Description of the Invention The liquid container of the invention is suitable for releasable connection to liquid applicator apparatus which includes pressure supply means and applicator means, and whereby *"**connection of the container to the liquid applicator apparatus provides communication between the container fluid delivery tube and the applicator means, and between the container pressure supply communication means and the pressure supply means.
The container of the invention may be provided with pressure supply communication means for effecting communication between the container and pressure supply means of a liquid applicator apparatus. Preferably the pressure supply communication means is in the form of an opening or openings in he cover member.
f 1 T'r q< 8 Thus, in connecting the fluid container body to the liquid applicator means in forming the portable liquid applicator apparatus of the present invention, the fluid container may be provided with a manually effected opening in the puncturable/breachable cover member such that the fluid delivery tube is open at both ends, or the fluid container may be provided with one or more manually and/or mechanically effected openings in the puncturable/breachable cover member so as to provide communication between the container and the pressure supply means when the container is connected to the pressure supply means.
The container cover member may be provided with weakened portions in the shape of at least one of the communication openings to be formed by puncturing/breaching the cover member with the puncturing/breaching means, to facilitate ease of forming the opening(s).
The connection of the liquid container of the invention to the portable liquid applicator apparatus is preferably in the form of a complementary mounting, for example in the form of a screw-thread or a bayonet-fitting.
The liquid container is preferably non-pressurised.
e The puncturable/breachable cover member of the container may be provided with protective means, such as a cap, for protecting the cover member and entry to the fluid delivery tube during transport or storage of the container prior to connection of the container to form the portable liquid applicator apparatus of the invention.
The container of the invention may be of any suitable shape, and the container body, the puncturable/ breachable cover member and/or the fluid delivery tube may be formed separately from, or formed integrally with, each R ther. For example, they may be formed integrally by moulding Sfrom a suitable plastics material, although the container may Lij e fr-med frcm anv suitable material.
The liquid container is preferably disposable and designed for a single use to facilitate consistency of the liquid flowing from the liquid applicator appalatus of the invention.
It is preferred that the puncturing/breaching means of the liquid applicator apparatus of the invention punctures/ breaches the cover member at the container outlet to provide communication between said container and said liquid connection means, and punctures/breaches the cover member at the container outlet to provide communication between said container and said pressure supply means. The puncturing/ breaching means may be of any convenient form suitable for providing an opening or openings in the cover member at the container outlet. For example, the puncturing/breaching means could be in the form of a knife edge or a series of teeth "adapted to provide an opening of any convenient shape in the cover member at the container outlet.
In a preferred embodiment of the liquid applicator apparatus of the invention, the liquid connection means is in the form of a tubular member which slidably connects with the fluid delivery tube of the container. More preferably, the "liquid connection means is a cylindrical tube and the second puncturing/breaching means consists of teeth arranged in a :circular formation at the end ot that tube remote from the spray head or nozzle of the apparatus.
The gas supply means of the apparatus of the invention may include gas supply mounting means for mounting a gas cylinder. In a preferred arrangement the gas supply means z:cmprises a gas bulb and includes communication means to *enetrate the closure of the bulb. The gas cylinder or bulb may be releasably connected to the liquid applicator apparatus *i ,A D r housed within the apparatus.
Preferably the pressure regulating means is a gas regulator that may be pre-set or be provided with means for adjustment. Regulation of the gas supply means is especially important in the use of the container and apparatus of the invention in the application of viscous liquids such as pesticidal formulations. In one embodiment of the apparatus of the invention the gas bulbs utilized are charged to a pressure in the order of 700 kPa and the gas regulating means is adjusted to provide a constant discharge pressure of approximately 200 kPa in the liquid container.
The apparatus of the invention may include valve means to control the pressure within the container. The valve means may include shut-off valve means whereby the liquid container is substantially sealed (the valves close) when the applicator is removed from the container. The valve means may also include relief valve means whereby any excess gas can be discharged from the liquid container, particularly after spraying. The valve means may also include safety relief *valve means whereby gas from the liquid container will be discharged when the pressure in the container exceeds a preset pressure. The valve means may be provided on the container 6 cover.
