Description

la An applicator for dispensing measured doses of a liquid The invention relates to applicators for dispensing measured doses of a liquid and particularly, but not exclusively, to applicators for dispensing such measured doses from a bulk supply of liquid. The invention is particularly applicable to applicators for veterinary purposes where the applicators are used for dosing animals with liquid medicaments.
However, it will be appreciated from the following description that the invention is not limited to such applications and may be used for many other purposes where it is necessary to dispense repeated measured doses of a liquid.
The invention relates to an applicator of the kind comprising a cylinder and an elongate plunger including a piston which is slidable in liquid-tight manner within the cylinder to discharge liquid from the cylinder through an outlet at one end thereof It is

desirable in such applicators to be able to preset the volume of liquid which is discharged from the cylinder in each operation. This may be achieved by pre-setting the permitted 15 extent of movement of the piston within the cylinder. For example, there may be provided S..o •an adjustable stop arrangement which may be pre-set to vary the limit of movement of the piston either in the discharge direction or in the retraction direction. It is preferred to limit So the movement of the piston only in the retraction direction since this ensures that the cylinder is always completely discharged during each operation, regardless of the volume of liquid being discharged.
The present invention sets out to provide a novel construction for adjusting the retraction movement of the piston in such an applicator 'which construction may provide significant advantages over known arrangements"- According to the invention there is provided an applicator for dispensing measured doses of a liquid, comprising a cylinder, an elongate plunger including a piston slidable in liquid-tight manner within the cylinder to discharge liquid from the cylinder through an outlet at one end thereof, spring means biasing the plunger away from said outlet, a plurality of abutments located at different axial positions on the plunger, and a stop device for engagement by a selected one of said abutments, the stop device and plunger being capable of relative displacement to a plurality of alternative relative positions in each of which positions the stop device is engageable by a different abutment on the plunger, whereby the distance to which the plunger is biased away from said outlet by the spring means is determined by the relative position between the stop device and the plunger, and the abutments on the plunger are circumferentially spaced on the plunger and the stop device and plunger are capable of relative rotational movement to render the stop device engageable by a particular abutment, .and wherein each abutment comprises an end surface of a longitudinal slot or groove formed a. in the surface of the plunger, the stop device including a part engageable within the said slot or groove.
Preferably the plunger is non-rotatable relative to the cylinder and the stop device is rotatable relative to the cylinder and plunger.
Preferably the plunger may be formed with a circumferential slot or groove which intersects said longitudinal slots or grooves, whereby relative rotation between the stop device 0* S 20 and plunger may be effected when said part of the stop device is located in said circumferential slot or groove. Preferably said circumferential slot or groove is located at the ends of said longitudinal slots or grooves which are remote from said outlet.
The stop device and a part fixed in relation to the cylinder may be formed with a cooperating pointer and scale whereby the position of the stop device indicates on the scale the volume of liquid to be dispensed from the cylinder when the stop device is engaged by the abutment corresponding to that position of the stop device.
The stop device may comprise a generally annular member encircling the plunger, said part for engagement by the abutments on the plunger projecting inwardly form the inner periphery of the annular member.
The applicator may further include inlet means, for connection to a bulk supply of liquid to be dispensed, leading into said other end of the cylinder, said inlet means being controlled by a non-return valve, a further non-return valve being provided in said outlet from said one end of the cylinder. The inlet means may comprise an inlet passage passing longitudinally through said plunger.
The applicator may include a handle comprising a first part fixed to said cylinder and a 10 second, operating part movable relative to the first part and coupled to said plunger. Said first and second parts of the handle may be pivotally connected together.
The aforesaid spring means may be disposed between a part axially fixed in relation to the cylinder and a part movable with the plunger. For example, the spring means may engage the stop device, pressing the stop device against a part which is fixed in relation to the cylinder, whereby the spring means serves to retain the stop device in an axially fixed position *.relative to the cylinder.
The spring means may comprise a helical compression spring encircling the plunger.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic section through an applicator in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the applicator comprises a cylinder 10, of circular crosssection, in which is reciprocable a plunger 11 formed at one end with a piston part 12 which is in fluid-tight sliding engagement with the -interior surface of the cylinder The cylinder 10, which is preferably formed of transparent plastics material, is formed at one end with an externally threaded hollow boss 13 within which is tightly received a discharge tube 14, an internally threaded retaining element 15 being screwed onto the boss 13 to retain the tube 14 in position in the boss 13. A non-return valve 16 is located in the boss 13 to prevent fluid passing into the cylinder 10 through the pipe 14.
The opposite end of the cylinder 10 is screwed into an annular end cap 17 on which is integrally formed a fixed handle part 18. The plunger 11, which may also be formed from 0 00 •plastics material, extends through the end cap 17 coaxially with the cylinder 10 and is engaged 0oo 0 by the upper part of a movable handle part 19, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to S• the fixed handle part 18, as indicated at 20. A central passage 21 extends longitudinally within the plunger 11, and located in the end of the plunger adjacent the piston part 12 is a non-return *t 0 15 valve 22 arranged to prevent the escape of liquid from the cylinder 10 along the passage 21.
The free end of the hollow plunger 11 is connected by a flexible tube 23 to a bulk supply of the •002 fluid to be dispensed (not shown).
o A helical compression spring 24 encircles the plunger 11 between the two handle parts 18 and 19, and serves to bias the handle parts away from one another, and hence bias the piston part 12 towards the retraction position where it lies at the right hand end of the cylinder The general operation of the applicator is as follows. With the part of the cylinder between the piston part 12 and the valve 16 filled with liquid, the operator squeezes the movable handle part 19 towards the fixed handle part 18, against the action of the compression spring 24, causing the piston part 12 to move to the left as seen in the drawing. While this is occurring, the non-return valve 16 opens under the liquid pressure, and the liquid is discharged through the discharge tube 14. The non-return valve 22 prevents liquid being discharged from the cylinder along the passage 21 in the plunger 11.
Once all the liquid in the cylinder has been discharged, the operator releases the pressure on the handle part 19 and the spring 24 returns the piston part 12 and plunger 11 to the limit of its movement in the retraction direction. During this movement the non-return valve 16 closes so that no previously discharged liquid can be drawn back into the cylinder. At the same time, the pressure of supply liquid in the pipe 23 and passage 21 opens the non-return valve 22 so that a fresh charge of liquid is delivered along the passage 21 into the cylinder 00 ready for the next operator of the applicator.

