oC as Complete Specification for the invention entitled: FOLDING BASSINET
CARRIER
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- 1 ~I specification (Form 1U ana true copy 2 THIS INVENTION relates to a bassinet carrier.
In the transportation of infants, it has become common practice to utilise a bassinet having a rigid construction of the accommodation of infants whereby the bassinet is able to be readily transported and the infant is accommodated both comfortably and safely. Such bassinets are designed to be able to be fixed in motor vehicles utilising the vehicles' seat belts or like fixing means, however, the difficulty that has been experienced with such bassinets resides in the requirement that when out of the vehicle they must be constantly carried. This can create excessive strain when they are used to accommodate infants while the parent or guardian is engaged in shopping or similar activities.
It is an object of this invention to provide a means which will sa-fely accommodate a bassinet for transportation without the bassinet having to be physically carried.
In one form the invention resides in a bassinet carrier wherein the bassinet to be carried is formed with a downwardly directed opening or socket at each side thereof towards at least one and, and a pair of transversely Sdirected spigots towards the other end, said bassinet carrier comprising a wheeled base and a support means for engaging and supporting the bassinet said support means being movable in relation to the base between a collapsed position closely adjacent the base and a raised position, S said support means comprising a first support for o receiving the transversely directed spigots when the support means is in the raised position said support means further comprising a second support and a pair of upwardly directed spigots which when the support means is in the raised position are engagable with the openings or sockets.
c i, I l 4 1 -N lnr tar x I- I' (IMPORTANT Cross out iiialpplicnabl words; in the ahiove Form,! :1 -II I The invention will be more understood in the light of the following description of one specific embodiment. The description is made with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bassinet carrier according to the embodiment in the cot carrying position; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the embodiment in the folded position; and SFigure 3 is a plan view of the embodiment in the So0 o folded position.
0 S The embodiment is directed to a bassinet carrier for use with bassinets 11 of the type being sold under the trade mark "SAFE-N-SOUND". Such bassinets 11 are formed from a rigid plastics material and are formed at one end at least with a downwardly extending skirt 12 and towards its other end with a pair of transversely extending spigots 13.
The carrier comprises a substantially U-shaped base frame 14 wherein the central web portion is located towards the one end of the frame and a pair of wheels 15 are mounted in castor-like fashion towards the one end of the frame 14. The one end of the frame also supports at its sides a pair of upstanding brackets 26 which pivotally support between them a first frame 17 for pivotal movement about a first axis 18 which is substantially transverse to the base frame 14. The other end of the base frame 14 pivotally supports a second frame 17 which is pivotal about a second axis 19 which is transverse to the frame 1.4.
4 The first frame comprises a pair of parallel side members 16 interconnected at their outermost end by a substantially U-shaped strut 20 which extend obliquely, from the outermost portion of the side members when upright 16. The outer end of side member 16 is formed with a substantially upright U-shaped stirrup 21 which are each shaped and spaced from each other such that they will engage the transverse spigots 13 extending to each side of the bassinet 11.
The second frame 17 supports at its outer end a transverse upright and substantially U-shaped member 22 which is located transversely on the rear frame. The upwardly S directed arms 27 of the U-shaped frame 22 are adapted to be received between the body of the bassinet 11 and the downwardly extending skirt 12 around the one end of the S bassinet. Suitable padding material is provided on the upwardly directed arms of the U-shaped member 22 of the S.second frame 17 and the U-shaped stirrups 21 of the first frame 16.
2o As shown at Figure 1, when the first and second frames 16 S'o and 17 are raised to the substantially upright position, a bassinet of the form described above can be accommodated on the frame and positively located therein without fear of accidental dislodgement. To facilitate storage of the bassinet carrier when not in use or when it is to be °o carried in a vehicle, the first and second frames 16 and 17 are pivotable on the base frame 14 to overlie the base frame as shown in figures 2 and 3. To effect such, the first frame will pivot on the base frame 14 to be directed rearwardly while the second frame will pivot on the base frame 14 to be directed forwardly. The second frame 17 at its l ower end accommoates the rear wheels 23 of the carrier which are supported upon a transversel.y directed axle mounted between the lowermost ends of the arms on the second frame 17.
The U-shaped strut 20 which is mounted to the upper end of the side arms 16 is provided with a pair of loops 23 along its uppermost surface which can be used to accommodate straps (not shown) which can be placed over the bassinet and engaged with the second frame 17 to hold the bassinet in position on the carrier.
The second frame slidably supports a handle 24 which will extend upwardly from the carrier when the rear frame 17 is in its upright position. The handle 24 is slidable on the oo Bsecond frame 17 such that it can be moved inwardly from the second frame 17 prior to the second frame being lowered onto the base frame 14 for storage purposes.
It should be appreciated that the scope of the present i- invention is not limited to the particular embodiments herein described.
