Actual Inventor; Maurie WAHNER Address for Service: CLEMENT HACK CO.,, 601 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne, Victoria 3004, Australia, Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A CONTAINER The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it J nowa to me:- 1- L 9499 6 9 e* 6 paint.
a o A CONTAINER The present invention relates to a container and, in *o particular, the present invention relates to a container for paint.
0 Increasingly, manufacturers of containers are being required to comply with stricter standards for containers used in the transport of dangerous goods such as paints. It is likely that, in the future, the conventional so-called "triple-tight" containers, widely used for transporting paint, will not comply with the standards, and thus there will be a need for a new form of container for paints.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a container for paint comprising: a base, a tubular body having a rim defining an opening to the container and an external bead, fi ,p _GRIFFITH HACK CO PATENT AN D TRADE MARK ATTORNEYS M E L B O U R N E S Y D N E Y P ER T H a cover to close the opening, the cover having a rim, and a sealing band to hold the cover in position to close the opening, the sealing band having a lower curled rim, as described herein, which contacts either one or both the rim and the external bead of the tubular body.
The term "curled rim" when used in connection w.th the sealing band is herein understood to mean a rim in which the free edge of the sealing band is bent back or otherwise formed so that it contacts a section of the sealing band. The term "curled rim" when used in connection with other parts ecIcV of the container is understood herein to have a similar meaning.
c 9It is preferred that the sealing band contacts at C, least the rim of the tubular body.
It is preferred that the rim of the tubular body c t, is curled.
C JC It is preferred that the tubular body is tapered c c so that the container defines a pail.
It is preferred that the container further comprises means to retain the cover and the sealing band in a preassembled condition so that in use when the container is being assembled the cover and the sealing band can conveniently be located as a single pre-assembled unit, It is preferred that the retaining means comprises a plurality of dimples in the sealing band.
j It is also preferred that the cover further comprises an upper curled riaz to contact an outwardly directed section of the rim of the cover.
It is preferred that the container further comprises an annulus of sealing material positioned between the rim of the cover and an upper section of the curled rim of the tubular body. According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a container for paint comprising: a base, 1 ll~~TP a tubular body having a rim defining an opening to the container and an external bead, and a sealing band to hold the cover in position to close the opening, the sealing band havingan upperand a lower curled rim, as described herein.
It is preferred that the lower curled rim of the sealing band contacts either one or both of the rim and the external bead of the tubular body. In a particularly preferred arrangement the lower curled rim of the sealing band contacts at least the curled rim of the tubular body.
c c It is preferred that the upper curled rim of the ~sealing band contacts an outwardly directed section of the rim of the cover.
It is pzx.erred that the tubular body is tapered so that the container defines a pail.
It is preferred that the container further comprises S means to retain the cover and the sealing band in a pre-assembled condition so that in use when the container is being assembled ort the cover and the sealing band can conveniently be located as a single pre-assembled unit. It is preferred that the retaining means comprises a plurality of dimples in the sealing band.
O Further description of the present invention is now o% provided with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a preferred embodiment of a container formed in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a detailed view, in section along the line 2-2 in Figure 1, of the upper part of the container shown in Figure 1 with another container stacked on the container.
In the figures is shown a paint container generally identified by the numeral 1. The container comprises a base 7, a tubular body 9, a releasable cover 11 and a sealing band 13 to hold together the tubular body 9 and the cover 11 in the closed position shown in the figures.
4- I 1 I-~---*~wrraaa~ The tubular body 9 I.s circular in transverse section, although it can readily be appreciated that the invention is not limited to any particular sectional configuration for the tubular body 9. The tubular body 9 is of generally constant diameter alorg its length, with the exception of the lower section w:iich tapers inwardly and terminates in a circular flange extending downwardly from the base 7 of the container.
r i' The tubulF.r body 9 comprises a curled rim 15 which 10 defines the opening into the container 1. The tubular body r cc further comprises two external beads 17 and 18. As will be described hereinafter the external bead 17 co-operates with the sealing band 13 to hold the cover 11 in the closed position shown in Figure 2. The external bead 18 acts as a reinforcing rib.
