Description

a projection(6) of flat plate, with a hole(8) drilled through which a bolt(19) is placed and held by nut(20) so that 2 drilled(8) plates(7) or a 180 degree bent over plate(18) (ie U shaped) having a gap sufficient to fit over the blade(l) so that the rodder can pivot via the drilled holes(8). To this is attached the main Referring to FIG 2 it can be seen that the pivoting rod attachment device according to this invention comprises a rod(15) which at one end has a loop(10) bent at 90 degrees away( 1) from the back of the knife. It has a short piece of rod(9) joined at the 180-degree point(12) of the loop(10) and the main rod(15) its purpose is to make the withdrawal of the rodder from the thoracic cavity snag free. The rod(15) is so long as to protrude far enough past the end of the blade(l) as not to foul the rod(9) and to protrude far enough that when inserted into the thoracic cavity it clears the gullet or oesophagus from the diaphragm. The loop(10) is placed over the gullet or oesophagus(14), and the operator holds the handle(3) and pushes the and the blade(l) of the knife into the thoracic cavity of any small stock the sheep(16) being the one shown here. The plate(5) is not only used as the preferred attachment to the knife but also stops the hand from sliding up blade(l) of the knife.
It will be realised that the pivoting rodder according to this invention is not restricted to the form of attachment as shown in the example but may use jaws or a saddle or any other suitable arrangement that doesn't restrict the blade of the knife or allows ready removal of the pivoting rodding device to allow easy sharpening of the knife. Nor is it restricted to the type of knife to which it may be attached.
r i 1 The claims defining the invention are as follows: 1. A pivoting rodding device including a piece of impervious rod with braced loop at one end and a pivoting means of attachment to a knife on the other end being adapted to fasten the rod to the knife blade or knife handle in such a manner as it can easily be removed to facilitate in sharpening the knife.
2. The pivoting rodding device of claim 1 including a guard with an open slotted central portion at the end by which it is attached to the knife and wherein the attachment of the device is achieved by slotting the guard to fit into grooves cut into the handle of the knife.
3. The pivoting rodding device of claim 1 wherein the device is attached to the knife blade by means of releasable fasteners including a pair of jaws resiliently biased towards each other.
