BACKGROUND ART German patent DE19855809 describes a drinking beaker used when swallowing tablets having an inner tube for holding a tablet or capsule which is open at the top and which has holes or slots which allow liquid to pass through it.
Some people have difficulty swallowing medication in tablet form, particularly the young and infirm. The above-mentioned German patent is directed at assisting the process by dousing a tablet in a liquid to assist swallowing.
The nature of swallowed tablets is such that they quickly degrade when in contact with a liquid medium and as a result and are likely to stick to the dispensing tube.
The present invention has similar objectives to the abovementioned German patent and has a particular objective to provide a vessel which will more efficiently dispense medication in tablet form.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the present invention there is provided a drinking vessel used to assist in swallowing tablets, the vessel comprising: a cup-shaped body having a base, sidewalls and an open top; and an inner tube positioned within the confines of the vessel which is supported from interiors of the body characterised in that the longitudinal axis of the inner tube is inclined towards and terminates adjacent a side lip of the vessel.
The cup-shaped body of the vessel and the inner tube can be separately fabricated and the inner tube is supported from the base of the cup-shaped body by an upstand.
The drinking vessel can include a lid having a drinking spout positioned adjacent one side thereof.
The tube can be supported from an internal wall of the cup-shaped body.
The inner tube can be provided with a lower sleeve which has an internal socket for mounting the tube on the upstand.
The inner tube extends at an angle of approximately 45 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the socket.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figqures 1, 2 and 3 are side sectional and plan views of a drinking vessel according to one aspect of the present invention, and Figqures 4, 5 and 6 are side views of an inner tube for the vessel of the present invention, and Figqure 7 is a cross-sectional drawing of the tube of figures 4 to 6, and Figqures 8 to 10 are side plan and sectional drawings of a lid for the vessel of the present invention, and Figqure 11 is a diagrammatic sectional side view drawings of a drinking vessel according to a further possible embodiment of the present invention.
With respect to figures 1 to 10 of the drawings a drinking vessel according to this aspect of the present invention can comprise a cup-shaped body generally indicated by arrow 1 having a base 2, sidewalls 3 and an open top 4.
An inner tube generally indicated by arrow 5 is supported from the interior of the body in such a manner that its longitudinal axis Y:Y is inclined towards and terminates adjacent to a side lip 6 of the body 1.
The cup-shaped body 1 and the inner tube 5 can be separately moulded in a plastics material and the inner tube 5 supported by an upstand 7 extending from the base 2 of the vessel.
The vessel can also include a lid generally indicated by arrow 8 in figures 8 to The lid 8 is provided with a drinking spout 9 adjacent a side edge thereof and a cup engaging base adapted to fit snugly and to provide a waterproof joint with the top edge 4 of the vessel.
A breather hole to assist evacuation of the liquid.
The inner tube 5 is provided with a socket 11 for engagement with the free end of the upstand 7 and the top edge 12 of the tube is bevelled as indicated.
The vessel 1 can be formed with generally tapered sides and an upper portion 13 which is at the larger volume than a lower portion 14.
A further embodiment of the invention illustrated by figure 11 of the drawings a complimentary lid and spout 8, 9 are provided for a vessel 1 in which a tube is supported from the side walls 3 by a cantilevered support In both instances the drinking vessels are used in a similar fashion. The tubes 5 are loaded with tablets and the interior of the vessel filled with an elected liquid accompaniment to a level which is below the open ends of the tubes. Tablets can then be taken with the liquid with the tablets being introduced into the liquid mainstream as the vessel is tilted.
The vessels can be used with or without the lids. Obviously when the lids are used the respective spouts are aligned with the openings of the inner tubes.
By comparison with the prior art device previously described, the present invention has the advantages of: Dispensed tablets are kept dry until they are administered, When tablets are administered, the mouth is first lubricated with a small amount of liquid, the tablets dispensed and remaining washes the mouth.
A lidded vessel and spout assists those eg. children and the inform who have limited oral capacity.
Aspects of the present invention had been described by way of example only and modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

Claims (6)

1. A drinking vessel used to assist in swallowing tablets, the vessel comprising: a cup-shaped body having a base, sidewalls and an open top with a rim; and an inner tube having a closed base positioned within the confines of the vessel which is supported from interiors of the body, characterised in that the longitudinal axis of the inner tube is inclined towards a side lip of the vessel, and terminates in a plane parallel to the drinking vessel rim plane, the inner tube having an outermost radial portion at the terminus plane, wherein the cup-shaped body of the vessel and the inner tube are separately fabricated and the inner tube is supported from the cup-shaped body by a portion which is spaced from the terminus plane of the outermost radial portion of the inner tube.
2. A drinking vessel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inner tube is supported from the base of the cup-shaped body by an upstand.
3. A drinking vessel as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 including a lid having a drinking spout positioned adjacent to one side thereof.
4. A drinking vessel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the tube is supported from an internal wall of the cup-shaped body. 0: .05. A drinking vessel as claimed in claim 2 wherein the inner tube is provided with a lower sleeve which has an internal socket for mounting the tube on the upstand.
6. A drinking vessel as claimed in claim 5 wherein the tube extends at an angle of approximately 40 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the socket.
