Michael Brian Alchin Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Locking Device for Sliding Sash The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5845/12 LOCKING DEVICE FOR SLIDING SASH Field of the Invention This invention pertains to locking devices and more particularly to a locking device for a sliding sash.
Object of the Invention The object of the invention is to provide a locking device which is adaptable to sliding sash windows.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a locking device comprising: a body having a handle portion to be gripped by a user, means to mount the body on a supporting member so that said handle is pivotable about an axis, engaging means fixed with respect to said handle so as to move therewith, said engaging means being movable between a first position to engage an object to secure said object to said member, and a release position; and key operable means mounted in said body and including a movable member, said member being movable by operation of a key between a first position permitting movement of said handle portion and therefore movement of said engaging means to said release position, and a second 20 position preventing movement of said handle portion and retaining said engaging means in its engaging position.
S: F.Brief Description of the Drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the locking device of the present invention with a lock cylinder mounted in the recess.
25 Fig. 2 is a cross section of the locking device of the present invention.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the locking device of the present invention, also depicting a sliding sash and jamb which are interlocked S"by the device.
30 Best Mode and Other Embodiments of the Present Invention shown in Fig. 1, the locking device 10 of the present invention comprises a handle-like body 11 which includes a projecting shelf-like grip portion 12. The grip portion 12 is supported along one edge by a generally concave face portion 13. Projecting from the face portion 13 an enlarged boss 14 is adapted to receive a lock cylinder 15. The rear underside of the body is characterised by an integral bead 16 which is attached to the body by a short rib 17. The longitudinal bead and rib extend at least partially and preferably the full length of the device so as to form a portion of a pivot. The front portion 18 of the device is 1/942t -2characterised by a tooth-like projection 19 which extends at least partially and preferably the length of the device. A stop 20 projects downward from the body of the device and is located between the bead and the tooth-like projection 19.
As shown in Fig. 2, the body of the device, which is preferably formed as a single integral unit, includes a bore or recess 21 which is roughly perpendicular to the underside and adapted to receive a lock cylinder 15. An elongated slot 22 is formed below the recess 21. The axis of the slot 22 is perpendicular to the axis of the recess 21 so that the lock cylinder which is eventually installed in the recess 21 can activate a sliding tang 23 which is provided within the body 11. The slidiig tang 23 is movable from an "open" position in which it is completely contained in the slot and therefore in the body of the device, to a second or locked position in which a portion of the tang extends 15 beyond the rear face 24 of the body of the device. It should be oi understood that any of a variety of lock cylinders may be utilised in conjunction with the locking device of the present invention so long as they can fit into the recess 21 and are capable of cooperating with the sliding tang 23 in the conventional fashion.
As shown in Fig. 3, the bead 16 Is engageable with a cylindrical groove 27 which is formed in a sliding sash 28. The sash is adapted to retain a pane of glass 29. When the sash is closed, its forward portion abuts a chamfered edge 31 of an adjacent jamb 32. As the sash 28 is slid toward the jamb 32 the tooth 19 which projects from the locking 25 device rides up and over the chamfered edge 31 of the jamb. As shown in Fig. 3, the flat rear portion 33 of the tooth 19 is kept by the chamfered edge 31, which prevents the sash from being opened. To re-open the sash, the lock cylinder 15 which is within the recess 21 is activated to retract the tang 23. When the tang 23 is retracted or in the "open" position, the locking device 10 can be rotated ablout the pivotal engagement 16, 27, in the direction of the arrow 34, thus disengaging the tooth 19 from the chamfered projection 31. When the tang 23 is advanced by the lock cylinder 15, it abuts an upright ledge 35 on the sash. This .prevents-the locking device 10 from being rotated, thus prevents the tooth 19 from disengaging the chamfered edge 31. A resilient bias 36, such as a coil spring, may be interposed between the upright ledge 35 and the locking device 10, in effect biasing the locking device 10 toward the closed position. The optional stop 20 abuts the marginal edge of the LMM/942t -3sash 28, for the purpose of preventing over-rotating the locking device toward the jamb.
While the invention has been described with reference to particular materials and techniques of construction, it will be understood that these are provided by way of example and not as a limitation to the scope of the invention. In particular, the body 11 may be provided without the lock cylinder or tang, which items may be supplied by the user or subsequent seller.
