Conventionally, awning fabrics have been designed and manufactured to combat excessive heat penetrating through to a building during summer.
With the advent of colder temperatures during the remainder of the year, these awning fabrics have little, if any, capacity to act as insulating agents against the colder temperatures and a building may be subject to prolonged cold temperature related damage, such as may arise from frost.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an insulated awning fabric that has insulative properties against both heat and cold, and that will substantially ameliorate the shortcomings of the prior art.
According to the invention, there is provided an insulated awning fabric comprising a basecloth of a generally planar configuration having opposed 15 sides, and a layer of an insulative material applied to a first one of the opposed 0000.: sides, the said material being insulative against both hot and cold temperature conditions, wherein the insulative material is aluminium applied as a liquid film over the basecloth, and wherein the insulative material is applied to a side of t the basecloth which is adapted to serve as a rear surface of the awning fabric and so not be exposed directly to hot and cold temperature conditions.
Preferably, the fabric includes a layer of water and dust repellent material applied to a second one of the opposed sides, said layer of water and to e 0.
dust repellent material adapted to be exposed to direct sunlight or other weather conditions.
During application of the liquid film of aluminium over the basecloth, the aluminium is preferably dispersed in an acrylic based pigment with a liquid fungicide or mildew inhibitor.
The basecloth may be a polyester cotton blend of, say, 65% cotton and polyester.
In order that the invention may be readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing in 10/05/00 which Fig. 1 is a sectional side view of an insulated awning fabric according to a preferred embodiment of the invention.
The insulated awning fabric 10 of Fig. 1 is manufactured of a series of layers of materials applied on both opposed sides of a basecloth 11 having a generally planar configuration. The basecloth 11 is a 65% cotton and 35% polyester blended fabric.
A first surface of the basecloth 11, which is adapted to serve as the rear surface of the awning fabric and so not be exposed directly to the weather conditions, has an insulative layer 12 formed thereon by coating a liquid aluminium dispersed in an acrylic based pigment with an added liquid fungicide or mildew inhibitor to the first surface.
Applied over this layer 12 is a layer 13 of a green acrylic based •:i coating which also contains a fungicide or mildew inhibitor to protect the •awning 10 from rotting.
The second surface of the basecloth 11, which is adapted to serve S. as the front surface of the awning fabric and so be exposed directly to the weather conditions, has a layer 14 of an acrylic based pigmented coating.
.i This layer 14 provides an aesthetically pleasing pattern in-the desired colours.
20 Overlaid on layer 14 is a clear acrylic based coating that forms a dust and water repellent layer 15. Layer 15 also includes a fungicide or mildew inhibitor.
The insulated awning fabric 10 has the reflective and insulative properties of aluminium and the soft textured look of canvas, as well as other advantages. In particular, its insulative properties against both heat and cold are superior to traditional awning fabrics. The aluminium coated layer 12 is primarily responsible for blocking heat penetration to the windows of a building and for reducing heat loss through the windows in winter. Other benefits of the awning of the invention are that it provides substantially 100% UV protection, protects windows from damage caused by extreme heat, frost and cold air penetration and is environmentally friendly.
Various modifications may be made in details of design and construction without departing from the scope and ambit of the invention.

Claims (8)

1. An insulated awning fabric comprising a basecloth of a generally planar configuration having opposed sides, and a layer of an insulative material applied to a first one of the opposed sides, the said material being insulative against both hot and cold temperature conditions, wherein the insulative material is aluminium applied as a liquid film over the basecloth, and wherein the insulative material is applied to a side of the basecloth which is adapted to serve as a rear surface of the awning fabric and so not be exposed directly to hot and cold temperature conditions.
2. The insulated awning fabric of claim 1 and including a layer of water and dust repellent material applied to a second one of the opposed sides, said layer of water and dust repellent material adapted to be exposed to direct sunlight or other weather conditions. oooo
3. The insulated awning fabric of claim 1 wherein, during application of the film, the aluminium is dispersed in an acrylic based pigment with a liquid fungicide or mildew inhibitor. oooo
4. The insulated awning fabric of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the basecloth is a polyester cotton blend.
The insulated awning fabric of claim 4 wherein the polyester cotton blend is 65% cotton and 35% polyester.
6. The insulated awning fabric of claim 1 wherein there is applied over the insulative material a layer of an acrylic based coating which contains a fungicide or mildew inhibitor. 10/05/00
7. The insulated awning fabric of claim 2 wherein there is applied between the basecloth and the layer of water and dust repellent material a layer of an acrylic based pigmented coating.