The cover 11 is formed to fit snuggly into the opening defined by the curled rim 15 of the tubular body 9 thereby to seal the contents in the container 1. In this regard, with t reference to Figure 2, the cover 11 comprises a section 19
C
which extends across the opening and a rim generally identified by the numeral 21.
oOa 5 The section 19 comprises an upstanding circular o« ridge 23 that divides it into a relatively nar:ow annular strip 25 and a slightly concave central section 27. As can best be seen in Figure 2 the ridge 23 and the annular strip define means to locate another container on the cover 11 when that other container is stacked thereon.
The rim 21 of the cover 11 comprises: a generally upstanding section 29 which contacts the rim 15 of the tubular body 9; an outwardly directed section 31; and an inwardly directed section 33. The upstanding section 19 has a slightly widened region that extends partially into the external bead 17 of the tubular body 9, thereby to assist in retaining the cover 11 in the closed position shown in the figures. Further, as will be described hereinafter, the 5 ii 'i :r a i ii i I t outwardly directed section 31 of the cover 11 is formed to co-operate with the sealing band 13 to hold the cover 11 in the closed position shown in the figures.
The sealing band 13 is formed to be clenched around the upper section of the container 1, as is shown in Figure 2.
The sealing band 13 comprises: a lower curled rim 35 positioned to bear against either or both the curled rim 15 and the external bead 17 of the tubular body 9; and an upper curled rim 37 positioned to bear against the outwardly directed section 31 of the rim 21 of the cover 11.
The container 1 further comprises a means 39 to retain the cover 11 and the sealing band 13 in a pre-assembled cct condition so that in use the cover 11 and the sealing band 13 can conveniently be located in position on the tubular body 9 during assembly of the container 1. In the figures, the means 39 comprises a plurality of dimples in the cover S" 11, although it can readily be appreciated that any suitable t',od means could bc used. In addition, it may be appropriate to form the means 39 to have an additional structural function of co-operating with the upper and lower curled rims 37, 35 of the sealing bead 13 to clamp securely the sealing band 13 in the closed position shown in the figures.
The container 1 further comprises an annulus 41 of 4 o" sealing material positioned between the rim 21 of the cover 11 and the upper section of the curled rim 15 of the tubular i body 9. The annulus 41 may be formed from any suitable sealing material.
In use, the container 1 is filled with paint to the required level and the cover 11 is positioned to close the opening, as is shown in Figure 2. In this regard, the (imensions of the cover 11 may be selected so that the cover 11 is a press fit with respect to the rim 15 of the tubular body 9. The sealing bead 13 is positioned around the upper t section of the container I and is clenched so that it is G clamped into the position shown in Figure 2. As the clamping 6 17 i I i oc
G
4 pressure is increased to the required level, the lower curled rim 35 of the sealing bead 13 is progressively drawn into the gap G between the curled rim 15 and the external bead 17 of the tubular body, and the upper curled rim 37 of the sealing bead 13 is progressively drawn into contact witL the outwardly directed section 31 of the rim 21 of the cover 11. When the sealing band 13 is tightened to the required level the sealing band is releasably secured in the tightened position. The container 1 can then safely be transported to the retail outlet for purchase.
cc In situations where there is a need to open the container 1 at the retail outlet to add tinter to the paint the sealing band may be formed to be resealed around the container 1.
15 The use of the curled rims 15, 35, 37 significantly improves the strength of the components and thereby increases the resistance to deformation in the event the container 1 is dropped from a number of different attidudes.
It can readily be appreciated that whilst the 20 preferred embodiment has been described in relation to the storage of paint the invention is not so limited and could oo be used in relation to other dangerous and non-dangerous goods.
a a In this regard, the container of the invention is not restricted to any particular volumes of liquids.
Many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
