Patent Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT
ORIGINAL
Names of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: Invention Title: The following statement BERNIE OMODEI BERNIE OMODEI BERNIE OMODEI, 5/50 Harvey St East, WOODVILLE PARK SA 5011 LONGITUDINAL PAPER STAPLER is a full description of this invention: Page 2 of The invention relates to a paper stapler.
Paper staplers have two hinged arms and the application of the stapler is limited by the length of the arms. In particular, a stapler with long arms is needed to fix staples along the spine of a small booklet.
It is an object of the invention to provide a paper stapler with conventional length arms whereby staples can be fixed with desired orientations in desired locations otherwise inaccessible using a conventional paper stapler of the same size. In particular, the invention can fix staples along the spine of a small booklet such as an A5 booklet using arms that are of conventional length.
There is provided according to the invention a fixed base arm hinged to an upper arm having a staple feeder incorporated in or attached to the upper arm and at right angles to the upper arm thereby having the bridge of each staple perpendicular to the axis of the hinge and having the two legs of the staple directed downwards.
There is further provided according to the invention a base plate incorporated in the end of the fixed base arm whereby the recess or groove in the base plate for folding the legs of the staple is perpendicular to the axis of the hinge.
There is further provided according to the invention an option of a mechanism for tilting the front edge of the base plate upwards whereby the deviation of the base plate from the horizontal position can be adjusted to suit the thickness of the sheets of paper to be stapled and the length of the legs of the staple.
One form of the aforementioned mechanism could incorporate a screw mechanism for adjusting the tilt of the base plate.
Page 3 of There is further provided according to the invention a mechanism for applying sufficient force to the bridge of one staple at a time thereby forcing the legs of the staple through the paper and into the recess in the base plate thereby folding the legs of the staple.
One form of the aforementioned mechanism is to modify the mechanism used in the conventional transverse stapler by turning the mechanism through 90 degrees whereby the orientation of the mechanism matches the orientation of the staple.
Hence there is provided according to the invention a longitudinal paper stapler that enables a staple to be fixed with the desired orientation in the desired location in situations that may be inaccessible using a conventional transverse paper stapler of the same size.
Although one particular form of the invention has been described in some detail, the invention is not to be limited thereto but can include variations and modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Claims (3)
1. A paper stapler having a fixed base arm hinged to an upper arm having a staple feeder incorporated in or attached to the upper arm and at right angles to the upper arm thereby having the bridge of each staple perpendicular to the axis of the hinge and having the two legs of the staple directed downwards.
2. A paper stapler as defined in the preceding claim wherein there is a base plate incorporated in the end of the fixed base arm whereby the recess or groove in the base plate for folding the legs of the staple is perpendicular to the axis of the hinge.
3. A paper stapler as defined in the preceding claims optionally including a mechanism for tilting the front edge of the base plate upwards whereby the deviation of the base plate from the horizontal position can be adjusted to suit the thickness of the sheets of paper to be stapled and the length of the legs of the staple.
