Patent Trade Mark GPO Box 185, Brisbane, 4001 Attorneys, "IMPROVED NOGGING FOR BUILDING
PURPOSES"
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known, to ne: n: ~4 ft Piz ly 1 a; ,:rl i~; i\ L :1 t i ij -n~ 1 I t 9,- -:~f9 9 i 9.
4 THIS INVENTION relates to improved noggings for building purposes, and it has more particular reference to a novel form of nogging which is easily adjustable as to length to cater for varying requirements in use.
In the building industry the word "nogging" is used universally to indicate a piece of timber cut to appropriate length almost invariably on the site for securing in horizontal disposition between and abutting two vertical studs in a wall frame so as to provide additional stability for the vertical or overhead members and also permitting facing sheets to be attached thereto when applicable. Noggings are also utilised for mounting utility service fittings, particularly plumbing fittings such as bathroom and kitchen combinations and associated pipework. As such fittings generally must be mounted within the wall cavity, the commonly used timber noggings must be recessed or notched to accommodate the fittings. Furthermore, timber noggings are sometimes difficult to fit requiring skew nails or screws which are not always fully effective. Unfortunately, if a nogging is not well secured, waterhammer can cause rattling of the pipework and eventual damage.
Additionally, houses and other small buildings now commonly utilise steel wall framing typically constructed mainly of channel members and it is sometimes necessary to customise sections on site and in many cases such sections need to be made to non-standard sizes in which vertical studs are spaced apart by non-standard distances. Due to the difficulty of cutting and fitting framing members constructed of metallic 4 {1 j)i "a .ii, -3materials on site, wooden noggings are still used, with the result that the long-accepted disadvantages associated with cutting timber to selected lengths continue to remain with the industry and with the building personnel therein.
The present invention has been devised with a view to overcoming or at least alleviating the disadvantages currently encountered as aforementioned and it has for its principal object to provide a novel form of nogging which will exhibit desirable improvements over those currently used, especially in relation to simplicity of nature and ease of installation. In particular, the invention has as an object to provide a novel j form of nogging as aforesaid which does not need to be cut to length on the site or at all, being simply adjustable as to length so as to be fitted easily in any position requiring noggings falling within a range of lengths. The invention alsoi has for another object to provide nogging constructions leading to ease of fitting and/or adjusting, while being able to be made without undue cost, using simple basic materials and not involving significant wastage of material as a result of offcuts, sawdust circulation and the like. Yet another object of the invention is to provide a nogging which can be easily and reliably secured to vertical or horizontal frame members whether constructed of timber or metal.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the i invention resides broadly, according to one aspect thereof, in an adjustable length nogging for use in building construction, comprising a pair of telescopically inter-fitting first and second parts of elongate form slidably adjustable to provide a 6i ,h y i *v 1 l 1 V 1 o l i 1 46. 0 111 1 I 1 41 securement means whereby the respective opposed extremities of said first and second parts may be secured to spaced apart wall frame members such as vertical or inclined frame members.
Preferably, each of said first and second parts has a front wall portion and two opposed converging side wall portions extending from said front wall portion, said opposed converging side wall portions of said first part being parallel to and slidably engaged with the respective opposed side wall portions of said second part. However, in one form of the invention where the nogging is constructed of relatively thick metal, such as 2.5 mm wall thickness, the first telescopic part being within the side wall portions of the second part, could be of simple plate-like form without side wall portions. It will be appreciated that the converging side wall portions are effective to hold the first and second parts together in slidable engagement and are relatively inexpensive to manufacture, in one form requiring only one folding or forming operation per side. It is also preferred tha-c the front wall portions of the first and second parts be substantially planar i: and in parallel abutting engagement. In such form it is preferred that the free non-engaged ends of the rirst and second parts terminate in tabs which are folded from the plane *of the front wall portion to constitute securement means adapted to be secured by screws, rivets, nails or the like to Si.* the columns, or vertical mullions or the like between which the nogging is to be fitted, depending on whether they are 4 constructed of metal or timber. There may be one such tab at a

