BfRUCE-N'ORMAN-BOYS M/A/ BOYS BRUCE NORMAN BOYS Peter Maxwell Associates Blaxland House Suite 10, 5 Ross Street NORTH PARRAMATTA NSW 2151 SILENCER FOR AN OUTBOARD MOTOR NO(S): AU PN 1571 7 March 1995 INVENTION TITLE: *o *s DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:- This invention relates to outboard motors and more particularly to silencing means for outboard motors to be used when the outboard motor is operated out of the water.
During normal operation, outboard motors are usually cooled by the forced flow of salt water and exhaust gasses are discharged through the hub of the propeller under water thereby muffling the exhaust noise.
After use, fresh water is usually fed through the cooling system to flush out any residual salt water. When run out of the water, the exhaust of the outboard motor is not muffled and thus there is a need for a silencer to be used with the outboard motor when the motor is operated out of the water.
According to the invention there is provided a silencer for an outboard motor comprising:an inner member having an outwardly directed flange, an outer member sliceable over the inner member and having an outwardly directed flange, compressible sealing means between the outwardly directed flanges, and adjustable connecting means connecting the inner and outer members together and adapted to move the members and hence the flanges relative to one another so as to compress or relax the sealing means, the arrangement being such that the sealing means may be located in the hub of the propeller of an outboard motor so that when the flanges are moved relatively towards one another, the sealing means is compressed and forced outwardly to form a radially extending seal between the silencer and the hub of the propeller.
In one form of the invention, the inner and outer tubular canister being of slightly larger diameter than the inner canister and being coaxially located with respect to the inner canister.
Preferably, the connecting means comprises a threaded member extending axially from the end of the canister remote from the outwardly directed flange which passes through an aperture in the end of the outer canister remote from its outwardly directing flange and a threaded adjustment member engaged on the threaded member.
In order that the invention ma be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a silencer for an outboard motor according to one embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the silencer of Fig. 1, shown in relation to the hub and propeller of an outboard motor.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a silencer shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of the silencer mounted in the hub of the propeller of an outboard motor.
The silencer 10 shown in the drawings includes an inner member 11 having an outwardly directed flange 13 and an outer member 12 slideable over the inner member 11 and having an outwardly directed flange 14.
In this instance, the inner member 11 is an aluminium canister of circular cross-section and has a closed end 15 remote from the outwardly directed flange 13. The outer member 12 is also an aluminium canister of circular cross-section and has a closed end 16 remote from its outwardly directed flange 14.
A compressible sealing means or O ring 1'7 is located between the outwardly directed flanges 13 and 14. Extending coaxially outwardly from the end 15 of the inner member 11 there is a threaded member 18 that passes through an aperture 20 in the end 16 of the outer member 12. The head of the threaded member 18 engages against a strengthening plate 22 and is secured in place by nut 18a. The threaded member 18 is engaged by a threaded adjustment member 19 which bears against a second

strengthening member 22. Rotation of the adjustment member 19 in one direction will draw the inner and outer members 11, 12 and hence the flanges 13, 14 together thereby compressing the sealing means 17 which will be deformed outwardly as indicted in Fig. 2. Rotation of the adjustment member 19 in the other direction will move the inner members 11, 12 and hence the flanges 13, 14 away from one another to relax the sealing means 17.
As shown in Fig. 4 the sealing means 17 is located in the hub 20 of a propeller 21. The adjustment means 19 is then rotated to draw the inner and outer members 11, 12 to one another thereby compressing the sealing mans 17 between the flanges 13, 14 to form a seal between the silencer and the hub of the propeller. Rotation of the adjustment means in the other direction, will relax the sealing means 17 so that the silencer can be withdrawn from the hub.
As can be seen in Fig. 4, the silencer 10 can be additionally held in place by an elastic tie-strap 23 which is anchored to the outer member 12 and which is engaged around the blades of the propeller 21.
In order to accommodate the various sizes of propellers and their hubs, the silencer of the invention can be manufactured in various sizes.
All will be apparent, once the silencer is securely in place, the outboard motor may be started up and run whilst being flushed with fresh water o°0° without generating undue exhaust noose.
It will be appreciated thai various modifications may be made in details of design and construction without departing from the scope and ambit of the invention.

Claims (4)
1. A silencer for an outboard motor comprising:- an inner member having an outwardly directed flange, an outer member slideable over the inner member and having an outwardly directed flange, compressible sealing means between the outwardly directed flanges, and adjustable connecting means connecting the inner and outer members together and adapted to move the members and hence the flanges relative to one another so as to compress or relax the sealing means, the arrangement being such that the sealing means may be located in the hub of the propeller of an outboard motor so that when the flanges are moved relatively towards one another, the sealing means is compressed and forced outwardly to form a radially extending seal between the silencer and the hub of the propeller.
2. A silencer according to claim 1 wherein the inner and outer members are in the form of tubular canisters with the outer tubular canister being of slightly larger diameter than the inner canister and being coaxially located with respect to the inner canister.
3. A silencer according to claim 1 or clam 2 wherein the connecting means comprises a threaded member extending axially from the end of the •**canister remote from the outwardly directed flange which passes through an aperture in the end of the outer canister remote from its outwardly directing flange and a threaded adjustment member engaged on the threaded member. 6
4. A silencer according to any one of the preceding claims and including an elastic strap anchored to the outer member adapted to be engaged around two blades of the propeller. A silencer for an outboard motor substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings. Dated this 1 day of March 1996 BRUCE-N4R-MAN BOYS- N'/Y Patent Attorneys for the Applicant PETER MAXWELL ASSOCIATES 8EC. -o 113 $*4y r r r r r r cc ro O Y ABSTRACT A silencer (10) for an outboard motor consists of an inner member (11) having an outwardly directed flange an outer member (12) having an outwardly directed flange (14) and a sealing ring (17) between the outwardly directed flanges (13 and 14). The members (11 and 12) are moved relative to one another by a threaded connector The silencer is placed in the hub of the propeller of an outboard motor so that when the flanges (13 and 14) are moved towards one another, the sealing ring (17) is compressed and forced outwardly to form a radially extending seal between the silencer (10) and the hub of the propeller.
