AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT
ORIGINAL
Name of Applicant: Address for Service: DAVID KAHOLI COLLISON CO. 117 Adelaide, S.A. 5000 King William Street, Invention Title: TREE GUARD ASSEMBLY The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: This invention relates to tree guards.
While reference is made the word 'tree" this is to be understood as meaning a tree in the broader concept so it can include all manner of plants. The word "tree" is intended to be indicative and not limiting.
It is currently well established that there is value in providing protection during the growing phase of young plants.
This may involve some form of plastic surround and this invention has to do with the costs associated with the current systems being used.
As there are many thousands of these being used, the costs for providing this system becomes very sensitive indeed and if one system can be achieved for even a few cents less than the other, then the first will be seriously advantaged.
An object then is to provide an arrangement where the costs associated with providing an appropriate tree guard assembly can be kept to a minimum, or at the least, the public can be provided with a useful altemrnative.
In one form of this invention, there is proposed a tree guard assembly including a sheet of resilient material rolled into a substantially cylindrical shape with overlapping edges, means to hold said sheet in said rolled shape, a stake in the ground, a retention member extending from the ground to an upper part of the stake to which it is attached, the rolled sheet being held relative to the stake by interengaging the retention member.
In preference, the means to hold the sheet in a rolled shape, at the least, include a collar.
In preference, the retention member is a wire extending from a ground imbeded location to an upper position where it is attached to the stake.
For a better understanding of this invention it will now be described with the assistance of drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an assembly according to the preferred S/ embodiment; -o
C-
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view through that assembly as shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a planned view of the assembly as shown in Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is a wooden stake 1 of consistent crosssectional area throughout its length and having a sharpened end at 2 which is imbeded appropriately in the earth shown at 3.
A translucent sheet of plastics material shown at 4 which is chosen to be of a resilient character so that it will be generally self-supporting and when rolled into the shape as shown in Figure 1, will have a tendency to unwind but otherwise hold the shape shown.
By simply taking a sheet of plastics in this way and rolling it, there is no additional costs so far as cutting shapes to effect an interlocking of the ends or any other difficult or perhaps more importantly, costly steps.
This sheet 4 is then rolled into the shape as shown at 5 with overlapping edges at 6 and as a matter of assembly, a tubular portion of pliable plastics material at 7 is simply slipped around the cylindrical shape 5 and therefore keeps it from unwinding.
An additional feature can include a staple as shown at 8 to ensure that the ends are kept together but this is an optional feature.
The tubular member 7 is chosen to have a diameter when expanded to be appropriate for the size of the cylindrical shape.
There is a retention member 9 and end of which 10 is imbeded within the earth 3, and this retention member is simply a length of wire which also is not otherwise bent or treated and this is secured at 11 to the stake 1 by a staple 12.
For the assembly as shown, the retention member 9 is located so as to pass inside the tubular shape 5 so that when the retention member 9 is secured to the stake 1, this then traps the tubular shape 5 by reason of holding relatively tightly between the retention member and the stake.
4 The cylindrical member 5 however can be manually pushed downwardly or upwardly limited of course by engagement against the staple 12 but this allows for adjustment during a growing period of a plant.
The result of being able to very simply roll and hold a resilient plastic sheet in position as shown ensures that this is the cheapest possible arrangement and by having a simple wire retention member likewise assists in this endeavour.

Claims (3)

1. A tree or plant guard assembly including a sheet of resilient material rolled into a substantially cylindrical shape with overlapping edges, means to hold said sheet in said rolled shape, a stake in the ground, a retention member extending from the ground to an upper part of the stake to which it is attached, the rolled sheet being held relative to the stake by interengaging with the retention member.
2. A plant guard assembly as in claim 1 further characterised in that the means to hold the sheet in a rolled shape at the least include a collar.
3. A plant guard assembly as in either one of claims 1 or 2 further characterised in that the retention member is a wire extending from a ground imbeded location to an upper position where it is attached to the stake by a staple and the means to hold the said sheet in a rolled shape include a staple through mutually engaging overlapping parts of the sheet.
