Abstract

The invention relates to a process for electronically charging on board a vehicle for the use of toll roads. Information required to recognise the present geographical position of the vehicle are wirelessly received, toll roads are identified and tolls to be paid are entered in a storage device, for example a chip card. In order to monitor the functioning of the process or the working order of the device or its components required to carry out the process, their working order is diagnosed and transmitted to a competent control authority upon request. A device for carrying out the process has a signalling device (4) by means of which diagnostic data on the working order of the device or its individual components may be wirelessly queried.
