PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
ORIGINAL
t C f rC t r t t t Name of Applicant: Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: Invention Title: The following statement is performing it known to me o a o a a t a performing it known to me TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT MUSICWAY CORPORATION LIMITED Michael J. Hollyman CALLINAN LAWRIE, 278 High Street, Kew, 3101, Victoria, Australia "MEDIA STORAGE AND DISPLAY SYSTEM" a full description of this invention, including the best method of 7/2/95LP6610.CS,1 This specification relates to a media storage and display system and refers particularly, though not exclusively, to a system for the storage and display of media for sound and/or video reproduction and including, but not being limited to, pre-recorded and blank audio cassettes, pre-recorded and blank video cassettes, and pre-recorded and blank compact discs.
In domestic installations and smaller commercial installations, it has been normal to have pre-recorded and blank audio and video cassettes, and compact discs (hereinafter collectively referred to as "Discs") stored in cabinets and other storage devices. These quite often have drawers and one is required to pull out lUthe draw to see what is in it. This can make it awkward when looking for a particular Disc in that one may have to open a number of drawers to find the particular Disc. Furthermore, by virtue of the slots located in the drawers the *storage of Discs, particularly for Discs in containers of more than one, can be quite 4.difficult. Also, separate size drawers are required for audio cassettes, video cassettes, and compact discs. This means that one can have a number of cabinets, each of which is not full, due to the different storage requirements.
Also, whenever shelving systems have been used, they have not been appropriate in that Discs have fallen out, they have not been able to be displayed properly and they have been awkward to remove.
It is therefore thg pri-ncipal object of the present inven tion to provide a media storage and display system wherein Discs may be stored safely, with relative security, and with easy display to be able to determine what is stored and where.
-2- With the above and other objects in mind the present invention provides a media storage and display system comprising a first end wall, a second end wall spaced from and parallel to said first end wall, said first and second end walls being substantially identical, at least one base extending between said first and second end walls, there being a rear wall associated with said at least one base, said rear wall extending from said first wall to said second wall, said base being at an included angle to said rear wall, said included angle being approximately said base also being at a base angle to the horizontal, said base angle being between 100 and 20', each of said first and second end walls being mounted on a plinth and each of said plinths has a substantially cylindrical pin extending from said plinth and locating in a hole in the lower regions of said end wall, there being a headed pin locating in a second hole in said end wall to secure said plinth to said end wall.
It is preferred that the base angle is approximately 150.
Preferably there is provided a fastener in said end wall to locate it under the head of said headed pin to assist in said securing.
In order that the invention may be fully understood there shall now be described by way of non-limitative example only a preferred construction of a media storage and display system incorporating the principal features of the present invention, the description being with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front perspective view from above of the media storage and 30/12/94J41688.NP,3i k o display system; Figure 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the media storage and display system of Figure 1, with the cross-section being taken along the lines of and in the direction of arrows 2-2 on Figure 1; Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the media storage and display system; Figure 4 is a top plan view of the media storage and display system; Figure 5 is a partial exploded view showing the securing arrangement of the media storage anid display system; and Figure 6 is an end view in partial relief of the media storage and display JX system showing the way in which they can be stacked.
sytmTo refer to the drawings, there is shown a media storage and display sytmwhich generally comprises a first end wall 10 and a second end wall 12 spaced from but substantially parallel to the first end wall 10. The end walls and 12 are substantially identical. Extending between the first and second end walls 10 and 12 are two spaced apart and parallel bases 14. Associated with each base 14 is a rear wall 16 with the included angle 20 between each rear wall 16 and each base 14 being approximately 90 It is to be noted that there is a gap 32 between the base 14 and the rear walls 16 in each instance. Each base 14 is at a base angle 22 to the horizontal. That base angle is preferably in the range of to 20 *with the rnQst preferred angle being approximately To allow for proper resting of Discs (as hereinbefore defined) against the end walls 10,12 the end walls 10,12 are shaped with projecting portions 34 and -4i _Jt L3-- "l rul( DC~iiWn~- recessed portions 36. In this way if the Disc placed against the end wall and resting on a base 14 and rear wall 16 will be fully supported vertically, horizontally, and laterally.
Each end wall 10,12 is mounted on a plinth 18. This is to provide for stability. The preferred securing arrangement is that there is a cylindrical pin 24 extending upwardly from the plinth 18 and which is located in a first hole 28 in the lower region 38 of each end wall 10,12. In addition, there is a headed pin 26 extending upwardly from the plinth 18 and which locates in a second hole 30 in the lower region 38 of the end walls 10,12. A fastener 40 extends from the inner 10 surface of the end walls 10,12 and engages under the head 44 of headed pin 26.
In this way once the plinth 18 is attached to the lower region 38 of the end walls 10,12 into securing position.
As can be seen from Figures 2 and 5, advantageously a similar securing system is used to secure the bases 14 and rear walls 16 to the end walls 10,12. In i: '5 each instance a pin 24' is provided as is a headed pin 26'. These locate in appropriate holes in the ends of bases 14 and rear walls 16 with fasteners 40' being used to secure the headed pins 26'. In this way, once the entire media storage and display system is assembled, it is relatively rigid and secure.
As is clear from Figure 6, it is possible to stack the media storage and display system, In this particular instance a second media storage and display system is mounted on top of a first identical system with the exception that the one on top does not have a plinth 18. In this way the pins 24,26 are secured in ii 00 0000 I I 49*1 I I sit 9104 appropriate holes 28' in the top of the lower system and locate in the holes 28,30 in the upper system. With the inherent strength and rigidity of the system, it is possible to stack them a number of such systems high.
Furthermore, by virtue of the relatively flush end wall configuration, it is possible to arrange them in long arrays such that, eventually, if one so wished, one could cover an entire wall with these systems.
The systems can be made of any suitable materials such as, for example, plastics, metal, or timber. They may be made in anrty size or length.
Whilst there has been described in the foregoing description a preferred construction of a media storage and display system incorporating the principal features of the present invention, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that many variations or modifications in details of design or construction may be made without departing from the essential features of the present invention, as will be understood from a fair reading of the foregoing description.
