Description
A"rAUSTRALIA Reguuiln Act 1990 Original Complete Specification Standard Patent Invention Title- I
S
St ~5S.
A
This invention relates to an improved water diversion device.
The following description of the application of the water diversion device is given, by way of illustration only. This particular instance relates to the diversion of water at low pressure. It should be understood that this invention is not limited to such applications, and may be used in other areas, such as is found with mains pressure.
With decreasing water supplies including water restrictions being placed on domestic households during harsh summer months, and the increasing cost of town water usage, the watering of gardens and lawns has become an expensive process and is often given a low priority causing unsightly gardens and frustrated gardeners.
is the object of this invention to assist gardeners in watering their gardens and lawns at a low cost while using otherwise wasted rainwater, which is accomplished in the following manner: The water diversion device is made from a water resistant, durable material :ensuring the device is kept intact under extreme conditions. The device is primarily rectangular in appearance with a triangular insert for the diversion of the rainwater. When the triangular insert is in operation it allows rainwater to be diverted, when not in use the rainwater flows through the water 20 diverter to the standard drainage system.
The water diversion device can be attached to any water collection device a gutter, a downpipe, a water tank and the like. In particular, the water diversion device can be attached to a downpipe to allow rainwater to be diverted from the downpipe through a hose to the garden or lawn.
The actual main material of the water diversion device is waterproof and can be such materials as PVC, plastic, fibreglass, aluminium, coated steel and the like.
With the above and additional objects and advantages in view, as will hereinafter appear, this invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described by way of example and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a water diversion device according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a front view of the water diversion device; Figure 3 is a back view of the water diversion device; Figures 4 is a top view of the water diversion device; Figures 5 is a side view of the water diversion device; Figures 6 is a front sectional view of the water diversion device with the water catchment unit removed; Figures 7 is a side sectional view of the water diversion device with the water catchrnent unit closed; Figures 8 is a side sectional view of the water diversion device with the water catchment unit opened; Figures 9 is a side sectional view of the water diversion device with the water :catchment unit separated; In the various figures of the drawings, like reference characters designate like .i parts.
Referring to the drawings, figures 1 through 9 show the front, rear, side, top and bottom of the water diversion device according to the present invention, which includes a body 1.
The body 1 of the water diversion device is primarily a rounded rectangle with a water inlet opening 5 at the top of the body 1 and a water outlet opening 6 at the bottom of the body 1. Water passes downwards through the water inlet opening 5 and is diverted into the water catchment unit 2 by a water deflector 11. The water deflector 11 is rectangular and of a relatively thin thickness. It is attached to the back and sides of the internal lower edge of the water inlet opening 5, and deflects downwards and inwards at an approximately 45 degree angle.
The water catchment unit 2 is clipped to the body 1 by way of a groove 21.
The groove 21 allows the water catchment unit 2 to be moved in and out of body 1. Adjustment ridges 23 are spaced at regular intervals at the bottom of the water catchment unit 2 to allow the unit to be moved to different positions to regulate the flow of water through the downpipe, and through the water catchment unit 2. The water catchment unit 2 is prevented from dislodging from the body 1 by means of a stop lug 22 coming in contact with the pressure lug 12 located on the front wall at the base of the opening for the water catchment unit 2.
When in a fully closed position, the water passes directly through the water catclment unit 2 to the adaptor nozzle 3. When in a partially closed position, the water is divided between the downpipe and the water catchment unit 2.
And finally, when in a fully opened position, the water passes through the water diversion device directly into the downpipe.
Overflow chambers 15 and 16 are located either side of the water catchment 0* unit 2. These overflow chambers 15 and 16 are separated from the water o catchmnent unit 2 by internal walls 13 and 14. Water fills the water catchment unit 2 and when it reaches the top of the water catchunent unit 2 it flows via the overflow inlets 17 and 18 into the overflow chambers 15 and 16, and down through the overflow outlets 19 and 20 into the water outlet opening 6 and on into the downpipe.
The hose bracket 4 allows the hose attached to the adaptor nozzle 3 to be 20 stored above the water catchment unit 2 to prevent water overflow.
.••goi The water diversion device can be attached to a supporting stand, which could be a wall, a fence or the like, by means of fixture holes 7 through S" Numerous alterations of the structures herein discussed will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. However, it is to be understood that the present disclosure relates to preferred emb diments of the invention which are for the purpose of illustration only, arid are not to be construed as a limitation of the invention.
Claims (4)
1. A water diversion device comprising: a primarily rounded rectangular body; said body containing water inlet and outlet openings for the disbursement of the water; said body containing a water diverter to ensure the direction of water flow into a water catchment unit; said body containing a movable water catchment unit in which water may be accumulated and diverted via an adaptor nozzle; said body containing overflow chambers with inlets and outlets for the channeling of excess water through the body; said body containing fixture holes for attachment of the water diversion device to a stand; and said body containing a hose bracket to allow the hose attached to the adaptor nozzle to be stored to prevent water overflow.
2. A water diversion device according to claim 1 wherein any portion of the body is fabricated from PVC. *9 A water diversion device according to claim 1 wherein any portion of the body is fabricated from plastic.
