I
a ral ra Address for Service: Invention Title: SHELSTON WATERS Clarence Street SYDNEY NSW 2000 "A VEHICLE COVER" Details of Associated Provisional Application No: PK5986 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us:vehicles particularly hail-resistant covers for vehicles.
The invention has been developed primarily for use as a hail-resistant cover for motor vehicles and motor cycles and will be described hereinafter with reference to these applications. However, it will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to this particular field of use.
Prior art covers have essentially been for the purpose of minimising dust collection on vehicles and have never seriously addressed the problem of protection *e .q of vehicles from hail damage. Existing covers are light and flimsy and merely designed to drape over the Svehicles. The prior art covers that have attempted to minimise hail damage have been necessarily bulky and difficult to store in the boot of a motor vehicle or r appropriate compartment of a motor cycle and difficult to quickly fit to a vehicle.
C
It is an object of the present invention to ameliorate at least some of the deficiencies or the prior C, art.
According to the invention there is provided a cover for a vehicle including a hail-resistant layer having a peripheral skirt depending therefrom, wherein the layer is positioned over a substantial portion of the vehicle and the peripheral skirt hangs over the I I
V

C
o uo 4 4 remainder of the vehicle.
In a preferred embodiment, the skirt covers a substantial portion of the sides, and rear and front ends of the vehicle and the layer covers the hood, roof, windows and boot of a vehicle.
In yet a further preferred embodiment the vehicle is a motor cycle or bicycle. In this preferred embodiment, the skirt covers a substantial portion of the sides, rear and front ends and engine of the motor cycle and the layer covers the handle bars, engine and seat.
More preferably, a bottom-periphery of the skirt is elasticised.
Most preferably, the layer is padded and quilted.
In yet a further the embodiment the skirt is also padded.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cover according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the cover of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the cover of Fig. i.
Fig. 4 is a front or rear view of the cover of Fig.
1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover of Fig. i.
The cover 10 comprises a padded and quilted top layer 11, which is designed to cover a substantial portion of the hood, roof, windows and boot of a car and C 71i 4 protect same from hail damage, and a peripheral skirt 12 depending from the layer 11. The skirt 12 is designed to protect the remaining vehicle chassis from dirt and dust with exception of the wheels (not shown) and provide a firm fit at the lowermost corners of the chassis by elastication 13.
The cover 10 may be secured to the vehicle by understraps 14 which extend under the chassis and are secured on either side of the skirt 12.
It is envisaged that the padding may be conventional foam, rubber or other suitable padding and quilted in a conventional manner. The outer surface 16 of the layer may be of any water resistant material and the skirt may also be of water resistant material.
Preferably the skirt material is stretchable. The dimensions and specifications of the cover are preferably specific to the make and dimensions of the vehicle.
Although the invention has been described with reference to specific examples, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be S: embodied in many other forms. For example, it is envisioned that padded and quilted covers may be made to slip over surf skis, surfboards, jet skis and golf bags.
