De Veken 3 1716 KE Opmeer THE NETHERLANDS Johannes Alfred Beele Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Vehicle/Vessel The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of oerforming it known to me/us:- 5845/3
VEHICLE/VESSEL
The invention relates to a vehicle/vessel having at least one compartment for containing a material therein, in particular a material which must be maintained at a temperature which is higher than an ambient temperature.
Such a vehicle/vessel is generally known. The disadvantage of known vehicles/vessels (ships) having internal compartments for transporting therein in particular chemicals, which must be maintained at a certain '"mperature, e.g. 200°C, in said compartment, is that precisely because the internal compartments have a fixed (mechanical) connection to the ship's side, said ship's side and the compartment walls may be s, 'ected to enormous material stresses. Indeed, if the chemicals have a temperature of e.g. 200 0 °C and the water surrounding the vessel has a temperature of e.g. 10°C, there is a temperature fall of as much as 190 0 C. The above material stresses lead to cracks in the ship's side and the compartment walls.
In order to overcome the above drawback it has already been proposed to fix the compartments to the deck instead of to the ship's side. In practice this solution did not appear to be satisfactory, since material stresses are produced in the deck after all, as a result of the difference in temperature between the deck which is in communication with the surrounding air and the compartments, with all its adverse effects (ccacks).
The object of the invention is to provide a vehicle/vessel having at least one compartment which is particularly suitable for transporting therein a material which must be maintained at a higher temperature than an ambient temperature, whereby the material stresses In the vehicle/vessel as a result of temperature differences remain at an acceptable level.
There is disclosed herein a vehicle/vessel having at least one compartment for transporting a material therein, said material being one which is to be maintained at a predetermined temperature which is higher than an ambient temperature, and further having at least one thermally insulating support for freely supporting, in an at least substantially thermally insulating manner, said at least one compartment with respect to other parts of said vehicle/vessel leaving a space between the walls of said at least one compartment and the walls of the vehicle/vessel, wherein said at least one thermally insulating support includes: STA/03891 3 a) upper means for immediately underlying arnd supporting said at least one compartment, said upper means having a coeffi.ient of friction which is low enough whereby said at least one compartment can move across said upper means; b) intermediate means disposed below said upper means, said intermediate means being compressible under loading of said at least one compartment and having thermally insulating and pressure-distributing properties under said loading; c) lower means disposed below said intermediate means, said lower means having thermally insulating properties; and d) a holder in which the upper, intermediate and lower means are at least partially contained.
There is further disclosed herein a thermal insulating support for use in a vehicle/vessel having at least one compartment for transporting a material therein, said material being one which is to be maintained at a temperature which is higher than an ambient temperature, said support being provided for freely supporting, In an at least substantially thermally insulating manner, said at least one compartment with respect to other parts of said vehicle/vessel to leave a space between the walls of said at least one compartment and the walls of the vehicle/vessel, said support comprising: a) upper means for immediately underlying and supporting said at least one compartment, said upper means having a coefficient of friction w25 ich is low enough whereby said at least one compartment can move across 25 said upper means; e• Sb) intermediate means disposed below said upper means, said intermediate means being compressible under loading of said at least one compartment and having thermally insulating and pressure-dlstributing properties under said loading; c) lower means disposed below said intermediate means, said lower means having thermally insulating properties; and d) a holder for at least partially containing said upper, intermediate and lower means.
Typically, said upper means are thermally resistant to the higher 35 temperature at which the material is to be maintained, and said upper means are mechanically capable of sustaining the weight load of said at least one compartment.
STA/03891 -4 Preferably, the upper means is constructed of a material having the following properties: 1) tensile strength: 40 N/mm 2 at 190°C ii) flexural modulus: 3300 N/mm 2 iii) impact strength: >36 Nm iv) heat deflection temperature: 200 0 C at 1.82 N/mm 2 Preferably, the intermediate means is comprised of a mat of silicone rubber.
Preferably said rubber is a vinyl silicone polymer compound.
Advantageously, the lower means is constructed of ethylene propylene terpolymer having no double compounds in the main chain.
Typically, the holder includes a bottom underlying said lower means and sides laterally containing said intermediate and upper means with the upper means extending above said sides.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal diagrammatic section of a thermally insulating support of a vehicle/vessel according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a cross-section thereof; and Figure 3 shows a perspective view thereof.
Figure 1 shows a thermally insulating support 1 provided with upper means 2 having a low coefficient of friction, in order to make it possible for a bottom wall of compartments of a vehicle/vessel according to the invention supported on a lower support 3 to slide thereover.
The construction of said upper means 2, as regards their composition, is such that said upper means can amply stand up to a temperature of e.g.
200°C being the temperature at which asphalt is to be maintained during transport and the weight of the compartments (app. 40 tons). The upper means 2 are preferably made of a material which is known by the name of "ULTEM Polyetherimide Resin". This specific material has e.g. the following properties: tensile strength: 40 N/mm 2 at 190°C; flexural modulus: 3300 N/im 2 impact strength: 36 Nm; heat deflection temperature: 200'C at 1.82 N/mm 2 :*Furthermore intermediate means 5 are provided, said intermeoiate S 35 means being compressible and having thermally insulating and pressure-distributing properties. The intermediate means 5 are in this case e.g. a mat of silicone rubber a vinyl methyl silicone polymer STA/03891 compounded at an optimum resistance to ageing). Additionally lower means 6 having thermally insulating properties are present, e.g. EPDM-rubber an ethylene propylene terpolymer having no double compounds in the main chain, as a result of which a great temperature resistance and a great cohesion are obtained). The whole is contained in a metal holder 7 with upright walls 8, so that a high weight loads the rubbers do not bulge out laterally.
In Figures 2 and 3 corresponding parts have been given the same reference numerals.
