i APPLICANT: AUSTEC (WAGGA) PTY LTD NUMBER: P06947 FILING DATE: 22/ 5/97 Invention Title: AN ELECTRICAL ADAPTER PLUG The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: "AN ELECTRICAL ADAPTER PLUG" TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to an electrical adapter plug.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION This invention in one aspect resides in an electrical adapter plug including:a plurality of substantially parallel pins arranged a pattern; a plurality of substantially parallel sockets arranged in a corresponding pattern, individual sockets 0*0- being electrically connected to corresponding individual pins; .000 wherein the pattern of sockets is angularly offset with respect to the pattern of pins about an axis substantially parallel to the pins and wherein the pattern of sockets is substantially axially aligned with the pattern of pins.
In a preferred embodiment, the angular offset is 180 degrees.
In another aspect the invention resides in a method of retrofitting a power point having a pattern of sockets to effectively rotate the pattern of sockets of the power point, the method including:plugging the pins of an adapter plug into the sockets of the power point, the adapter plug including a pattern of sockets which is angularly offset with respect to the pattern of pins of the adapter plug about an axis substantially parallel to the pins and wherein the pattern of sockets of the adapter plug is substantially axially aligned with the pattern of pins of the adapter plug.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS In order that this invention may be more easily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein:- FIG 1 is a perspective view of an electrical adapter plug according to the invention; FIG 2 is a reverse perspective view of the electrical adapter plug of FIG 1; FIG 3 is the electrical adapter plug of FIG 2 shown in an exploded view in combination with a wall outlet and AC/DC adapter.
*BEST MODE 15 With reference to FIGS 1 and 2, electrical adapter plug 10 includes a plurality of substantially parallel pins 12 arranged in a pattern on a first planar surface 14 and a plurality of substantially parallel sockets 16 arranged in a corresponding pattern and formed in a second substantially planar surface 18.
Individual sockets are electrically connected to corresponding individual pins by internal wiring.
It will be noted by comparing FIGS 1 and 2 that the *:*pattern of sockets is angularly offset with respect to the pattern of pins about an axis substantially parallel to the pins. Particularly, in the illustrated embodiment the pattern of sockets is angularly offset by 180 degrees with respect to the pattern of pins.
With reference to FIG 3 there is illustrated an AC/DC adapter 20 in combination with an electrical adapter plug 10 and a wall outlet 22.
As can be observed, the AC/DC adapter 20 has been inverted from its normal orientation so that it can be plugged into the electrical adapter plug In the absence of the adapter plug 10 the body of the AC/DC adapter would extend downwardly relative to the wall outlet 22. This is often impossible as the wall outlet is normally mounted at floor level, often in the 4 skirting board. In such cases the AC/DC adapter simply cannot be used with the wall outlet.
Thus, the electrical adapter plug 10 allows the inversion of the AC/DC adapter which, in turn, allows the AC/DC adapter to be used with a low-mounted wall outlet.
The electrical adapter plug also spaces the AC/DC adapter (or any other appliance) from the wall and wall outlet which facilitates access to the switch and also facilitates access to the second outlet in a double outlet as shown on FIG 3.
It will of course be realised that whilst the above **has been given by way of an illustrative example of this invention, all such and other modifications and variations hereto, as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art, are deemed to fall within the broad :oo:scope and ambit of this invention as is herein set forth.