.dO' .NMS1 '-ji each end or a plurality of spaced tabs, preferably all tabs being on the same side of the front wall portion for attachment to the "inner" faces of the studs or other mounting members and permitting the passage of wiring or pipes through the members when so required. Such tabs may be formed in the plane of the front wall portion as extensions of said front wall portion and be adapted for folding on site to allow easy packing of large quantities of the noggings. The tabs may be folded so as to lie on the same side of the front wall portion as the side wall portions which allows the nogging to be installed with the front wall portion flush with the wall spaced apart wall frame members to which it is secured or so as to lie on the opposite side whereby the nogging may be utilisad for mounting utility i service fittings within the wall cavity. Preferably apertures are provided in the tabs to facilitate their attachment to the mounting members. Apertures may also be provided in the front wall portions of the first and second parts for alignment of at l

least two of said apertures at any selected desired length of K the nogging whereby the first and second parts may be held at the selected length.
SIn order that the invention may be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:- Fig. 1 shows in perspective view the two S'I telescopically inter-fitting parts of a first form of t° no gging according to the invention, set at a selectad 1 length; l Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on the lines i 1 1 1 1
I
-6- X-X and Y-Y respectively of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 illustrates in perspective view how the nogging is used in customary manner between a pair of vertical members of a timber frame; Fig. 5 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a second form of nogging according to another embodiment of the invention; Figs. 6 and 7 are an elevational view in the direction of arrow A and a cross-section on line B-B in the drawing shown in Fig. 5, and Figs. 8 and 9 are views similar to those of Figs. 6 and 7 but showing a particularly preferred form of nogging having flanges which are modified from those of Figs. 6, and 7.
Referring initially to Figs. 1 to 4, the adjustable length nogging 10 has a first or inner part 12 retained in sliding engagement with a second or outer part 11 by a pair of opposed longitudinally extending L-shaped flanges having legs 14 and formed as returns extending from a front wall portion lic which engage with the opposed edge portions of the inner part. In S this embodiment both the inner and outer parts are formed of galvanised cheet metal of 2.5 mm thickness as sold under the name "galvabond". Other sheet materials such as that sold under Sthe name "zincalume" could be utilised it desired. In this instance the sheet metal has sufficient strength to allow the 1 inner part 12 to be of plain unflanged form, that is comprising A a front wall portion 12c complementary to the front wall portion 1a hat not having flanges complementing flanges 14 and i 1 -I a 1 IAC I.
with its edge portions being slidably retained in the opposed channels 13 defined by the L-shaped flanges 14 and of the outer part 11.
The free ends of the outer and inner parts have single tabs 16 and 17 respectively provided with apertures 18 therein so that they may be secured to the inrqr faces of side frame members 19 and 20 of a timber frame 21 by nails or screws as shown in Fig. 4. In this case the front wall portion lla has a width of approximately 100mm and a length of approximately 320mm in use, but it will be appreciated that these dimensions may be varied according to the application. If desired, apertures could be provided at selected locations in the front wall portions lla and 12a at which an operator, after setting the parts to appropriate length, could insert self-tapping screws or the like to ensure that the parts are held together and increase rigidity for the frame members.
Figs. 5 to 9 show alternative constructions using 1mm thick sheet metal and differing only in the flange arrangement whereby the inner part is retained in the outer part, each inner part having flanges 22 to provide increased strength and resist bending. In Figs. 5 to 7, the same parts are identified by the same numerals but suffixed with the letter while the same occurs in the embodiment of Figs. 8 and 9 which has different flanges 23 but otherwise the same numerals suffixed with the letter Additionally the tabs are different in that each is of two-part form and separated by a space 24 which can be used for the passage of wires, pipes or other fittings when necessary. It will be seen that the embodiment of Figs. 8 i i i i i

11 1 -8and 9 requires only one folding operation to form the converging flanges or side wall portions 23 thus being less expensive to manufacture than the embodiment of Figs. 5 to 7.
Again all dimensions may be varied as required, illustrative examples only having been given hereinbefore, while general relative dimensions for standard situations will be apparent from the drawings. i It will be seen that a nogging constructed according to i the present invention may be quickly and easily installed and provide very secure mounting for service fittings particularly bathroom and kitchen tap combinations.
While noggings as described and illustrated will therefore be found very effective in achieving the objects for which the invention has been devised, it will be appreciated that many further modifications may be made as will be apparent to scope and ambit of the invention, the general nature of which has been set forth herein.
