'614826 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA Patent Act 1952 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION
(ORIGINAL)
Class Int. Class Application Number Lodged PI 7739 14 April 1988 0 0 0 Complete Specification Lodged Accepted Published Priority: Related Art Name of Applicant Address of Applicant PETER JOHN YANNAKIS 19 Maitland Avenue, Kingsford, New South Wales, Australia Actual Inventor PETER JOHN YANNAKIS S Address for Service F.B. RICE CO., Patent Attorneys, 28A Montague Street, BALMAIN. 2041.
Complete Specification fox che invention entitled: "HAND HELD MASSAGING MACHINE" The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to Me:- S0067 7 14/04/89 tA 2 This invention relates to a hand held massaging machine. In particular the machine provides a unique massaging action which is very similar to manual therapeutic massaging techniques.
In one broad form the present invention can be said to provide a massaging machine including an elongate body handle and at least one reciprocating applicator adapted to comfortably contact localised portions of the body to be massaged and the reciprocating applicator is reciprocately driven by a mechanism within the body in a line substantially perpendicular to longitudinal axis of the body.
Preferably the massaging machine further includes a ,fixed applicator positioned adjacent the reciprocating 15 applicator.
0000 Preferably the massaging device is a portable hand 0000 held device having an electric rotary motor within the body and a rotary to reciprocating transmission device *0 09 e S. connected between the electric motor and a reciprocable shaft attached to the reciprocating applicator.
Preferably the applicators are removably fixed to the massaging device so that they can be replaced by O applicators of differing shape and configuration. In this o0,. case one preferred shape of the applicators is a convex part spherical applicator produced in a rubber or rubber like material. Another preferred shape of the applicator o:.e i3 a concave part spherical applicator again made from a 0000 rubber or rubber like material so as to form a cup type 000009 0 applicator. In another preferred applicator two ball type applicators are used for each of the fixed and reciprocable applicators.
It is also preferred that the reciprocating speed of the massaging machine be controllable.
By way of example only, an exemplary embodiment of I the invention will now be described with reference to the p t -3drawings which include: Fig. 1 being a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 showing an alternative attachment to the embodiment of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 showing a further alternative attachment; and Fig. 4 showing the Fig. 1 article in perspective.
The massaging machine includes a body portion 1 which is sized and shaped to be conveniently held in a single hand. Extending from one side of the body 1 are two shafts 6 arranged generally parallel to one another with one of the shafts 6 being reciprocable in the directions indicated by arrow 4. At the ends of the shafts 6 are ball shaped applicators 2 and 3. The applicator 2 will C.
15 reciprocate with reciprocation of its shaft 6.
The massaging machine includes within the body 1 a

se erotary electric motor which drives the reciprocating shaft 6 through a rotary to reciprocating transmission.
C°.e*C 9 The rotary to reciprocating transmission is conveniently a speed reduction gear set and crank wheel with an eccentrically held connecting rod leading from the crank wheel to a portion of the reciprocating shaft within the body 1. The reciprocating shaft is then held within a sleeve.
25 The drive between the motor and the applicator shaft 6 includes an adjustable lost motion device such as a fluid clutch. If the applicator is stalled by excessive pressure on the body 1 the motor will still rotate thus

Spreventing or at least greatly reducing, the possibility li of damage to motor windings.
Fig. 2 shows an alternatively shaped applicator 7 which is a generally cup shaped concave spherical applicator. The various applicators 2, 3 and 7 are interchangeable on their respective shafts 6. The -up shaped actuator 7 is particularly well adapted to 4 massaging people with congested lungs.
The applicators 2, 3 and 7 are all composed of rubber e1o04; C.
or rubber likek materials so as to apply the massaging lotion firmly, but not in a manner which will cause bruising or other damage to the body being massaged.
The unique massaging action of this device is obtained by virtue of one of the applicators 3 being held rigid relative to the body 1 while the other applicator 2 is reciprocately driven relative to the body i. The massaging device is used by holding both applicators 2 and 3 (or any combination of applicators 2, 3 and 7) with both applicators contacting the body. The speed of reciprocating action of the applicator 2 is controlled by a switch 5 fixed to the body i.
15 In the preferred embodiment the control switch 5 also allows for selection of a single impulse mode which provides a single sharp reciprocating stroke of the reciprocating shaft 6.

S6 Alternative actuators 8 are shown in Fig. 3. The actuator 8 comprises essentially two spaced apart actuators and are particularly well adapted to simultaneously massage down both sides of the spine.
The massage machine can be used with a single applicator, dispensing with the fixed applicator.
25 An alternative applicator not shown is a double pad applicator which places one pad on each temple of the person using the massage machine. The double pad applicator is attached to the reciprocating shaft and the a body 1 may be fixed to a stable support such as a bed head. When switched on the massage machine massages the temple region while the user is relaxed on their back.
