Invention Title: "Attachmea 4 t for Angle Grinder" Details of Associated Provisional Application: No: The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to Me:
-J
2 The present invention relates to a cutter attachment for a hand-held cutting tool, and has particular relevance for use with an angle grinder.
Hand-held cutting tools are generally large and cumbersome tools which are difficult to use at most on-site locations unless a work-shop of some sort is available. Cutting with these tools therefore tends to be difficult, and sometimes dangerous, unless the material is cut before being placed on-site, or is removed from on-site to be cut in the workshop. Thus, the use of these tools is somewhat inflexible, and is usually restricted to only a few situations when away from the workshop.
Soo The aim of the present invention is to provide a cutter attachment for a hand-held cutting tool which overcomes, or at least partly alleviates, the above difficulties.
*09 The present invention provides a cutter attachment for a hand-held cutting tool having a cutting element capable of rotation about a major axis, said cutter attachment comprising: a pivotable support comprising a pivotal arm 20 and a base, wherein the pivotal arm includes a cutting tool attachment means capable of releasably attaching the cutter attachment to the cutting tool; and the base includes an adjustable clamping means; whereby the pivotal arm is secured to the base so as to be capable of pivotal movement about an axis parallel to said major axis when the cutting tool is secured to the cutter attachment, such that the cutting element may be guided from a first position away from a work-piece held by the clamping means, to a second position in engagement with the work-piece, to effect cutting of the work-piece.
~I
I 3 In a preferred form of the invention the pivotal arm of the support also includes an adjustable slide. Preferably, the adjustable slide includes an elongate guide member which is capable of engaging a running member to allow relative sliding movement therebetween in a direction perpendicular to the major axis of the cutting tool. The elongate guide member may be integral with the attachment means, and the running member may be integral with the pivotal arm. Thus, the reiative movement will be between the cutting element and doesn't follow the work-piece.
a a« o 000 0 oo o O0 9 0 11 90 0 15 D 0 o o 0 The relative movement is preferably controlled by a rotatable threaded shaft fixed to the guide member. The threaded shaft preferably engages a correspondingly threaded nut fixed to the running member, and is operable by a handle or the like at one end thereof.
o 0 o 4 0e 0 99 t The use of such an adjustable slide is highly preferred as it allows variation of the length of cut on the work-piece.
The depth of the cut is dictated by the radius of the cutting element, and is thus not a variable which can be altered by the cutter attachment of the present invention.
However, the length of the cut is determined by the position of the work-piece within the projected diameter of the cutting element. Thus, a short cut will be provided if the work-piece is located near the leading or trailing edge of the cutting element, whereas a long cut will be provided If the work-piece is centrally located. This position is adjusted through actuation of the adjustable slide.
In another preferred form, a resilient member is provided between the pivotal arm and the base of the pivotal support. The resilient member is preferably arranged so as to bias the pivotal arm towards the first position. Thus, a force must be applied to the cutting tool to move the cutting element thereof from the first position to the
Q
1 4 second position, while the bias of the resilient member is suitable to return the cutting tool to the first position once the force is removed.
In this form the invention provides that a steady cut may be made by the application of constant pressure to the cutting element via the cutting tool, and support is provided throughout the cut. This can reduce the risk of a bouncy or jerky cut, which is often present with the use of such a large and heavy hand-held hand-tool, especially away from a workshop.
In yet another preferred form of the invention the clamping So means is adjustable to receive work-pieces of varying 0o configuration, and may also allow for alteration of the o 0 angle of alignment of the work-piece with the cutting 15 element to provide for angled cuts.
00 a 0 0 In this form the clamping means may be provided with a clamp body pivotally secured to the base of the support, and adapted to interact with a threaded clamping bar. The clamp body is preferably lockable in any of a number of 20 positions so that the alignment of the work-piece may be secured at positions ranging from parallel to the major axis of the cutting tool (allowing a 90' cut across the work-piece) to angles of possibly up to 80' or 85" to that riajor axis (allowing a 10' or 5* cut across the work-piece.
However, a more practical range of alignment angles for cutter attachment of the present invention is from 0' (parallel) to about The pivotable support may also be provided with a locking means between the base and the pivotal arm. The locking means is preferably pivotally secured at one end thereof i .i the base, and is adjustably secured at or near the other end thereof to the pivotal arm. The locking means allows locking of the pivotal arm at any position between the first and second positions. The use of such a locking means is especially advantageous when the cutter attachment does not include a resilient member as described above.
In order to provide a better understanding of the present invention, a preferred embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. It must be understood that the following description does not restrict the generality of the above description of the invention.
8 In the drawings: 0 0 a 6 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cutter attachment 00 0 I Md according to a preferred embodiment of the present a0 *so 15 invention; 0@ Figure 2 is a side view of the embodiment of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a sectional view along line A-A in the embodiment of Figure 2.
