Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A PETTY PATENT Name of Applicants: Actual Inventors: COLIN ALLAN WATLING RODNEY GEORGE WEISSE COLIN ALLAN WATLING RODNEY GEORGE WEISSE Address for Service: Invention Title: CULLEN CO., Patent Trade Mark Attorneys, 239 George Street, Brisbane, QId. 4000, Australia.
EDGE PROTECTION AND FINISHING
SYSTEMS
Details of Associated Provisional Applications: The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us: EDGE PROTECTION AND FINISHING SYSTEMS TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to edge protection and finishing systems.
BACKGROUND ART The edges of panels used for tables, benchtops and the like are finished in many different ways with mouldings, metal or plastic caps and the like which provide finishing, protection and enhanced aesthetic appeal.
In recent times stainless steel appliances have enjoyed increasing popularity.
Stainless has the advantage of being a durable and hygienic material which blends well with modern tastes in decor and colour and with panel finishes such as formicas TM and other forms of laminates.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a panel edge protection and finishing systems which provides an attractive and durable metal finish for utilities such as tables, bench tops and the like.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the present invention there is provided panel edge protection means comprising an inner profile substrate and an outer edge profile wherein the inner profile substrate has a shaped outer face and a stepped inner face which is adapted to locate with a rebate in a panel and the outer edge profile has a portion complementary to the shaped outer face of the substrate and a first inturned edge adapted to locate with the step of the substrate.
The outer edge profile can be fabricated or extruded from metal.
The substrate can be a timber substrate.
The outer edge profile can be fabricated from stainless steel sheet.
The outer edge profile can have a tangential fixture portion which extends from a second edge of the shaped outer face thereof.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Aspects of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a partial sectional view, of a rebated edge of a bench top, and Figure 2 is a partial sectional drawing of a panel edge protection means in accordance with the present invention fixed to a rebated panel edge, and Figure 3 is a edge view of an inner profile substrate according to the present invention, and Figure 4 is a end view of a outer metal profile in accordance with the present invention.
With respect to the drawings and in accordance with the present invention the edges of a panel generally indicated by arrow 1 can be provided with a continuous rebate to which a inner profile substrate generally indicated by arrow 3 and a metal profile generally indicated by arrow 4 can be fitted in the manner illustrated.
The inner profile substrate 3 has a stepped inner face 5 adapted to locate with the rebate 2 of the panel and a curved outer face 6 which can be provided with fluting 7.
A vertical edge 8 of the substrate 3 is provided with a step 9.
The substrate 3 can be fixed to the rebated edge of the panel with adhesives and/or fasteners The substrate 3 can be formed in timber or other materials.
The outer edge profile 4 has a curved portion 11 complementary with the curved portion of the substrate and when fixed an inturn 12 fits within the step 9 in the face 8 of the substrate.
The edge profile can also include a tangential extension 13 which is used to cover the joint 14 between the substrate and the panel. The extension can also be used to as a means of fixing the profile to the panel with fasteners The edge profile of the present invention can be finished or 4 unfinished to match decor.
The system can be quickly and easily assembled by semi-skilled persons.
The substrate 3 and outer edge profile can be bevel cut to suit situations where this is required.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it will be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
Claims (3)
1. Panel edge protection means comprising an inner profile substrate and an outer edge profile wherein the inner profile substrate has a shaped outer face and a stepped inner face which is adapted to locate with a rebate formed at the underside of an elongate vertical edge of a panel and the outer edge profile has a portion complementary to the shaped outer face of the substrate, a first inturned edge adapted to locate with the stepped inner face of the substrate, and a tangential fixture portion which extends from an edge of the shaped outer face which is opposite to the inturned edge.
2. Panel edge protection means as claimed in claim 1 wherein the outer edge profile is fabricated or extruded from metal.
3. Panel edge protection means as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 and substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this 12th day of May 2000 Colin Allan WATLING Rodney George WEISSE By their Patent Attorneys CULLEN CO.
