Claims (15)

1. A knife comprising: a cutting blade provided with a cutting edge; a body for receiving said cutting blade; and, a head having a planar face for slidably bearing against a surface, and a slot located adjacent the planar face for having said cutting blade protruding therethrough, said slot and said planar face being relatively disposed so that a corner is formed between a portion of said cutting blade which contains said cutting edge and said planar face, said planar face and said slot being further arranged so that when an edge of said surface is received in said corner, said planar face can apply pressure to a sheet material lying on said surface at a location adjacent said edge and dispose said cutting blade at an acute angle to said edge, whereby, in use, by running said knife along said surface with said edge received in said corner said cutting 20 edge can closely cut said sheet material at said edge of said surface. oe.
2. A knife according to claim 1, in which the head is provided with a wedge shaped surface located between the slot and the planar face for elevating the cutting blade 25 with respect to the surface, 00 whereby, in use, when the planar face bears against said surface the cutting blade is disposed at an angle in two orthogonal planes with respect to the surface.
3. A knife according to claim 2, in which the wedge 0e 30 shaped surface has an angle of about 160 to the slot measured transversely of the slot and the planar face has an angle of about 300 to the slot measured longitudinally _of the slot. 10
4. A knife according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the head comprises a second planar face of opposite disposition to said planar face with respect to the slot, said planar faces located at the same end of the body, whereby, in use, the respective planar faces when bearing against the surface dispose the cutting blade for cutting the sheet material in opposite directions along the edge of the surface.
A knife according to any one of claims 1 to 3, further comprising a second head, said second head having a second planar face for slidably bearing against said surface and a second slot located adjacent said second planar face for having an opposite end of said cutting blade protruding therethrough, said second slot and said second planar face being relatively disposed so that a second corner is formed between a second portion of said cutting blade which contains said cutting edge and said second planar face, wherein one head is located at each end of said body and each planar face is on the same side of 20 said knife, whereby, in use, with said edge received in respective ones of said corners, said cutting edge can cut sheet material in opposite directions along said edge of said surface.
6. A knife holder for receiving a conventional knife 25 having a propelling type cutting blade, provided with a cutting edge, the knife holder comprising: a body for receiving the conventional knife; and, a head having a planar face for slidably bearing against a surface, and a slot located adjacent the planar face for having the cutting blade protruding therethrough, said slot and said planar face being relatively disposed so that when a cutting blade is protruding A therethrough, a corner is formed between a portion of the 11 cutting blade which contains said cutting edge and said planar face, said planar face and said slot being further arranged so that when an edge of said surface is received in said corner, said planar face can apply pressure to a sheet material lying on said surface at a location adjacent an edge of said surface and dispose said cutting blade at an acute angle to said edge whereby, in use, by running said knife along said surface with said edge received in said corner, said cutting blade can closely cut said sheet material at said edge of said surface.
7. A knife holder according to claim 6, also having a longitudinally disposed recess of complementary shape to the body of the conventional knife, the recess terminating at one end at the slot.
8. A knife holder according to claim 6, wherein said head includes a second planar face formed symmetrically with said planar face about said slot, said second planar face being slidably bearable against said surface, whereby 20 said second planar face can apply pressure to said sheet material at said location and dispose the cutting blade at a second acute angle to the edge so that said cutting edge can closely cut material at the edge of said surface in a .direction opposite to said one direction. S: 25
9. A knife holder according to claim 6 in which the :head is provided with a wedge shaped surface located S":".between the slot and the planar face for elevating the cutting blade with respect to the surface, whereby, in use, when the planar face bears against the surface the cutting S 30 blade is disposed at an angle in two orthogonal planes with om respect to the surface.
A knife holder according to claim 8, wherein the In head is provided with first and second wedge shaped 12 surfaces located between the slot and the planar face, and the slot and the second planar face, respectively, each wedge shaped surface arranged to elevate the cutting blade with respect to the surface whereby, in use, when the planar face or second planar face bears against the surface the cutting blade is disposed at an angle in two orthogonal planes with respect to the surface.
11. A method of custom tailoring sheet material to a template using a knife according to any one of claims 1 to 5, the method comprising the steps of: bearing the planar face against the sheet material to force the sheet material against the template; disposing the blade so that its edge contacts an edge of the template to cut the sheet material thereat; and, manoeuvring the blade about an edge of the template to cut the sheet material to the template.
12. A method of custom tailoring sheet material to a template using a knife holder according to any one of 20 claims 6 to 10, the method comprising the steps of: o• inserting a conventional knife into the body of I:...said knife holder; bearing the face against the sheet material to force the sheet material against the template; disposing the blade so that its edge contacts an edge of the template to cut the sheet material thereat; 4*° and, manoeuvring the blade about an edge of the S: template to cut the sheet material to the template. S 30
13. A knife substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in any one of the accompanying drawings. 0 13
14. A knife holder for receiving a conventional knife having a propelling type cutting blade, substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in any one of the accompanying drawings.
15. A method according to claim 9 or 12 substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in any one of the accompanying drawings. Dated this 9th day of September, 1993.