0 20 Illustrated in Figure 1 is a cutter attachment 10 attached to a hand-held cutting tool (shown in outline only) such as Io an angle grinder 12. The angle grinder 12 has a cutting element 14 and an upper protective guara 16. The upper guard 16 includes two slots (not shown) capable of 25 receiving bolt heads for interaction with the wing nutz 18 and slots 20 whtch define the attachment means of the cutter attachment of the invention.
The pivotable support 22 includes a pivotal arm 24 and a base 26. The pivotal arm 24 is pivotally attached to the base 26 at one end thereof, and is secured at the other end thereof to an adjustable slide 28. This feature is better -6illustrated in conjunction with Figure 3, wherein the adjustable slide 28 includes an elongate guide member which is provided by the lower portion of plate 32 (which carries the slots 20 and secures to the upper guard 16 of the angle grinder) with two L-shaped members 34, 36 secured thereto to provide two channels 38, 40. The channels 38, are bound at either end by end-walls 42, 44. A threaded shaft 46 is rotatably secured between the end-walls 42,44 so as to be rotatable by handle 48.
Integral with one end of the pivotal arm 24 is the running member 50 which defines the other part of the adjustable slide 28. The running member 50 is a generally U-shaped 3 omember having outwardly turned flanges 52, 54 at the end of o either arm thereof which are slidably received within channels 38, 40. A nut or threaded aperture 56 is provided o 04 within the running member 50 to receive and engage with the correspondingly threaded shaft 46. Thus, rotation of the o*o threaded shaft 46 causes movement of the guide member therealong.
20 The base 26 is a flat plate having a clamping means 60 at 0 4094a, one end thereof. The clamping means 60 has a clamp body 62 in the form of an inverted L-shaped member, with a bolt 64 received within an aperture therein for engagement with a restrained nut (not shown). Loosening of the bolt 64 allows the clamp body to be caused to rotate about the axis of the bolt 64 to alter the alignment of clamping surface 66. This variation in angle is indicated by the marker 68.
A clamping bar 70 is provided within a threaded aperture in extendable clamping arm 72. As shown in Figure 2, the clamping arm is preferably slightly inclined (about 2" to to the clamping surface 66 in order to provide a tight clamp on a work-piece (shown in Figure 2 as a piece of angle iron 74).
I j 7 The pivotal support 22 is provided with a locking means 76 between the base 26 and the pivotal arm 24. The locking means 76 is an elongate flat member having a centrally located slot 77 for receiving a wing nut 78 secured to a threaded shaft on the pivoted arm 24. The other end of the member is pivotally secured to an upstanding flange secured to one of the support members 82 of the base 26.
The wing nut 78 may be undone to allow movement of the pivotal arm 24 from a first position where the cutting element is raised away from the work-piece, to a second position where the cutting element fully engages the workpiece (as shown in Figure The wing-nut 78 may be tightened to secure the pivotal arm 24 in any desired 0o position.
o0 04 "0 0* 15 It will thus be seen that various benefits are provided by Co utilising the cutter attachment of the present invention, and in particular by utilising various of the features of the present invention. The main benefits are the ability to clamp the cutting tool directly to the work-piece, and an increase in the cutting tool's cutting capacity and quality by incorporation of an adjustable slide.
Therefore, the cutting tool may be bolted to a bench or to another rigid structure making it a versatile tool in the t work-shop or for a home handyman, or the tool may be taken on site where it may clamp directly on to the piece of materie, to be cut. Further, the cut may be perpendicular or Tblique, and duo to the secure clamping and supported cutting the cut is generally of a quality similar to that which would be performed in a work-shop by a larger tool.
The length of the cut may.be varied and is only limited by the length of the adjustable slide relative to the diameter of the cutting element of the cutting tool, and accuracy of I: 8 the cut is readily achieved by insertion of the work-piece within the clamp.
The cutter attachment of the present invention can be rapidly attached or unattached to the cutting tool, and can be carried or stored separately from the cutting tool. The safety of the use of such cutting tools is also increased due to the ability to clamp the tool directly to the material to be cut. This enhances the rigidity of the work-piece in relation to the cutting element, and therefore reduces the likelihood of the fracture or disintegration of the cutting element due to inadvertent movement between that and the work-piece. The cutter *0 attachment of the present invention is preferably made from oo g a light yet strong material such that the weight of the o 15 attachment does not add significantly to the weight of the cutting tool. For example, the cutter attachment may be 0. made of aluminium or other suitable light and suitably 0 strong. metals, or may be made from a suitably strong plastic. It will be understood that any suitable material may be utilised, and indeed the above mentioned materials are simply preferred. The invention is not to be limited 2"to use of only light and strong materials, as it may be that in some instances the weight of the attachment is not important and a heavier material may be used.
It will also be appreciated that various modifications and alterations may be made to the above cutter attachment without departing from the ambit of the present invention.
