Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: PETER JOHN FLAUS PETER JOHN FLAUS CULLEN CO., Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, 240 Queen Street, Brisbane, QId. 4000, Australia.
Invention Title: FIXING AND FINISHING SYSTEM Details of Associated Provisional Applications: The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me: 2 FIXING AND FINISHING SYSTEM TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to fixing and finishing systems and has particular relevance to methods of fixing fittings such as windows and doors in openings in the walls of buildings.
BACKGROUND ART Most windows and doors are prefabricated off-site and delivered for installation by the builder or specialist window and door erectors.
In the majority of cases the window and door fabricator will also fit a window or door frame so that when the fixtures arrive on site the persons responsible for fitting windows align, plumb and fit the windows. Where the windows and doors are fitted wooden frames there are generally few problems and the installations can be completed within a relatively short time.
Where the windows or frames are to be fitted with respect to solid walls, such as brick, concrete, or block walls the fitting of a window or door can be more time consuming particularly if the window or door opening is not plumb and square. In most cases because of the varying depth of openings it is preferable that window and door fixtures be completed on site.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a fixing and finishing system for the installation of window and door frames on site.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example only.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of securing a window or door frame to a wall opening, said method comprising the steps of: assembling a support frame; fixing the support frame to the window or door frame; inserting and fixing the support frame and window or door frame to the opening; and inserting an L-shaped edging into a recess defined by the 3 support frame.
The support frame can be riveted to the window or door frame.
The support frame can be welded to the window or door frame.
The support frame can be screwed to the window.or door frame.
The support frame can be glued to the window or door frame.
The support frame can be riveted to the opening.
The support frame can be welded to the opening.
The support frame can be screwed to the opening.
The support frame can be glued to the opening.
The support frame can be nailed to the opening.
Reinforcing can be incorporated into the corners of the support frame.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a support frame for securing a window or door frame to a wall opening, said support frame comprising: an elongate first limb; an L-shaped second limb having a first portion substantially perpendicular to a second portion; and a bridging limb connecting the first limb to the second limb, wherein the first limb, second limb and the bridging limb form a-recess.
The frame can be constructed of aluminum.
The first portion of the second limb can be substantially parallel to the first limb.
The bridging limb can be substantially perpendicular to the first limb and the first portion of the second limb.
The recess can accommodate a first limb of an L-shaped edging.
The L-shaped edging can be constructed of plastic.
The window frame can contact the second limb.
The first limb can be attached to the wall opening.
The first limb can contain holes for fixing the frame to the opening with fixing means.
The second portion of the second limb can contain holes for fixing the support frame to the window frame with fixing means.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS With respect to. the drawings the present invention provides a support frame generally indicated by arrow 1 for securing a window or door frame 2 to a wall opening 3, the frame comprising an elongate first limb 4, and L-shaped second limb 5 having a first portion 6 substantially perpendicular to a second portion 7 and a bridging limb 8 connecting the first limb 4 to the second limb 5 in a manner which provides a recess 9.
The recess 9 is adapted to accommodate one limb of and Lshaped edging member generally indicated by arrow The edging member 10 which can be formed in a plastic or metal material has an apertured fixing limb 11 and a ledge limb 12.
The support frame 1 can be fixed to all edges of a window or door frame as illustrated and by fixtures 13 and the frame fixed to the inner walls of an opening 3 by fixtures 14 after it has been aligned and plumbed.
The edging member 10 can then be fixed to vertical edges 15 of the wall 16 adjacent the opening by the fixing limb and the edging member or at least the fixing limb 11, thereof, can be rendered and finished.
L-shaped corn6r members (not shown) can be used to reinforce the corners of the formed borders/frames.
The ledge limb 12 can be provided with a textured finish to match a render finish.
Fixture of the ledge limb 12 to the opening may be by a foam adhesive.
The present invention provides an efficient, clean and economical means for fixing windows, doors and like fixtures.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it should be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Claims (2)
1. A -rectilinear support frame for securing a window or door frame to a wall opening each side of said support frame comprising: an elongate first limb; an elongate bridging limb extending at right angles from and connecting the elongate first limb to an elongate second L-shaped limb said second limb having a first portion spaced from and substantially parallel to the first limb and a second portion which is perpendicular to the first portion and parallel to the bridging limb, characterised in that the elongate first limb, the io elongate second limb and the elongate bridging limb combine to form a recess for receiving an edging member.
2. A support frame for securing a window frame to a wall opening, said support frame being as claimed in claim 1 and substantially as herein described with reference to any one of the embodiments as that embodiment is illustrated in the drawings. DATED this 8 th day of August 2000 PETER JOHN FLAUS By his Patent Attorneys CULLEN CO.