Preferably the liquid connection means includes control valve means for controlling flow of liquid from the liquid applicator means, whereby stopping the liquid supply downstream of the liquid container results in the pressure regulating means closing the gas supply means.
While it is preferable that the releasable ccntainer, the liquid applicator means, the liquid connection means, the gas supply means, and the pressure regulating means, form a portable unit, various components of the apparatus or combinations of those components could form ,j seara te portable U.nits. For example, the liquid applicator means could form one unit to be held in one hand of the user, and the combination of the container and the regulated gas supply could form a separate unit to be held in the other hand of the user, or hung from a belt on the user, or hung from another object or structure, for example, a ladder.
The container of the invention and the components of the apparatus of the invention may be made of any suitable material such as plastics or metal, depending upon the manufacturing technique used to produce the apparatus and also upon the properties of the liquid to be applied.
In order that this invention may be more easily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention, wherein:- :o Fig 1 is a front view of liquid applicator apparatus and a liquid container constructed in accordance with the invention; Figs 2 and 3 are sectional, enlarged part-front views of the liquid applicator apparatus shown in Fig 1; Fig 4 is a front view of a liquid container in accordance with the invention; Figis 5 to 8 are part-front views of the container of Fig 4 which illustrate different types of container cover members; Fig 9 is a sectional enlarged part-front view of a liquid applicator apparatus/container releasable connection in accordance with the invention; "v.
a. 9**a at a Fig 10 is a part perspective view of one embodiment of the container valve means; Fig 11 is a side elevational view of an assembly of a liquid-spray applicator apparatus fitted to a single-use liquid container in accordance with a practical embodiment of the invention; and Fig 12 is a cross sectional view of the assembly of liquid applicator apparatus and liquid container shown in Fig 11.
The spraying apparatus 10 illustrated in Figure 1 is adapted for use with a single-use disposable container 11.
The container 11 is connected by a screw-thread at its upper end 12 to the branch leg 14 of a T-piece mounting body One arm 16 of the T-piece 15 is releasably connected to a gas bulb mounting 19 through a pressure regulator 17.
The gas bulb mounting 19 provides a clip-in mounting 18 for a gas bulb which when clipped into position, communicates with the pressure regulator 17. For this purpose the clip-in mounting 18 is of conventional form and includes a tubular spike and seal arrangement which upon insertion of the sealed gas bulb or sparklet therein, communicates sealably with the mounting 18 and through the mounting 18 with the pressure regulator. 17.
The other arm 22 of the T-piece body 15 is connected through a manually controllable on/off valve 23 to a sprayhead or nozzle 25. A trigger 24 is operable to control the valve 23 and thus spray issuing from the nozzle 25. Furthermore, the regulator 17 is actuated by a pressure differential whereby closure of the valve 23 will result in immediate closure of the gas supply from the pressure regulator.
Accordingly, the regulator also acts as an automatic on/off 3HA valve for the gas bulb which operates without the need to provide a separate manually operated valve and the associated high pressure seals. This results in minimising any gas leakage from the relatively small volume gas bulb.
As best seen in Figs 4 to 9 the outlet of the disposable container 11 is provided with a cover member 28 and a fluid delivery tube 29 extends from the cover member and terminates at its distal end 30 adjacent the container base.
The fluid delivery tube 29 could be angled to terminate adjacent the bottom corner or sides of the container to facilitate removal, when in use, of substantially all the container contents. The container 11, fluid delivery tube 29 and cover member 28 are integrally formed by moulding from a suitable plastics material.
0* As best seen in Fig 9, a supply tube 32 for supplying liquid to the sprayhead is slidably received at its .lower end within the upper end of fluid delivery tube 29, with its other end adapted for connection to the sprayhead. An annular sealing washer 34 is provided at the junction between the T-piece arm 22 and the control valve 23. The leg 14 of the T-piece body 15 includes an internally-threaded annular flange 35 and a stepped bore 36 adapted to receive the cover member 28 and container upper end 12.
