NUMBER: PI 0195/87 05 Feb 87 FILING DATE: FORM COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA The Patents Ac 1 1952 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR AN INVENTION ENTITLED: IMPROVED VOUCHERS The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: -1- Li 1 i, *000 o a oc 0 00 0 0t

Normally, the vouchers required for such purchases are multiple copy vouchers and it has been quite conventional that the copies be obtained either by the use of interleaved sheet transfer material which normally has a backing sheet on which there is applied a layer of transfer material, which is often refered to as carbon paper or, colloquially singly as carbon, or by the use of carbonless or no carbon required paper.
For security purposes, it is undesirable that carbon paper be used as the carbon paper sheets are normally removed from their interleaved position and placed in a waste basket or the like and this means that the purchaser's name and number are available to any person who can gather the contents of a waste basket and it would be possible, from this information, to be able to duplicate cards and use various card facilities.
This problem is not critical where carbonless papers are used as each of the voucher sheets is either retained initially by the merchant, before the processor's copy is onforwarded, or handed to the card holder at the time of the transaction.
However, there are applications where carbonless papers are not satisfactory and this is particularly so where the voucher is to be read by an optical character recognition reader (OCR) as the image from a carbonless paper is such as to cause a high rejection rate.

The invention includes a voucher having at least tvo leaves and a layer of transfer material between the or at least one pair of leaves to permit information impressed onto one leaf of the pair being transfered to the other leaf of the pair the transfer material being in two separate portions one of which is connected to or in connection with one leaf of the pair and the other being restrained in a location between the leaves of the pair so that the portions together overlay the surface of the leaf beneath the transfer material and to which information is to be transferred, the arrangement of the leaves of the pair and the transfer material being such that relevant information transfered by the transfer material is partially on one of the separate portions and partially on the other separate portions so that, when the leaves are separated, the total information cannot be positively ascertained where there are portions of transfer material from more than one voucher.
It is preferred that the separation occurs after the end of the cardholder's name but before the end of the card number, but between two numerals of the card number, so that there is nothing which can enable direct matching of the transfer material components.
Where transfer material are used between each of the pairs of leaves of the vouchers, each carbon can be split in the same manner and at the same relative position so that none of the transfer material can readily be matched.
MultiformI/52/Oct90 It will be appreciated that the use of the invention makes it difficult, when a number of portions of transfer material are collected together, for t~c t

In order that the invention may be more readily understood, we shall describe, in relation to the accompanying drawings, one particular form of voucher made in accordance with the invention.
In these drawings: 0 Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a voucher with the top sheet 0 S° removed therefrom; a o 0 Fig. 2 shows, in solid line, the appearance of the face of a 0 voucher; and Fig. 3 is a view along the edge of the voucher of Fig. 2.
The voucher 10 can be considered to be the type of voucher used, for example, in Bankcard, Visa and Mastercard which has four leaves being, a cover sheet 11, a processor's copy 12, a cardholder's copy 13 and a i merchant's copy 14, which sheets are aligned and held together in that or some other order. The leaves of the voucher are preferably connected, as at 15, along an edge margin beyond a slit line 16 along which the leaves can be separated.
In the particular form of voucher to be described, the cardholder's copy 13 and the merchant's copy 14 will be considered to be of carbonless paper, so -i there is no need for any carbon to be placed between the processor's copy 12 and the cardholder's copy 13 or between the cardholder's copy 13 and the NS Multiforml 52/Oct90 merchant's copy 14.
However, this is purely a preferment and if, for reasons of economy, or for other reasons, it is required that carbon paper be used between these copies, then the carbon will be located in effectively the same way as the carbon is, as will be described, located between the cover sheet 11 and the processor's copy 12.
In the particular embodiment, we will assume that the processor's copy is e o to be used with an OCR and, in order to provide the best possible image for ^:'BOo an OCR, we use a carbon which is designed to give a dense deposit of OCR :carbon coating which may be provided by a transfer sheet having a carbon 9 emulsion coated on a sensitive tissue to provide a dense image.
In this way, notwithstanding poor quality cards or imprinters, a satisfactory Bos image is transferred to the processor's copy.
o a 009 O* o Also, to aid in OCR reading, we may prefer to provide the paper of the o°"o processor's copy as one which contains no optical brighteners, as the addition of these tend to cause a deterioration in the effectiveness of an 0a OCR when reading the paper.
9 99 o ,The form of transfer sheet and paper are, of course, preferments.
The crux of the invention lies in the physical formation of the carbon sheet and its location in the voucher.
The carbon is formed from two parts and one part 20 of this is adhesively secured at 21 to the between the cover sheet and the processor's copy adjacent the inner, left end thereof and preferably beyond the slit line 16 so that, when the voucher leaves are separated, this carbon component Rt o t 5 T Multiforml/52/Oct90 remains adhered in the sheet formed by the edges 22 of the leaves which are interconnected.
The other part of the carbon 23 is adhered to the cover sheet at 24 and (as illustrated) so adhered towards the right side thereof.
Thus, when the voucher leaves are separated from the side at which they are interconnected, this portion of the carbon remains connected to the cover sheet 11 and is disposed of with the cover sheet.
j Thus it will be seen that the carbon disposed of in respect of each voucher o* is in two portions, the inner portion 20 being that connected beyond the slit cosaop o line 16 to the left edges of each of the adjacent voucher leaves which are a S° interconnected to form the voucher and the outer portion 23 being that which is connected to the cover sheet.
I It will be seen that where there have been a number of vouchers used, this oo will mean that there will be an equal number of inner portions and outer portions of carbon thrown to waste but, provided the division is such that S0o the whole of the purchaser's name and portion of the card number are on a one piece of carbon and the rest of the card number is on the other piece, <a o then there is no way that an accurate estimate of which two pieces of carbon must be combined to show this can be achieved.
Thus it is not possible for any person, by obtaining access to the waste components, to be able to identify correct card numbers with the names of the cardholders, and this increases the security of the card.
Whilst we have described herein a voucher which has transfer sheet material between the leaves, it is possible to use multiple carbon sheets, in R4-6- Multiforml/52/0ct90 A
IL
which case, the outer portions of the following sheets of carbon would need to be adhered to the backs of the associated voucher leaves and to be removed therefrom before these leaves are further transmitted, whilst the inner portions would be connected to the leaves adjacent their junction, as was described in respect of the carbon sheet of the embodiment fully described herein, i i r t «a 1A 0 0* 0 0 0 o 0 B p 0001 4 1 1
