Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: STEWART ROBERT ORCHARD STEWART ROBERT ORCHARD CULLEN CO., Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, 240 Queen Street, Brisbane, Qld. 4000, Australia.
Invention Title: A DRY WALL BEAD Details of Associated Provisional Applications: The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me: A DRY WALL BEAD TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to dry wall beads of the type used in the building industry by cement renderers, texture coat finishers and plasterers.
BACKGROUND ART Dry wall beads have been used by the building trade for a number of years. The beads are produced from stamped metal sheet and plastics materials such as nylon and vinyl.
Dry wall beads come in many shapes and configurations and are used to form the basis of finishes at corners and curves of building structures.
The beads are generally nailed, glued or stapled into position and then rendered with cement renders, texture coats or plasters to provide the required protective finish, and numerous architectural features such as trimmings, beads, shadows, bull nose corners and the like.
One of the advantages of plastics beads is that protective tear away strips can be readily incorporated as a feature of the design and surfaces which will be exposed after fitment can be protected from being spoiled by the inadvertent application of rendered materials.
Whilst in the past shadow beads have been used for providing alternative architectural features between straight walls and ceilings no suitable product has been available for providing a shadow bead with respect to curved walls and ceilings.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a dry wall bead for providing a shadow affect for curved surfaces.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the present invention there is provided an elongate dry wall bead comprising an L-shaped trim portion having a first limb, a second limb extending at right angles from a first side of the first limb, a fixture portion which extends from a medial position of a second side of the first limb in a plane which is substantially parallel to the plane of the second limb of the trim portion.
The elongate fixture portion can be provided with a plurality of apertures.
The elongate fixture portion can be serrated.
The first limb of the trim portion can be provide with an elongate tear strip which enables a portion of the limb to be cut or torn away after its application.
An inner most portion of the fixture portion can be stepped.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a dry wall bead in accordance with the present invention, and Figure 2 is a top view of the bead of figure 1, and Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken at 111:111 of figure 2, and Figure 4 is a diagrammatic sectional view showing one possible application situation for the bead of figure 1.
With respect to the drawings the present invention provides an elongate dry wall bead generally indicated by arrow 1 having an L-shaped trim portion generally indicated by arrow 2.
The trim portion 2 has a first limb 3 and a second limb 4 extending from a first side of a top edge of the first limb.
A fixture portion generally indicated by arrow 5 extends from a medial position of a second side of the first limb 3 in a plane which is substantially parallel to the plane of the oppositely extending second limb 4 of the trim portion 2.
The elongate fixture portion 5 can be serrated by the provision of cross-wise slits or vee-shaped slots 6 creating a plurality of individual tabs 7 each being provided with fixing apertures 8.
The first limb 4 of the bead can be provided with an elongate tear strip 9 which enables a portion of the limb to be cut or torn away.
In the example illustrated an inner most portion 10 of the fixture portion provides a channel.
With respect to figure 4 of the drawjngs the bead 1 can be fixed with respect to upper regions of a curved wall 11 with limbs 4 providing a horizontal shadow ledge adjacent the wall lining 12 and the fixing portion forming part of a plastered surface of the adjacent ceiling linings 13.
To accommodate a curve in the wall 11 the bead is able to be curved to follow the curve in the wall. As the bead is bent the slots 6 close.
If the curve is greater than the slots 6 can provide for the slots can be widened to suit.
Once the bead is correctly positioned and fixed to the ceiling lining by nailing through the apertures 8, and the fixture portion 5 has been plastered the tear off strip 9 can then be removed by tearing or cutting along score line 14.
SarShadow beads such as described provide an attractive alternative to timber or plasterboard trims and are adaptable to varying forms of construction techniques and detail.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it will be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
Claims (2)
1. An elongate dry wall bead comprising an L-shaped trim portion having a first limb, a second limb extending at a right angles from a first side of a top edge of the first limb, a channel formed on a second side of the first limb, an apertured and serrated fixture portion extending from the channel in a plane which is substantially parallel to the plane of the second limb of the trim portion, characterised in that the first limb of the trim portion is provided with a tear line adjacent to the channel.
2. An elongate dry wall bead as claimed in claim 1 and lo substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this 29th day of June 2000 STEWART ROBERT ORCHARD By his Patent Attorneys CULLEN CO.
