p* Invention Title "JOINTING
MEMBERS"
OF STRUCTURAL Details of Associated Provisional Application Number PK 7632 Dated, 7th August 1991 The following statement is a full description of the invention including the best method of performing it known to me.
2 THIS INVENTION relates to the jointing of structural members.
AU-B-45949/89 (602119) (El Barador Holings Pty Ltd) discloses a floor frame assembly where a lateral beam or joist is connected to an I-beam, assembled from a pair of C-section beams back-to-back.
The lateral beam or joist is of substantially Z-section and its side flanges are received between, and bolted to, the flange members of the>I-beam.
While the system has proved effective, it has proved to have a number of disadvantages.
As the tops of the I-beams and the lateral beams or joists in a floor are not co-planar (but are vertically offset by the thickness of the top flange 15 members of the I-beams), the floor panels laid over the beams or joists are deformed where they cross the Ibeams and/or are liable to flex and squeak when walked upon if not correctly fixed to the joists.
In addition, there is no positive location of 20 the oists relative to the I-beams while the beams and *00 joists are being fixed together.
It is an object of the present invention to provide structural members where their top surfaces are co-planar at a joint.
It is a preferred object to provide a joint where the fasteners are recessed.
It is a further preferred object to provide a joint where the structural members are positively located (and aligned) prior to fixirig.
Other preferred objects will become apparent from the following description.
In one aspect, the present invention resides in a joint for structural members including: a C-section beam having a web member interconnecting a pair of substantially parallel flange members directed to one side of the web member, with aligned pairs of holes, surrounded by inwardly-directed protuberances, in the flange members; a lateral beam or joist having a web interconnecting substantially parallel side flanges, each side flange having an end portion spaced inwardly, but parallel to, the adjacent portion of the side flange, and a longitudinal recess in the end portion extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the beam or joist and centrally of the end portion; so arranged that when the lateral beam or joist is engaged between the flange members of the Csection beam, the flange members and side flanges are substantially co-planar and the protuberances in the flange members are received within respective longitudinal recesses in the end portions.
Fastener means are engaged in the holes and in aligned holes in the longitudinal recesses (or in holes formed by the fasteners in the longitudinal recesses) to interconnect the flange members and side flanges.
In a second aspect, the C-section beam is substituted by an I-beam and the lateral beam or joist is engaged with, and connected to, a pair of parallel flange members /long one side of the beam. (A second 25 lateral beam o joist may be connected to the flange members on the\other side of the web member.) In a third aspect, the C-section beam may be substituted by an i~section beam assembled from two Csection beams back-to-back, the lateral beam or joist 30 being engaged with, and connected to, the flange members of one of the C-section beams.
The lateral beam or joist may be of Z- (or modified or or C-section. (The lateral beam or joist may also be of rolled hollow section (RHS).) ie. 35 Preferably, the depth of the end portions below the adjacent portions of the side flanges is equal to, or slightly greater than, the thickness of the flange members.
Preferably, the end portions, including the longitudinal recesses, are press-formed in the side flanges.
To enable the invention to be fully understood, a preferred embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: t0 FIG 1 is a perspective view of a joint between -a C-section beam and a modified Z-section joist in accordance with the invention; and FIG 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of FIG 1.
The C-section beam 10 has a web member 11 interconnecting parallel top and bottom flange members 12, 13.0 Holes 14 are provided at modular spacings along the flange members 12, 13. Intermediate each pair of holes 14, holes 15, surrounded by inwardly-directed protuberances 16, are provided at modular spacings along the flange members.
The joist 20 is of modified Z-section with a web 21 interconnecting top and bottom side flanges 22, 23 (with respective edge flanges 24, 25). At each end 25 of the joist, the side flanges 22, 23 have end portions 22a, 23a which are recessed, but parallel to, the adjacent portions of the top and bottom side flanges 22, 23, the depth of the recesses being equal to, or jdst greater than, the thickness of the flange member 12, 30 13 of the C-section beam 10. A longitudinal recess\26, S 27 is provided centrally along each end portion 22a, 2 a parallel to the web 21 (and longitudinal axis of tiie joist).
•While the joist 20 may be engaged between the 35 flange members 12, 13 of the C-section beam 10 by L 1, t insertion with the web 21 perpendicular thereto, an alternative method is preferred.
The joist 20 is inclined (ie. with the web 21, eg. at 15-30° from the vertical) and it is inserted between the flange members 12, 13 with the longitudinal recess 27 aligned with the protuberance 16 in the bottom flange member 13. The joist 20 is then "rolled" to bring the web 21 vertical and the installer will hear the protuberance 16 in the top flange member 12 "click" into engagement in the longitudinal recess 26 in the end portion 22a of top side flange 22. The installer now knows that the joist is accurately located between the flange members 12, 13 of the C-section beam Tek-screws 30 (or self-piercing fasteners) are driven through the holes 15 into the metal of the longitudinal recesses 26, 27 to secure the top flange member 12 and top side flange 22, and the bottom flange member 13 and the bottom flange 23, together. (Aligned holes may be provided in the longitudinal recesses 26, 27 to enable bolts to secure the C-section beam 10 and joist 20 together.) It will be readily apparent to the skilled addressee that the top flange member 12 and top side flange 22 (and bottom flange member 13 and bottom side 25 flange 23) are co-planar, and as the heads of the Tekscrews 30 are received in the protuberances 16, any floor or like panels laid on the beam 10 and joist will not be distorted, but will be in full contact therewith.
30 The joist 20 is preferably roll-formed and then the end portions 22a, 23a and longitudinal recesses 26, 27 applied in a press.
i 6 The skilled addressee will appreciate that the invention is appropriate to the alternative sections for the beam and joist discussed above.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiments described and illustrated without departing from the scope of the present invention defined in the appended claims.
