Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT IMPACT CUSHIONING DEVICE FOR HAND TOOLS The invention is described in the following statement: IMPACT CUSHIONING DEVICE This invention relates to improvements in devices for impact cushioning of Spades and Shovels.
For many people whilst carrying out gardening and other digging or other ground working activities injury or discomfort can occur when a relatively hard object has been hit with the blade of the shovel or spade.
A previous impact cushioning device had been designed by the use of a complicated double spring and rod system supported by three bearing portions This would have the disadvantage of a relative short travel spring design which would be considerably hard to operate and could therefore provide only minimal protection on any impact.
.15 This problem is overcome by this invention, which provides a single long spring system held in place by two positioning plates .These are installed in an inner and outer tube, which are allowed to slide freely within each other. The other :.form of this invention is the use of a guiding crevices within the inner tube providing maximum free movement of the inner and outer tube during an impact but also preventing the turning of the inner tube within the outer tube The handle of the spade or shovel is directly fastened to the inner tube were as the blade is directly mounted to the outer tube All the components of the device are made of steel S.i To assist with the understanding of the principle of the invention reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one example of the invention.
In the drawings FIGURE 1 shows the application of the impact cushioning device in a spade.
FIGURE 2 shows the example of an impact cushioning device in accordance to its invention.
Referring to Figure 2 it can be seen that the impact cushioning device according to its invention comprises of a inner tube 3 comprises of a outer tube 1) Both these tubes have a positioning plate 5 installed at they relevant position. The cushioning spring 4 is installed between these two positioning plates The two tubes are held 10 together by two rivets 2 installed at 180 degree directly opposite to each other. The inner portion of these rivets are installed in the crevices (6 of the inner tube. This allows the inner tube free movement up or down within the outer tube but prevents the inner tube from turning within the outer tube.
It can be realized that this device is not only restricted to the use for shovels or spades but a verity of application could be found such as crutches, walking sticks etc.

Claims (9)

1. An impact cushioning device comprising of an outer tube and an inner tube being arranged for axial movements to each other held together by the means of two sliding rivets, a positioning plate attached to its relevant position within the inner tube a positioning plate attached to its relevant position within the outer tube an impact cushion means operating between the attached positioning plates resisting partial axial impact force and distributing any impact force by the relative compression of the the impact cushion means thus resulting in the relative movements of the inner and outer tube.
2. An impact cushioning device according to claim 1, wherein the impact cushioning device comprises of a single compression spring.
An impact cushioning device according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the inner and outer tube are connected to allow axial movement with respect to each other.
4. An impact cushioning device according to claim 3, wherein the inner and outer tube are of tubular construction.
5. An impact cushioning device according to any of the preceding claims comprising of restrictive means for prohibitive rotation of the inner tube in respect to the outer tube.
6. An impact cushioning device according to claim 5, wherein the restrictive means compromises two axial longitudinal crevices located directly opposite each other within the inner tube. 4
7. An impact cushioning device according to claim 1 wherein the positioning plates are fixed to facilitate support and compression to the impact cushioning device
8. An shovel or spade tool incorporating a impact cushioning device according to any of claims 1 to 7
9. An impact cushioning device as herein described extensively with reference to the accompanying drawings impact cushioning device as herein described substantially with reference to the accompanying drawings Dated this twenty-third day of April 1998 WALTER NICHOLL Applicant fS S *le
