Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT NOSE GUARD THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT IS A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THIS INVENTION, INCLUDING THE BEST METHOD OF PERFORMING IT KNOWN TO ME:- .This invention relates to a Nose Guard, in particular to protect the nose against Solar Radiation.
The risk from solar ultraviolet radiation in producing skin cancers is well known particularly in countries such as Australia where a large amount of leisure time is spent outdoors. The nose is a most particularly sensitive part of the human face and is, due to its construction and position, especially liable to sun burning. Various creams and ointments are sold to protect this part of the body but these are often messy and variable in their protection. In addition, such creams are affected by perspiration and have a :limited applicability.
The present invention seeks to overcome some of these disadvantages in prior art protective devices for the nose, or at least to ameliorate them, or to provide an alternative thereto.
According to the invention there is a provided a nose guard including a covering for the nose made of an ultraviolet opaque material and having means for attaching the covering on or about the nose.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a nose guard including a covering made of an ultraviolet opaque material having a central ridge portion and extending therefrom two substantially -2triangular side pieces having a common apex, and means for attaching the covering to a support.
Preferably, the means for attaching the covering to a support comprises a hook like element which provides a snap-fit onto the frames of spectacles or sunglasses. Alternatively, the means to attach to a support comprise a bridge element having horn pieces of the type used in spectacles to support the spectacle frame upon the bridge of the nose.
10 A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with respect to the following drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the nose guard according to one embodiment of the invention; and 15 Figure 2 shows the embodiment of Fig.l in use **attached to a pair of spectacles.
S.As shown in the drawing the nose guard in one embodiment of the invention is an integral piece made of an ultraviolet opaque material such as paper, a plastics material or metal or other suitable material within the knowledge of a person skilled in the art.
The nose guard has a central ridge 10 and two side pieces 12,14 extending from the ridge 10. The side pieces 12,14 may be substantially triangular in shape, or at least of a shape which would provide coverage of a person's nose.
Attached to the apex 16 is a hook shaped element 18 which is bent backwards to provide a gap 20 between the end of the hook element 18 and the apex 16 of the nose guard. The hook element can be made of a -3resilient material or the gap 20 can be made sufficiently small so that the hook element 18 can be a press fit over the frame of a pair of spectacles or sunglasses. The hook 18 positions the nose piece slightly forward of the person's nose to provide ventilation and a measure of comfort to the wearer.
In addition, the base of the guard can extend below the bottom of a person's nose to provide shadowing of the nostril area. Pads (not shown) may be attached to the inside of the guard at several points around the base of the guard to provide support for the guard and to position it resting on but spaced from the nose of the wearer. However, it is contemplated that the nose guard can be so supported simply by the hook means 18 at the apex 16, the nose guard being made of a sufficiently resilient material or the hook element 18 being sufficiently a press fit to the frames supporting the guard for this purpose.
In some circumstances, it may also be important to protect the nose when neither sunglasses nor spectacles are in use by the wearer. In this case the nose guard can be provided with a bridge support element at the apex 16 designed to extend either side of the bridge of the nose and having pads or horns to rest the nose guard upon the bridge of the nose in the manner of spectacle frame supports.
Alternatively, the nose guard may be permanently fixed to spectacles or sunglasses rather than being removable as stated above. In this case the nose guard may be made integral with the frame or may be bonded to it after separate manufacture.
The nose guard provides a simple and effective means of protecting the sensitive nose area of a person's face. The material of the guard can be made more -4readily ultraviolet opaque than can the specially designed creams made for this purpose. The nose guard is not subject to any deterioration due to perspiration. The guard is preferably readily detachable from spectacle frames or can be secured to the nose of a wearer directly providing simple and effective protection against sun damage to the nose.
S. Although the invention has been described above with respect to a preferred embodiment variations therein 10 are contemplated within the knowledge of a person skilled in the art.

Claims (3)

  1. 3. A nose guard as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said means to support comprises a bridge element extending across said apex and having feet or pads to enable the o covering to be supported on the bridge of a person's nose.
  2. 4. A nose guard as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said means to support comprises the frame of spectacles or sunglasses to which said apex is bonded. A nose guard as claimed in any one of Claims 1-4 further including pad elements secured at the base of said nose guard, distal from said apex, to support said nose guard away from said nose. -6-
  3. 6. A nose guard substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing. Dated this 25th day of July 1994 JOHN ZEISER Patent Attorneys for the Applicant: HALFORD CO e S* see e -7- ABSTRACT (Figure 1) A nose guard made of an ultraviolet opaque and stable material has a generally nose conforming shape to cover a wearer's nose. The nose guard is attached to spectacles or sunglasses by a hook 18 or similar element which provides a snap-fit. The nose guard comprises a central ridge 10 and two side pieces 12,14. The hook element 18 where spectacles or sunglasses are not used may comprise a bridge element extending across the apex 16 and having feet or pads to allow the nose guard to be supported on the bridge of a wearer's nose.
