14599/78-L .Printed h C TOoN. Comonwealth rment Pnte-. .J -1- Title of Invention Innovated Chair Description This invention relates to a chair with a built in system to hold and support food and drink containers, as well as telephones, small computers, reading and writing material, TV channel control, newspapers and the like; its a chair-table combination and suitable for an indoor and outdoor location.
The mechanics of the build in system relate to a number of trays (called platforms in the provisional description), some of which are fixed along the sides of the chair and others which can pivot around the upper portion of the front legs or, extentions built in to the chair to contain the rotating assemblies.
These rotating trays have various size holes to locate and hold drink containers, food plates using adapters where necessary and other items mentioned earlier.
The chair as well as its innovations can be made out of wood, metal, plastic or a combination of all three.
For the purpose of having a meal from the chair, it can be set up with the required food and drink by the intending occupant, after which he or she Scan sit down and position the trays to their satisfaction. There is room for the top tray to be positioned over the knees of the occupant and restrained in that cross chair position.
The rotating trays can be parked under the arm rests with the adapters removed.
1 -2- The fixed trays along the sides of the chair at seat level or below, if there are more than one layer, have side panels to contain the placed articles.
This invention, as well as being a useful acquisition in the normal household, indoors or outdoors, pool side or court side, can be of practical value in old people's or retired people's homes.
Accordingly the invention provides an armchair comprising a seat member, a back member and at least one arm member disposed at a level above and substantially parallel to said seat member so as to provide an open space between said seat member and said arm member wherein said arm member is provided to with one or a plurality of rotatable tray assemblies pivotally mounted to the end of said arm member and adapted for rotation in planes below the said arm member and parallel thereto so as to be adapted to fold away underneath said arm member when not in use.
i *r .o 1. 1 i i -3- Drawing Description Fig I shows an example of the innovated chair with the back and seat cushions along with their supports omitted, and showing one moveable tray assembly and two fixed trays.
Fig 2 shows the moveable tray assembly in section, and consists of a sleeve fitted with clearance on the rounded upper portion of the front leg (4) of the chair, and pin keyed (16) to the fixed tray to prevent rotating with the tray movement, but free to move up and down.
The trays are free to rotate on the upper smaller diameter of the sleeve (15) to prevent rotation, but can move up and down. This allows the movement of one tray being isolated from the one above or below. The whole assembly sandwich is under pressure between the fixed tray and the arm rest (23) using a resiliant type material block or coil spring (17) to take care of wear and tear and sagging of the trays.
A spacer (24) makes contact with the under surface of the arm rest (23) and its upper surface is above the top of the spacer (15) to allow the spring action of (17) to put pressure on the assembly.
Also in Fig 2 a dinner plate (21) and a teacup and saucer (22) are located on the top tray using adapters (11) and (12) to contain them, and two common type drink containers (13) and (14) are located and contained on trays and these two trays and can move together when necessary with the use of a fixed or removeable pin SFig 3 shows the metal restraint (18) which restrains the top tray in the cross chair position; a rounded extention on the top tray is contained in the bottom loop of the restraint.
The two fixed trays and are for the placement of various items and have side panels (10) to help to contain the placed articles as shown in Fig 1 and Fig 2.
