Description

WO 99/11276 PCT/NZ98/00130 -1- MEDICAMENT INCLUDING POTASSIUM IODIDE AND AMMONIUM CHLORIDE TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a medicament for treating horses for muscle soreness and muscle tying up problems.
BACKGROUND ART In my New Zealand Patent Application No. 231322/233973, the full contents of which are hereby here included by way of reference, there is disclosed and claimed a medicament comprising an effective amount of a mixture of potassium iodide, ammonium chloride and caffeine for treatifig viral infections and release of bacteria from infections commonly associated therewith. In particular there is disclosure of the use of such a composition for treating equine viral infections and bacterial infections commonly associated therewith.
A preferred medicament disclosed and claimed in the aforementioned specification comprised potassium iodide 200 mg/i to 800 mgil ammonium chloride 200 mg/1 to about 800 mgil, and caffeine 200 mg/l to about 800 mg/l.
A particularly preferred medicament of the aforementioned New Zealand Patent Application No. 231322/233973 additionally included aqueous chloroform 10 ml/1 to about 40 mlil.
There is also disclosure of administration of such a composition in an amount between about 30 ml and 120 ml on a daily basis.
The medicament of my NZ Patent Specification 231322/233973 was applied both to unhealthy and well as healthy horses.
Encouraged by the success of a medicament as disclosed in New Zealand Patent Application No. 231322/233973 in respect of the treatment of horses as well as other animals such as cats, dogs, calves and humans, I have now turned to formulating a non swabable form of the medicament suitable for use with racehorses specifically for muscle soreness and muscle tying up symptoms.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION Accordingly in a first aspect the present invention may broadly be said to consist in a non swabable medicament suitable for (but not restricted to) racehorses for avoiding or treating muscle soreness and/or muscle tying up symptoms comprising or including Potassium Iodide 2.0g/100ml and Ammonium Chloride 2.0g/100ml together in a suitable liquid carrier.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET (RULE 26) WO 99/11276 PCT/NZ98/00130 -2- By non swabable is meant a form of medicament not including any ingredient prohibited and tested for in the horse racing industry.
In a preferred form of the present invention the medicament comprises or includes Potassium Iodide 2.0g/100ml Ammonium Chloride 2.0g/100ml Methyl Paraben 100mg/100ml and Isopropyl Paraben 50mg/100ml.
In a preferred form of the present invention the medicament comprises Potassium Iodide 2.0g/100ml Ammonium Chloride 2.0g/100ml Methyl Paraben 100mg/100ml Isopropyl Paraben 50mg/100ml Glycuol BP 12.5g/100ml Syrupus BP 40g/100ml Alcohol WS 95 5.7g/100ml Red Dye (Hansell's Cochineal) 1% soln 0.5g/100ml In a further aspect the present invention consists in the use of such a non swabable medicament suitable for the treatment of horses for muscle soreness and/or muscle tying up symptoms.
In yet a further aspect the present invention consists in the use of potassium iodide and ammonium chloride in the preparation of a medicament comprising Potassium Iodide 20g/l, Ammonium chloride 20g/l and a liquid carrier for treating a horse for muscle soreness and muscle tying up symptoms, by periodically administering or having administered to such a mammalian patient an effective amount of a medicament comprising potassium iodide 20g/l and ammonium chloride 20g/l in a suitable liquid carrier.
Preferably said medicament also includes methyl paraben and isopropyl paraben together with optionally compatible carriers and orally acceptable inclusions.
S 30 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The medicament of the present invention has been found to control and knock out floating infection within the body of a horse such as those released by primary infections which have just entered the body. The symptoms of such a floating infection may include muscle soreness. It was found in one trial that the treatment of a horse with medicament of the present invention resulted over a period of 10 days, in the WO 99/11276 PCT/NZ98/00130 -3dropping of the white cell reading from a high 14 to within a normal range, to 7.4. A normal count would be in the range of 7-9.
It is also found in trials that in one instance a very high CK (creatine kinase) reading of the liver of 15,000 was reduced to within the normal range of 200-400 with the use of the medicament of the present invention within 13 days. In this trial the use of the medicament of my New Zealand Patent Specification Nos.328660/328771 prior to the use of the medicament of the present invention resulted in release of the infection. Once the release of bacteria from the floating infection occurs, the medicament of the present invention rapidly knocks such released bacteria out.
In one particular trial a horse (a mare) was half way through a course using the medicament of my specification NZ231322/233973. Nine days before racing the white blood cell or infection reading of the horse was 14. This was a higher than normal reading. This indicated that the medicament of NZ231322/233973 was releasing the virus which was causing the infection. The treatment involved giving the horse of the medicament for the first three days (twice daily) and 60mls once daily thereafter.
The AST reading was above normal (216) indicating tying up. The horse was then again tested 12 days later and the AST reading had dropped to 183.
The table below shows the results of blood readings made before treatment and 12 days after the start of treatment.

The medicament of the present invention was also trialed on racing greyhounds and was found to have the same success on muscle soreness. The symptoms of the trial on the dogs were similar and the results were consistent with those obtained from the treatment of horses. As dogs were much lighter, the trials on the dogs required approximately 1/10th the dose rate used on the horses. This medicament has also been found to reduce infection counts in humans when it is used to control floating infection released by my medicament of NZ 231322/233973.
