COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: "A FISH-CLEANING BRUSH" The following statement is a full description of the invention including the best method of performing it known to us.
t
J_
THIS INVENTION relates to a fish-cleaning brush.
All blood and gut must be quickly removed from the fish to prevent the flesh from becoming spoilt and thereby inedible. No effective cleaning aid is presently available and many fisherman have sought to dishwashing brushes but with limited success.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a fish-cleaning brush which can be connected to a water supply to wash out all the blood.
It is a preferred object to provide a brush 00 with a curved head which can strip any gut from the 0 0 flesh.
0 oooo0 It is a further preferred object to provide a o 0 0 15 brush where the bristles are configured to enter all °o crevices in the flesh which may contain blood or gut to 000.00 remove th! latter.
0 a It is a still further preferred object to 00oo0oo00 0 provide a brush which has a safety flange on the handle to protect the fishermen's hands against the spikes and scales on the fish.
0o0° In a preferred embodiment, the present o o 0 o~o invention resides in F. filsh-cleaning brush including- 0 a handle having a portion to be gripped at 25 one end; 0 0 0 a curved. head at the other end provided with 0 a plurality of bristles; 00o a passage through the handle connectable to 0 o a hose or other water supply to convey water to a nozzle b 0 in the head to direct water between the bristles; and a finger guard on the handle adjacent the portion to be gripped on the head; wherein: the head has a sole which is curved in side view and the bristles extend substantially radially outwardly from the sole of the head and are splayed apart in side view; 2
A
the bristles at a front end of the head, spaced from the handle, are shorter than, and provided in a greater number of rows than, the bristles at a rear end of the head.
Preferably, the handle is curved in side view and the hose is connected to the end of the handle.
The head may be formed integrally with, or be releasably removable from, the handle.

Preferably the stles at the front of the head are shor and provided in a sqgeater number of -ows,- Ranth bristlec at the roar of th a To enable the invention to be fully understood, preferred embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a side view of a first embodiment of the brush; FIG. 2 is a top rear view of the brush; FIGS. 3 to 5 are sectional end views taken at A, B and C respectively on FIG. 1; FIGS. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the 0o o. 15 handle portion of a second embodiment; and 0 0 0 0 FIGS. 8, 9 and 10 are top plan, sectional side 000000 o 0 and bottom plan views, respectively, of a head for the 00 0 °0 o handle, the bristles being omitted in FIG. 9.
oo0o Referring to FIGS. 1 to 5, the brush 10 has a 0 0 .ooooo 20 curved handle 11 with a central passage 12. The free 0 0 end of the handle has a threaded fitting 13 to receive the end of a water hose (not shown).
o00 a The portion 14 of the handle between the S°o°o fitting 13 and a peripheral finger guard 15 is gripped by the user and is protected from any spikes and/or o scales on the fish by the guard The side of the head 16 is upwardly curved so that it can be used in the fish with a "rocking" action 0o as it is moved back and forth to fully clean all the gut and blood. The passage 12 in the handle is connected to a nozzle 17 in the head which sprays the water through the bristles 18.
The forward bristles 19 are arranged in three columns of four rows across the head, and as shown in FIG. 1, are arranged radially to the curved head so that these are "splayed apart" in side view.

This enables the bristles to fully enter the spine cavity in the fish and remove any fat or blood thereon. The shorter front bristles 19 enable the brush head 16 to be pushed right up into the throat area behind the gills to remove any blood and gut in that area. The spacing between the bristles prevents the brush from clogging with gut or flesh.
Referring now to FIGS. 6 and 7, the brush has a handle 31 which is hollow and has a hose fitting 32 at one end and a finger guard 33 intermediate its length.
15 The other end of the handle is formed with an open-bottomed chamber 34 with a peripheral rim 35 to releasably receive the head 36 (see FIGS. 8 to The head 36 has a body 37 with a flange portion 38 arranged to receive, and sealably engage, the 20 peripheral rim 35 on the handle 31. A fastener, not shown, passes through a hole 39 in the handle and is screw threadably received in a threaded bore 40 to releasably receive the head 36 to the handle 31.
A water passage 41 passes through the body 37, 25 providing a nozzle for the water to flow over the bristles 42 fitted in the curved sole of the body.
As hereinbefore described the front rows of bristles 42a are shorter than the outer rear side rows of bristles 42b, which are in turn, shorter than the rear central row of bristles 42c.
The curved sole of the head and the bristle array provides the advantages hereinbefore described.
However, as the head 36 may be removed, alternative brush heads e.g. for cleaning cars or tiles or scrubbing brushes may be fitted to the handle 31.
L
111~ The brush may be moulded of suitable plastics material or manufactured from other materials as required. The brush provides a single, yet effective means for fully cleaning all the blood and gut from fish with full protection for the user.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the embodiments described without departing from the scope of the present invention defined in the appended claims.
