Complete Specification for the invention entitled: "lImprovements in Ploughs"
The following statement isa full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me
FL f~Ej t3
J
THIS INVENTION relates to improvements in ploughs and the
like.
Throughout the specification the term plough is to be taken
to include any agricultural implement having a main beam
which supports a number of ground engaging members and an
end beam pivotally mounted at one end of the main beam.
The object of the invention is to provide a plough in which the width of cut can be readily varied according to the
nature of the ground being ploughed by utilizing the
10 existing hydraulic system.
"0 *0 In one form the invention resides in a plough comprising a e*°
main beam on which discs or the like are mounted and an
end beam pivotally mounted at one end of the main beam and
hydraulic means for raising and lowering the main beam with respect to the ground, a hydraulic ram connected between
the end beam and the main beam, the hydraulic ram being
coupled into the hydraulic raising and lowering circuit_,jo that the end beam may be rotated with respect to the main
beam to vary the width of cut.
20 The invention will be better understood by reference to the
following description of one specific embodiment. The
description is made with reference to the accompanying
drawings:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of a plough support frame; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the end beam along liae 2-2.
2- -2 10JUN 1,. PATiNr OFFICr
The embodiment is directed to a conventional plough having
a main beam 11 upon which a plurality of discs are mounted
on stump jump arms. The forward end of the main beam 11 is
supported on a wheel generally referred to as the front
furrow wheel. The rear end of the main beam is pivotally
connected at 13 to an end beam 15 for rotation about a
substantially vertical axis. The forward end of the end
beam is supported on a wheel referred to as the land wheel
whilst the rear end of the end beam is supported on a wheel
generally referred to as the rear furrow wheel. Each wheel
is provided with a hydraulic ram so that the main beam can
be raised or lowered with respect to the ground to lift
the discs clear of the ground, and vary the depth of cut or
lower the discs into ground contact. A connecting link 17
SO pivotally attached at 19 to the main beam and is slidably
engaged in a double sided channel member 20 moun ed on the
end beam parallel with its longitudinal axis. A hydraulic
ram 22 is pivotally connected between the main beam and 4nd
beam so that it functions in substantially the same direction
as the connecting link 17. The double sided channel member
has a series of holes 24 therein which are intended to receive
two pins. The sliding portion 26 of the connecting link is
slidably mounted between the two pins. The pins serve as
limiting means to control the degree of movement of the
sliding portion 26. The hydraulic ram hereinafter called the
width of cut ram is connected to the hydraulic circuit which
controls the height of the plough.
In use stop pins are set in the desired position in the double sided channel member 20. The connection of the width of cut ram is incorporated into the hydraulic circuit such that as the discs are lowered so the width of cut is reduced
When the plough enters softer soil the operator operates
the hydraulic controls such that the width of cut is increased,
because the force required to change the position of the
end beam is much less than the force required to lift the
discs clear of the ground and so the width of cut ram pushes
the end beam outwardly ho increase t width of cut. When the plough reaches harder ground the operation is reversed.
When the plough is to be transported the width of cut ram
brings in the end beam to the minimum width of cut position
before the discs are lifted clear ofthe ground thus sim-
plifying the operation.
The connecting link need not take tbe exact form described.
It may have one end slidably mounted on the main beam and the other end pivotally mounted on the end beam. Altern-
atively it may be of variable length and be pivotally mounted
on both the main beam and the end beam.
20 It will be appreciated that the scope of the invention need not be limLited to the particular features and combination
of features prescribed in the embodiment. e

like are mounted and an end beam pivotally mounted at one
end of the main beam and hydraulic means for raising and
lowering the main beam with respect to the ground, a hydraulic ram connected between the end beam and the main beam, the hydraulic ram being coupled into the hydraulic raising and
lowering circuit so that the end beam may be rotated with
respect to the main beam to vary the width of cut.