It will be appreciated that the actual volume of liquid drawn into the cylinder 10 will S o depend on the distance through which the plunger 11 is retracted under the action of the compression spring 24. The present invention relates particularly to the novel means whereby

0 For this purpose, the plunger 11 is formed along its length with a series of shallow longitudinal grooves 25 extending from a circumferential groove 26. As will be seen from the 00 drawing, the grooves 25 are of different lengths and there may, for example, be provided 14 grooves around the periphery of the plunger 11, varying in length from about 55mm to 3mm.
The end wall 27 of each groove 25 forms an abutment for limiting the retraction movement of the plunger 11.
Encircling a hollow boss 28 on the cap member 17 is an annular adjustable stop member 29 which is formed on its inner periphery with a projecting pin 30 which engages 6 within one of the grooves 25. The pin 30 may, as shown, comprise the inner end of a screw threaded element 31 which passes radially through the member 29.
As the plunger 11 is retracted under the action of the spring 24 the groove 25 in which the pin 30 is engaged an slide past the pin 30 until the end wall 27 of the groove engages the pin, whereupon retracting movement of the plunger 11 is halted. The extent of movement of the plunger 11, and hence the volume of liquid drawn into the cylinder 10, therefore depends on the length of the groove 25 with which the pin 30 is in engagement. Accordingly, the discharge volume may be adjusted by engaging the pin 30 with a different selected groove in the plunger 11.
In order to effect such adjustment the movable handle part 19 is squeezed towards the fixed part 18 until the piston part 12 engages the outlet end of the cylinder 10. In this position o the pin 30 comes into engagement with the circumferential groove 26 in the plunger 11. It is •go.
:j then possible to rotate the stop member 29 about the axis of the plunger until it is lined up with go S: the open end ofa desired one of the grooves 25. A cooperating pointer and scale (not shown) is provided on the stop member 29 and end cap 17 to indicate the effective volumes of the cylinder 10 which are associated with the various rotational positions of the stop member 29.
:i The stop member 29 is thus simply rotated until the scale indicates the desire volume of the dose to be discharged. Once the stop member 29 has been rotated to the desired position the movable handle part 19 is released and the plunger is retracted by the spring 24 to an extent determined by the length of the groove 25 which has been selected. Thus, if the pip 30 has been aligned with a very short groove the plunger will only retract for a correspondingly short distance before the pin 30 strikes the end wall 27 of the groove, and only a small amount of liquid will be drawing into the cylinder for subsequent discharge. The barrel of the transparent cylinder 10 may also be marked along it length with a scale indicating the volume enclosed between the piston part 12 and the end of the cylinder.
The annular stop member 29 is retained in position against the end cap 17 solely by the pressure of the compression spring 24 and does not require any other retaining means.
Accordingly, the described construction may be simple and cheap to manufacture, comprising only comparatively few components. Also the parts of the applicator, and particularly the parts comprising the adjustable stop mechanisms, are easily accessible for cleaning, repair or replacement.
All of the components of the applicator, apart from the compression spring, may conveniently be formed from suitable plastics materials, but it will be appreciated that any other suitable materials might also be employed.

