Patents Act 1952 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
(ORIGINAL)
662941 Name of Applicant: GAVIN DAVID OSBORNE Actual Inventor(s): GAVIN DAVID OSBORNE Address for Service:SANDERCOCKS PATENT ATTORNEYS S6/50-54 Robinson Street, DANDENONG VIC 3175 Invention Title: LOG HOLDER Details of Associated Provisional Application(s): No(s): Australian Provisional Patent Application No. PL0075/91 lodged on 19th December, 1991.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: la- TITLE: LOG HOLDER FIELD OF THE INVENTION: This invention relates to a log holder.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION: It is common to cut a tree trunk or limb to a particular length for use as firewood but although the length may be cut to that desired, the diameter of the log may make it unsuitable for a particular size fireplace or it may be that kindling wood is required.
To split a log of wood it is usual to place one end of the log on a support which may be a chopping block or the ground and strike the other end with an axe or a splitter.
When a log is split with an axe or a splitter it is common 20 for the resultant two pieces of wood to fly off and if further splitting of one or both of those pieces is required it will be necessary for a person to collect one or both of those pieces and then replace them on the support for further splitting. Such collection and replacing is tedious and annoying.
If a considerable amount of kindling is to be cut there will be a substantial amount of collecting and replacing and it is noted that many back injuries are caused when stooping.
The present invention seeks to at least, in part, overcome the above problem.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION 4 4 The present invention provides a log holding device 950S24,pc.083,osbomtnc4me,1 2 comprising an upright member, the upright member having a support at a lower end thereof or being adapted to be connected to a support at a lower end thereof, a log holding member mounted to the upright member to pivot about a generally horizontal axis and adapted to move about said axis towards adopting a low position but movable about said axis to a high position to enable, in use, a log of wood to be placed between the log holding member and the support with one end of the log supported by the support and means for urging the log holding member, in use, towards said low position to abut against the other end of the log whereby in use to hold the log whereafter the log may be split by a user from said other end towards said one end with an axe or with a splitter.
PREFERRED FEATURES OF THE INVENTION gee 20 Preferably the log holding member is such as will hold the log at said other end only in a localised area so that, in ~use, portions of the log outside said area may be split from the log while the log continues to be held by the log holding member.
As stated there may be a support at a lower end of the upright member. That support may comprise a base to which the upright menber is mounted or attached.
More preferably the upright member is adapted to be connected to a support and to this end the upright member may carry one or more brackets by means of which it may be secured to a support.
In a preferred instance brackets are provided by means of which the upright member may be secured to a support.
95072 1,msspc083,osbrncvn c,2 2a-.
The support is preferably a chopping block.
In a preferred instance, the log holding member is mounted *999 9 9..

Means may be provided for locking the sleeve at the selected height. That means may include a pin, bolt or screw Jhich can pass through a hole in the sleeve into a hole in the upright member. The sleeve may be threaded or carry a nut to locate such a bolt.
The upright member and the sleeve are preferably of square or rectangular section.
The sleeve preferably pivotally mounts an arm which carries the log holding member.
A spring preferably extends between the sleeve and the arm to provide the bias.
The log holding member is preferably a spike located on the 20 arm.
Preferably the spike is such that it can be driven into the S: log of wood such as by an axe or splitter.
25 An exemplary construction of a log holding device will now be described with the aid of the accompanying drawings.
BR7TF DESCRIPTION OF THE VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a rear view of the log holding device, and Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the log holding device.
INTEGER LIST 1. Log holding device 921123,cmnspc.75,osbormcezip.
4 2. Upright member 3. Plastic cap 4. Brackets 6. Holes 7. Holes 8. Side 9. Sleeve Hole 21. Retaining clip 22. Clevis pin 24. Yoke 26. Flat Bar 27. Bolt 28. Arm 29. Spike 31. Pointed end 32. Head end 33. Spring 20 DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH RESPECT TO THE DRAWINGS The log holding device 1 shown in the drawings comprises an upright member 2 formed of square section steel tube which has a plastic cap 3 and welded on brackets 4 which are 25 provided with holes 6.
By means of the brackets 4 and holes 6 the upright member may be secured by screws or other suitable means to one side of a chopping block (not shown).
The upright member 2 has three holes 7 in a side 8.
Mounted on the upright member 2 is a sleeve 9 of square cross-section.
The sleeve 9 has a hole 20 and a clevis pin 22 passes through the hole 20 and into a selected one of the holes 7 921 123,cmsspc.07,osborncp,4 5 to locate the sleeve 9 at a selected height on the upright member 2. A retaining clip 21 passes through the clevis pin 22 to hold it is position.
A yoke 24 is defined by two pieces of flat bar 26 welded to the upper end of the sleeve 9.
A bolt 27 passes through the yoke 24 and mounts an arm 28 for pivotal movement in an up and down direction.
The arm 28 carries a log holding member in the form of a spike 29 having a pointed end 31 and a head end 32.
A spring 33 extends between the arm 28 and the sleeve 9 and 15 biases the arm and hence the pointed end 31 towards a down position.
In use, the device 1 is mounted to a chopping block as previously stated, the sleeve 9 is raised to the desired position to suit a log to be split and is held in that position by the bolt 22 locating in one of the holes 7.
The arm 28 is then raised against the bias of the spring 33 and a log of wood is placed beneath the pointed end 31 25 preferably such that the pointed end is located to one side of the top of the log. The arm is then released and the pointed end 33 will hold the log of wood. Improved holding can be had by hitting the head end 32 with an axe or splitter to drive the pointed end 33 into the log.
Chips of wood can then be split from the log with .eawe without displacing the log from the block.
Finally, it is to be understood that the inventive concept in any of its aspects can be incorporated in many different ^t %constructions so that the generality of the preceding Sdescription is not to be superseded by the particularity of 921 123,cmsspe.075,osbomctcap, 6 the attached drawings. Various alterations, modifications and/or addition-s f be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit and ambit of the invention.
The claims, drawings and the specification of any associated application form part of the disclosure of this specification.
