(ORIGINAL)
ritr c Ir rci r I r rli: rrrr 1 tr f r (C it I t Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor: MARCEL VAN RYN MARCEL VAN RYN ,t r I r cr rrir r te Irr~i rIrtri r o or L Address for Service:SANDERCOCKS PATENT ATTORNEYS 6/50-54 Robinson Street, DANDENONG VIC 3175 Invention Title: "CONTAINERS AND CLOSURES" Details of Associated Provisional Application(s): No(s): Provisional Patent Application No. PK9483/91 filed on 15th November, 1991 and Provisional Patent Application No. PL0519/92 filed on 22 January, 1992.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 1 11L.pr la- TITLE: CONTAINER FIELD OF THE INVENTION: This invention relates to a container and a closure.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION: There is a need to provide containers and closures which will show evidence of tampering or pilfering.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION: The present invention provides a container having an open end, threading adjacent the open end and one or more abutments or ratchet teeth below the threading.
The present invention also provides a combination of a container and a closure, wherein the container has an open end, threading adjacent the open end and one or more abutments or ratchet teeth below the threading and the closure comprises a top, a depending skirt, threading within the skirt, a ring secured to the bottom of the skirt by frangible means and one or more abutments or ratchet teeth on the inside of the ring, and, wherein the one or more abutments or ratchet teeth of the container and the o one or more abutments or ratchet teeth of the closure are *so shaped and/or oriented as to be adapted to allow the *;closure to be screwed onto the container and in so doing to rampingly move over one another but such as to interengage i with one another on unscrewing of the closure from the container, whereby to restrict the ring from rotating with the skirt so that, in use, the frangible means will break to cause the ring to separate from the skirt and further comprising that the container or closure is provided with retention means adapted to retain the ring on the container after such separation from the skirt and wherein said 5,4" 9S1124,cmsspe.083,vaniyn.ame,1
I
2 closure is formed by injection moulding and has said one or more abutments or ratchet teeth formed on the inside of the ring directly by said injection moulding.
PREFERRED FEATURES OF THE INVENTION: Such separation of the ring and the skirt can serve as evidence of tampering or pilfering.
Preferably the one or more abutments or ratchet teeth on the container or closure is provided with a taper surface to ease movement of the ring over said one or more abutments or ratchet teeth as the closure is screwed onto the bottle.
The frangible means preferably comprises thin webs extending between the skirt and the ring.
It is to be noted that ramp members may be located on located entirely or only partially around a perimeter.
IRamp members may be replaced by abutment members but one of :I each pair of container and associated closure should have 25 a ramp member.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS 4J. A specific example of a container and a closure in 30 accordance with this invention will now be described with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which:- C Ct 951124,cmsspe.083,vantyn.ame,2 I I -3- Figure 1 is a schematic top plan view of the container, Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the container, Figure 3 is a side elevational and partly sectional view of the closure, Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the closure, Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of another closure showing a modification, Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of another closure showing o, a modification, 1 Figure 7 is a fragmentary view of another closure showing a modification, es Figure 8 is a schematic top plan view of another container, Figure 9 is a side elevational view of the container of Figure 8, Figure 10 is a top plan and partly sectional view of another closure, and I Figure 11 is a side plan and partly sectional view of the closure of Figure INTEGER LIST 1. Flanks DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH RESPECT TO THE DRAWINGS 20 The container 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2 has a neck 3, an open end 4, threading 6, and abutment bead 7 and ratchet teeth 8.
The bead 7 and ratchet teeth 8 can extend, if desired, in I the regions C and D of Figure 1 although this has not been s depicted.
The closure 21 shown in Figures 3 and 4 comprises a top 22, a skirt 23, threading 24 within the skirt 23 and a ring 26 joined to the bottom of the skirt 23 by frangible webs 27.
On the inside of the ring 26 are ratchet teeth 28 and taper surfaces 29 and 31 are provided.
The closure can be formed in a single piece by plastics injection moulding and the taper surfaces 31 assisted in 921116,cmsspe.075,RENAMO.PRO,4 releasing the closure from a die.
j In use, the closure 21 is placed on the container 1 and is turned clockwise when viewed from above so as to screw the closure 21 onto the container 1 to close the container.
I!
In the process of so closing the container, the taper surfaces 29 will ease the ring 26 over the abutment bead 7.
i Further, the ratchet teeth 8 and 28 are so oriented as to i 10 ramp over one another.
SHowever, when the closure 21 is turned on the container 1 in an anticlockwise direction when viewed from above, the ratchet teeth 8 and 28 will so engage with one another as to restrict the ring 26 from turning with the skirt 23 and continued turning of the skirt 23 will cause the frangible webs 27 to break so that the ring 26 will separate from the skirt 23.
Continued turning of the skirt 23 will allow the top 22 and the skirt 23 to be removed from the container leaving the ring 26 on the container and restricted against coming off the container by the abutment bead 7.
The separation of the ring 26 from the skirt 23 can provide "ii evidence of tampering or pilfering.
i~e The container 41 shown in Figures 8 and 9 is similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2 and like reference numerals denote like parts.
However, in this instance, the ratchet teeth 8 have a different form and have flanks 42, 43 and 44.
The closure 51 shown in Figures 10 and 11 is similar to that shown in Figures 2 and 3 and like reference numerals denote like parts.
921116,cmsspe.075,RENAMO.PRO,5 1h, I 6 However, in this instance, the ratchet teeth 28 have flanks 52, 53 and 54.
In this instance, engagement of the flanks 52 and 44 will ease the ring 26 over the ratchet teeth 8, engagement of the flanks 43 and 53 will restrict the ring 26 from turning with the skirt 23 to break the web 27 and engagement of the flanks 42 and 52 will restrict against the ring 26 coming off the container.
In general, the above shows many forms of ramp members which may allow abutments to pass in one direction but not in another direction and many forms of abutments which will hold camper rings on container necks.
Finally it is to be understood that the inventive concept in any of its aspects can be incorporated in many different constructions so that the generality of the preceding description is not to be superseded by the particularity of the attached drawings. Various alterations, modifications and/or additions may be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit and ambit of the invention.
Additional constructions are shown in the specification of I ,Australian Patent Application No. PL0519 which is to be considered to be imported hereinto.
The claims and drawings form part of the disclosure of this specification.