Claims (14)

1. An applicator for dispensing measured doses of a liquid, comprising a cylinder, an elongate plunger including a piston slidable in liquid-tight manner within the cylinder to discharge liquid from the cylinder through an outlet at one end thereof, spring means biasing the plunger away from said outlet, a plurality of abutments located at different axial positions on the plunger, and a stop device for engagement by a selected one of said abutments, the stop device and plunger being capable of relative displacement to a plurality of alternative relative positions in each of which positions the stop device is engageable by a different abutment on the plunger, whereby the S' distance to which the plunger is biased away from said outlet by the spring means is determined by the relative position between the stop device and the plunger, and the abutments on the plunger are circumferentially spaced on the plunger and the stop S.device and plunger are capable of relative rotational movement to render the stop device engageable by a particular abutment, and wherein each abutment comprises an end surface of a longitudinal slot or groove formed in the surface of the plunger, the stop device including a part engageable within the said slot or groove.
2. An applicator according to Claim 1, wherein the plunger is non-rotatable relative to 20 the cylinder and the stop device is rotatable relative to the cylinder and plunger.

An applicator according to Claim 1, wherein the plunger is formed with a circumferential slot or groove which intersects said longitudinal slots or grooves, whereby relative rotation between the stop device and plunger may be effected when said part of the stop device is located in said circumferential slot or groove.
4. An applicator according to Claim 3, wherein said circumferential slot or groove is located at the ends of said longitudinal slots or grooves which are remote from said outlet.
An applicator according to any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the stop device and a part fixed in relation to the cylinder are formed with a co-operating pointer and scale whereby the position of the stop device indicates on the scale the volume of liquid to be dispensed from the cylinder when the stop device is engaged by the abutment corresponding to that position of the stop device.
6. An applicator according to any of Claims 1 to 5, wherein the stop device comprises a generally annular member encircling the plunger, said part for engagement by the abutments on the plunger projecting inwardly from the inner periphery of the annular member.

An applicator according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the applicator further 0g• includes inlet means, for connection to a bulk supply of liquid to be dispensed, leading 0: .into said other end of the cylinder, said inlet means being controlled by a non-return valve, a further non-return valve being provided in said outlet from said one end of the cylinder. egg
8. An applicator according to Claim 7, wherein the inlet means comprise an inlet passage passing longitudinally through said plunger.
9. An applicator according to any of the preceding claims and including a handle comprising a first part fixed to said cylinder and a second, operating part movable relative to the first part and coupled to said plunger.
10. An applicator according to Claim 9, wherein said first and second parts of the handle are pivotally connected together.
11. An applicator according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the aforesaid spring means are disposed between a part axially fixed in relation to the cylinder and a part movable with the plunger. V*.
12. An applicator according to Claim 13, wherein the spring means engage the stop device, pressing the stop device against a part which is fixed in relation to the cylinder, whereby the spring means serves to retain the stop device in an axially fixed position relative to the cylinder.
13. An applicator according to Claim 13 or Claim 14, wherein the spring means comprise a helical compression spring encircling the plunger.