5 Referring to Fig 4, the cover member 28 is integrally moulded with the container 11, and a protective cap 43 is screwed over the cover member and container opening, whilst Figs 6 to 8 illustrate cover members 28 having different forms of pressure supply openings 45, 46 and 47 for communication with the pressurised gas supply.
i v iriO~ l The cover member 28 of Fig 5 does not have a pressure supply opening and, as best seen in Fig 2, the gas supply opening of this closure member is formed by cutting teeth 38 which penetrate the cover member 28 to provide communication of the gas supply with the interior of the container when the container is screwed into the apparatus.
In operation, referring to the embodiment of Fig 9, the protective cap 43 is first removed and the container upper end 12 is screwed into the body flange 35, causing the supply tube 32 of the apparatus to slide within the fluid delivery tube 29 of the container, or if the cover member 28 prevents access to the delivery tube 29, causing the supply tube 32 to cut an opening in the cover member so as to permit the supply tube 32 to slide within the fluid delivery tube 29 of the container. The cover member 28 is trapped between the o* container top and the body flange 35 and this acts as a seal to prevent leakage of pressurised liquid from the container/ flange connection. The cover opening 45 provides communication between the gas supply and the container contents, and the fluid delivery tube 29/supply tube 32 connection provides communication between the container contents and the.sprayhead In the embodiment illustrated in Fig 10, the cover 28 of the container 11 is provided with two shut-off valves and 52 which communicate with the fluid delivery tube 29 and the pressure supply, respectively, whereby when the applicator is removed from the container the valves 50 and 52 close thereby sealing the container 11.
Referring to Figs 11 and 12, there is shown an assembly of a liquid-spray applicator apparatus, for example, a garden-spray applicator, fitted to a single-use disposable liquid container, in which the liquid applicator comprises an adjustable spray nozzle 1 connected via a neck section to a
'VL.
N( C side arm of the T-piece member 2, with a covered gas-pressure source bulb 3 connected to the opposite side arm of the T-piece member 2, said T-piece member 2 being provided with a spool valve 4 adapted to be operated by actuating lever 5 with lever lock 6, and also provided with an annular flow control shuttle 7, the central arm of the T-piece member 2 being connected via screw-threading and a cap seal to the single-use disposable container 8 adapted to house the liquid delivery tube 9.
Thus it can be seen that the spraying apparatus of the embodiment is simple to operate, compact and readily portable. The apparatus provides a useful alternative container and useful alternative arrangements for operatively connecting the liquid container to the spraying apparatus The spraying apparatus of th. invention has the advantage over the prior art known to the applicant in that when the container is removed from the apparatus body 15, a fluid Sdelivery tube does not protrude from the apparatus, thus avoiding damage of the tube and/or contamination. The single use disposable container and integral nature of the container, e: cover member and fluid delivery tube, facilitates a reliably constant mix and also eliminates the need for cleaning the S. container. The incorporation of a fluid delivery tube in a container reduces the usefulness of the container for other .:purposes because it is not easy to refill. As repeated use of the empty container is thus discouraged, the possibility of adverse consequences of repeated use, ie poisoning and contamination, is also reduced.
The invention has been described above as used with a sprayhead incorporating a pressure supply means in the form of a compressed gas cylinder. However it will be realised by those skilled in the art that the pressure supply means of the apparatus in accordance with the invention can also be an c\ external pressure supply or mechanically operated pressure -s upply source such as used in hand-operated compression P. 3-yerS other hand-operated sprayers.
II
It will of course be realised that whilst the above has been given by way of illustrative examples of this invention, all such and other modifications and variations hereto, as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art, are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of this invention aE is hereinafter claimed.
The matter contained in each of the following claims is to be read as part of the general description of the present invention.
