A GUARDRAIL SYSTEM Invention Title: Details of Associated Provisional Applications: No. P07172 filed 4 June 1997 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us.
This invention relates to a guardrail system. In particular, the invention concerns a guardrail system for trestles.
Trestles are currently employed in a variety of workplace environments.
The trestles are typically used in pairs and are arranged so that a spaced pair of trestles has at least one plank extending between them and arranged to rest upon selected rungs of each of the trestles. There is a danger with such a trestle arrangement for workmen who use the plank as a work platform to fall from that platform if due care is not exercised.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a guardrail system for trestles which at least minimises the disadvantage referred to above.
According to one aspect, the present invention provides a guardrail system having a pair of spaced apart mounting posts, a plurality of mounting brackets extending from each of the posts adapted for securing the posts to respective spaced apart trestles and at least one guardrail extending between the posts.
15 Preferably, each mounting post has at least two mounting brackets which extend outwardly from the posts and are adapted to locate over rungs and/or stiles of the trestles. More preferably, each mounting post has three mounting brackets arranged at spaced locations along it. The uppermost bracket and the lowermost bracket being adapted for engaging over rungs of the trestles and the 20 intermediate bracket engages over a stile of the trestle to prevent lateral movement of the post relative to the stile of the trestle to which it is mounted.
S* Preferably, at least two guardrails extend between the two spaced mounting posts. Each guardrail may comprise two elongate members adapted to telescope relative to one another so that the length of each guardrail may be adjusted to suit a variety of different spacings at which the trestles may be positioned. The ends of the guardrails may be pivotally secured to the mounting posts so that when the trestles are positioned on sloping ground, then the guardrails are free to pivot relative to the mounting posts to cater for the sloping ground on which the trestles are mounted. In order to allow for the guardrails to be telescopic in nature, each guardrail consists of two elongate hollow sections with one of these sections having a greater internal diameter and the external diameter of the other section. If desired, the guardrail sections may be locked to each other at a particular desired extension.
It is preferred that at least one end guard extends outwardly from one of the mounting posts. The end guard may form a gate extending outwardly from the post and in use, may be arranged to extend across the plank arranged between the trestles. Preferably, two such gates are present with a respective one of them being associated with each of the mounting posts. The gates may be configured to move between a position extending across the plank supported by the trestles to a position extending in a direction along the plank to provide access to the plank. Preferably, each of the gates is pivotally mounted to the respective mounting post. Each post may be hollow and each gate may have a longitudinal extension which located within the post and acts as an axle about which the gates may pivot relative to the respective posts.
*It is preferred that the guardrail system includes a least one but preferably two releasable locks for securing the mounting posts to respective trestles. In 15 one embodiment, a spring-loaded locking pin is provided on each of the posts and is adapted to engage about either a rung or a stile of a trestle to prevent the guardrail system from being separated from the trestles.
A particular preferred embodiment of the invention will not be described with reference to the drawings in which: 2- 20 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a guardrail system according to an embodiment of the invention shown mounted to two spaced apart trestles; Figure 2 is a detailed perspective view of one of the mounting posts which forms part of the guardrail system of the invention illustrated in Figure 1; and, Figure 3 shows a detailed perspective view of a lower portion of the mounting post shown in Figure 2.
As shown in Figure 1, the guardrail system 10 is mounted to two spaced apart trestles 11, 12. Each trestle consists of two ladder sections hinged to each other at upper ends and each having spaced stiles 13 and rungs 15. Two planks 16, 17 are shown supported on an uppermost rung of each of the trestles 11, 12.
The guardrail system 10 according to an embodiment of the invention includes two mounting posts 20, 21 between which extend guardrails 22, 23.
Each guardrail consists of two guardrail sections 24, 25 which are able to telescope relative to one another so that the spacing between the trestles 11, 12 may be varied. The ends of the guardrails 22, 23 terminate in hooked projections for reasons described below.
Each of the posts 20, 21 is hollow and receives an axle (not shown) of a gate 26, 27. This axle allows the gates to pivot from the position shown in Figure 1 to an alternative position extending along the planks 16, 17 to provide easy access to the planks.
Figure 2 shows greater detail of mounting post 21. Post 20 is constructed in a similar fashion. The post 21 is hollow and receives an axle which extends downwardly from upper rail 28 of the gate 27 and it is about that axle that the gate 27 pivots relative to the post 21. The gate has a U-shaped frame 29 located below the upper rail 28. This frame may be omitted. The post has two outwardly extending supports 30, 31 with an attachment portion 32 and a stop 33. The S- hooked ends of the guardrails 22, 23 locate over attachment portions 32. These 15 hooked ends are configured to allow for pivotal movement of the guardrails to cater for uneven ground upon which the trestles may rest. The post is provided with an uppermost, an intermediate and a lowermost mounting bracket 34, and 36 respectively. In use, bracket 34 locates over one of the rungs of a trestle, bracket 36 locates over a lower rung of the trestle, whilst bracket 35 locates 20 around an outer face of a stile of the trestle to prevent movement of the mounting post.
ooooo Figure 3 shows a detailed view of a portion of mounting post 21. The lowermost mounting bracket 36 is shown and adjacent to it is a lock 40 for releasably locking the post 21 to an adjacent part of the trestle 12. The lock has a pin 41 which is biased into the position shown by a spring (not shown).
The pin 41 may be moved against the action of the spring to allow the rung over which bracket 36 engages to be trapped between the pin 41 and the bracket 36.
The guardrail system of the invention may readily be attached to two spaced trestles and provides a degree of safety for workmen positioned on the planks extending between the trestles. The system may readily be disassembled from the trestles when required.
