear row of books to enable the inspection of their titles and their insertion and removal.
Industrial Applicability The shelf design described in this invention is equally applicable to the shelves of kitchen cupboards, pantries, storage cupboards and the like.

Claims (3)
1. A bookcase comprising a fixed shelf mounted at the rear of the bookcase to support a row of books and a movable shelf mounted on runners located immediately below the fixed shelf to support a second row of books at the front of the bookcase.
2. A bookcase as in Claim 1 having a movable shelf as defined in Claim 1 supporting a front row of books which may be moved from a retracted position within the bookcase to an extended position outside the bookcase to permit access to the rear row of books thus enabling the inspection of their titles and their insertion and removal.
3. A bookcase as in Claim 1 which enables twice as many books to be stored as a conventional bookcase of similar dimensions. *oooo o o
