Actual Inventor: TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT Gregory Allan Shears 48 Stephanie Avenue WARILLA NSW 2528 Gregory Allan Shears ANDERSON-TAYLOR ASSOCIATES, Registered Patent Attorneys of 10 Harrison Avenue BONNET BAY N.S.W. 2226 Address for Service: Complete Specification for .the invention entitled: SELF ILLUMINATING FISHING APPARATUS S 1 -JThV'fIllpwing stptepntislkj.-i f zcription of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: SO I 7-916 1 79 619/ 10/90O i This invention relates to a lighting accessory for fishing, prawning or other activities.
The best time for fishing or prawning is often after dark and accordingly such activities require an efficient portable light source. The existing lights which are normally used are hand-held and are operated from battery power or propane gas bottles. By their very nature however hand-held lights are cumbersome to use when one is already manipulating fishing gear. Also, in the case of gas lamps there is the possibility of fire.
Accordingly this invention discloses a self illuminating handle comprising a rod having an operative end adapted for attachment to a scoop net, gaff oc the like, a light element mounted to said o*'o rod at or adjacent said operative end and a power source for said a *0 light incorporated within said rod, wherein said light element is mounted to the rod by means of a pair of brackets which clamp around the rod and extend out to form rings in which a housing for the' light element pivots.
Preferably the light is powered by electricity, although other power sources may also be used within the scope of this invention.
The currently preferred form of this invention will now be described with reference to'the attached representations in which: Figure 1 is a p-,'spective view of a self illuminating handle according to this concept, and 2i: JvlS f.
1 1 l l j ll l l l :j Figures 2 and 3 are detailed views of the mounting for the light eleme'ir.
Referring first to. figure 1 there is shown a handle comprising a rod 1 having a hand grip 2 at one end and a connector fitting 3 at the other. Part way back from the connector a spot-light 4 is fitted to the rod. This light is pivotal in a manner described later but is generally directed away from the hand grip and toward the operative end.
.1 The connector fitting 3 can be of any suit le type 1: and is adapted to releasibly engage a wide variety of titc s .fishing accessories such as scoop nets or gaffs etc.
As shown in figures 2 and 3 the preferred form of mounting for the light element may comprise a pair of bracket members 5 which clamp around th. rod adjacent 'connector 3 and extend out to form'suppor, rings 6 in which the light housing pivots by means of pins 7. The light may thus be directionally adjustable along the line of the rod to illuminate a net or gaff attached to the connector 3. The resistance of the pivot to movement can be adjusted by the user tightening the upper bolt or screw 8 which interconnects the two brackets. Preferably indents 9 are also formed on the inside faces of the rings to assist in holding the light at any desired position.
The lower screw 10 extends diagonally through the rod to secure the bracket against rotational movement.
The housing 11 for the light is preferably waterproof and will not be described in detail as its construction would be well within the knowledge of a person skilled in the art.
With the preferred embodiment the light element itself is electrical and power is pr6vided through a cable encased in a flexible waterproof sleeve 12 extending from the rear of the lamp housing to the interior of the adjacent section of rod. From this point the cable passes down the length, of the rod and connects through any suitable form of waterproof switch to one or more rechargeable t" batteries (not shown) housed within the hand grip 2.
Provision may also be made at the end of the hand grip for removing these batteries and/or connecting them to a power supply for recharging.
ittz It will thus be appreciated that this invention at least.
4: t in the form of embodiment described provides a novel and unique fishing or prawning accessory. Clearly however the particular example disclosed is only the currently preferred form of this invention and a wide variety of *1 modifications may be made which would be apparent to a _person skilled in the art. For example the shape and configuration of the light as well as the mechanism for mounting it in place may all be varied according to design preference or to adapt the concept to different implements. Also, while the use of a low voltage electric light is preferred the invention extends to the use of other power sources such as propane gas or oil etc.
