Description

.r ;1 623943 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1952 GUY PAUL DEMETNE (Patent Application Number PJ 1509) Br003712 OS/ 1 1/~9 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED:- "A GRILLE ASSEMBLY" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- 2 This invention relates to a grille assembly.
This invention has particular but not exclusive application to security grilles for sealing building apertures, and for illustrative purposes reference will be made to such application. However, it is to be understood that this invention could be used in other applications, such as temporary railings.
Current designs of security grille are usually rigid panels which must be swung open about a hinged edge to permit access through the openings to which they are fitted. This is often inconvenient, particularly where the security grille is fitted in association with a hinged panel door.
Folding grilles using scissor linkages have been utilised as security grilles which may be folded into small 15 spaces beside the apertures to which they are fitted.
Hitherto, however, the use of such folding grilles has been
'C
limited. In order to achieve the desired security, it has
(C
been necessary to construct the grille from heavy materials, and this, together with common design features employed to date, has resulted in such grilles being difficult to open and close.
The present invention aims to alleviate the above disadvantages and to provide a grille which will be reliable and efficient in use. Other objects and advantages of this invention will hereinafter become apparent.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this 3 invention in one aspect resides broadly in a grille assembly including:a plurality of opposed pairs of channel members, each pair of channel members being interconnected by spacing means to define a slot therebetween; link means located through the slots of and interconnecting said pairs of channel members, said link means being located for sliding engagement in the channels of a first pair of channel members and pivotally located relative to a second pair of channel members, and guide means for guiding said pairs of channel members ,between a stowed position in which said pairs of channel r members are disposed substantially adjacent one another and lo, an extended position.
CcrI Preferably, the pairs of channel members are of metal extrusion or rolled metal. Preferably, the link means takes
C
t: the form of a scissor linkage assembly passing through or within the slots. Suitably, the slotted members are formed as hollow prismatic members, such as hollow rectangular members, whereby pivot pins asscciated with the scissor linkage may be retained therein for movement along the members.
The scissor linkage may include link members pivoted to a first grille bar through a linkage pivot and having an end portion adapted for sliding along an adjacent grille bar such that transverse movement of the first grille bar away from the adjacent grille bar may occur. The end portion may be w AA
(J
T/RG
i 4 pivoted or joined to a further link, and the further link may be pivoted in turn to a third grille bar.
The scissor linkage may be formed of material of any desired shape. It is preferred, however, that the links of the scissor linkage be formed from flat bar material such that the thickness of the assembled linkage is minimised, while retaining sufficient strength for security purposes.
The linkage pivots may be formed as riveted connections, or as loose pins retained within the hollow prismatic members by end contact with the internal surfaces thereof. Washers of low-friction material, such as plastics material, may be interposed between pairs of links and between links and i members. If desired, a plurality of scissor linkages may be provided, and may be attached in spaced relationship along the grille bars such that a substantially continuous barrier may be formed with relatively long grille bars.
Preferably, the links and the grille bars are formed rc CC from aluminium such that the grille assembly may be relatively light for ease of operation and may be relatively immune to atmospheric corrosion effects.
The grille assembly includes guide means for controlling the path of the movement of the grille bars to and from one another such that they may move between the stowed position and the extended position in a desired travel path. The guide means may include a channel member whose flanges are engageable about the end portion of selected ones of the grille bars, and/or a guide flange member engageable within a slot formed in the end portions of selected grille bars. Suitably, the guide flange member may engage within the slot formed in the hollow prismatic member.
The grille assembly may include support means for supporting the grille assembly, and the support means may include a slide or a wheel attached to a selected grille bar at any desired location such as at the top or bottom thereof.
A support track may be provided for operation in conjunction with the slide or wheel. Suitably, the wheel is placed at the lower end of a grille bar, and may be placed within the slot therein. If desired the wheel may be adapted for engagement with the upper surface of the guide flange member for providing support for the grille bar.
In a further aspect, this invention resides in a method of forming a grille assembly, including:providing a plurality of grille bars formed as hollow rectangular members having slots along opposed faces; providing a scissor linkage interconnecting said grille bars and moveable between a stowed position in which said grille bars are disposed substantially adjacent one another and an extended position in which said grille bars and said scissor linkage form a barrier, said scissor links passing through said slots and including a link pivoted to one of said hollow rectangular members and having an end portion slidable within a further one of said hollow rectangular members; 6: and assembling said grille bars and said scissor linkage to form a grille assembly.
In order that this invention may be more easily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein:- FIG. 1 is a pictorial view of a grille assembly in the folded position; FIG. 2 is a pictorial view of the grille assembly shown in FIG. 1 in an extended position, and FIG. 3 is a partial top view of the grille assembly shown in FIG. 2.
The grille assembly 10 shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 vic 15 comprises a plurality of grille bar assemblies 12 connected by a pair of linkage assemblies 13. Each of the grille bar assemblies 12 is formed from a pair of extruded lipped channel members 14 joined at intervals by spacers 15 and rivets 16 forming slots 17 through which the linkage S 20 assemblies 13 may pass.
Each linkage assembly 13 comprises links 20 pivoted to the grille bar assemblies 12 at bar pivots 21. The ends of the links 20 connect about end pins 22 which are slidable within the channel members 14 between the lips thereof, and the ends of adjacent links 20 are connected by the end pins 22. Spacer washers 23 formed of nylon are placed between 7
I
links 20 on the end pins 22. Link pivot pins 24 join selected pairs of links 20 intermediate the bar pivots 21 and the end pins 22 to stabilise the linkage.
An end grille bar assembly 25 mounts to one wall 26 of an opening across which the grille assembly 10 may extend, and the outer grille bar assembly 27 carries a lock 30 which is engageable with a latch member (not shown) attached to the other wall of the opening.
Wheels 31 are mounted in the slots 17 at the lower ends of selected grille bar assemblies 12, and engage with the upstanding flange 32 of the lower track 33. A channel guide member 34 is attached to the upper edge of the opening.
The grille assembly 10 is installed by securing the end grile bar assembly 25 to one vertical wall of an opening, 15 securing the lower track 33 to the floor across the opening, and securing the channel guide member 34 to the upper edge of the opening in alignment with the lower track 32. A latch member is secured to the second vertical wall of the opening, and the grille assembly is ready for use.
In use, a user may close the grille assembly 10 by sliding it along the lower track 33 and the channel guide member 34, allowing the linkage assemblies 13 to fold out and extend across the openings between the grille bar assemblies 12. During the extension process, the pins 22 slide along the lipped channel members 14 towards the bar pivots 21 on the respective grille bar assembly 12.
4 8 It will of course be realised that while the above has been given by way of illustrative example of this invention, all such and other modifications and variations thereto as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of this invention as is defined in the appended claims.
