[32] Application Date 15 October 1991 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815/3 IL -2 WINDOW LOCK FIELD OF THE INVENTION The following invention relates to window locks and more particularly, though not exclusively to a locking device adapted to be mounted over a latch of a sliding sash window to selectively prevent unlatching thereof.
PRIOR ART Known sliding sash windows often comprise a latch mechanism mounted to the window frame. Such a mechanism is typically spring loaded or otherwise biased into a window-latched position however it may be simply unlatched without the need for any form of key operated unlocking.
Accordingly, a security problem exists.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION There is disclosed herein a locking mechanism comprising; a cradle to be mounted to a window or door jamb, surround or the like so as to bridge a frame mounted latch mechanism, a carriage disposed within the cradle and adapted to slide along an axis, a lock barrel disposed within the carriage, a tongue cooperating with the lock barrel and adapted to slide in a direction transverse of said axis so as to selectively prevent sliding of the carriage by interaction with the cradle so as to render the carriage in such a position that the frame mounted latch mechanism may not be actuated.
Preferably, the carriage is spring biased relative to the cradle.
Preferably, the tongue is spring biased to the carriage.
Preferably, the lock barrel comprises an eccentric protrusion extending longitudinally therefrom, the protrusion being adapted to cooperate with a recess in the tongue so as to effect lateral transfer of the tongue upon rotation of the lock barrel.
Preferably, the cradle comprises a number of steps with which the tongue cooperates to prevent sliding of the carriage.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, RLF/29041 -3wherein: Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of a locking mechanism, Fig. 2 is a schematic plan view of a cradle forming part of the locking mechanism of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a schematic cross-sectional side elevational view of the cradle of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a schematic end elevational view of the cradle of Figs. 2 and 3, Fig. 5 is a schematic elevational view of a carriage forming part of the mechanism of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a schematic plan view of the carriage of Fig. Fig. 7 is a schematic plan view of a tongue forming part of the mechanism of Fig. 1, Fig. 8 is a schematic elevational view of the tongue of Fig. 7, Fig. 9 is a schematic elevational view of a lock barrel forming part of the mechanism of Fig. 1, Fig. 10 is a schematic plan view of the lock barrel of Fig. 9, and Fig. 11 is a schematic cross sectional plan view of the locking mechanism of Figs. 1 to 10 in position on a window frame.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a locking mechanism 10. Mechanism 10 comprises a cradle 11 to be mounted by way of threaded fasteners through holes 21 to a window jamb or surround 50 or the like. Cradle 11 defines a cavity 15 to accommodate a window frame 40 mounted latch mechanism 30. That is, cradle 11 will essentially cover a standard all purpose design latch mechanism mounted to the window frame 40. 1 Mechanism 10 further comprises a carriage 12 slidably mounted within a housing portion 22 of cradle 11. Rotatably mounted within carriage 12 is a lock barrel 13 comprising a key slot 17. Lock barrel 17 further comprises an eccentrically mounted protrusion 16 as best depicted in Fig. 9. The function of protrusion 16 will be described below.
Carriage 12 further comprises a slide protrusion 20 under which a spring 19 is located to bias carriage 12 upward relative to housing portion 22.
Mechanism 10 further comprises a tongue 14 depicted in Figs 7 and 8.
Tongue 14 is to be mounted within the housing portion 22 below lock barrel 13 and is adapted to slide laterally relative to the main axis RLF/29041 -4 thereof. Tongue 14 comprises a slot 25 into which a spring 18 is received. Spring 18 serves to bias tongue 14 laterally against the inside wall of housing portion 22. Tongue 14 also comprises a recess 23 into which protrusion 16 of lock barrel 13 is located. It should be appreciated here that upon rotation of lock barrel 13, protrusion 16 will rotate and thus cooperate with recess 23 to move tongue 14 laterally. In its rest position, tongue 14 will be biased by spring 18 so that extension 24 will cooperate with and latch against steps (not shown) located within housing portion 22 of cradle 11. Two such steps would typically be provided, one defining the upper location of carriage 12, o and the other defining a lower locked position of carriage 12.
In use, the carriage 12 may simply be depressed so as to latch a extension 24 under the step defining the locked position of the carriage. Alternatively, a key may be used to rotate lock barrel 13 to thus retract extension 24 of tongue 14 from the upper step (not shown).
In the locked position, the lower end of carriage 12 will engage with and/or prevent access to the latch mechanism located within cavity 15 To unlock the mechanism 10, a key is used to rotate lock barrel 13 as a result of which protrusion 16 engages with tongue 14 to retract extension 24 from engagement with the lower step in cavity 22. Spring 19 will then bias carriage 12 to its upper position thus unlocking the latch mechanism.
It should be appreciated that modifications and alterations obvious to those skilled in the art are not to be considered as beyond the scope of the present invention. For example, carriage 12 may interact directly with a leveral catch mechanism provided on the standard latch device located within cavity RLF/29041
