Complete Specification for the invention entitled: BAR RACKS The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 8002A:rk I- i 2 BAR RACKS This invention relates to bar racks.
This invention relates more particularly to adjustable cantilever bar racks for storage of lengths of materials which comprise spaced uprights and horizontal beams acorss which the material is supported. The open structure allows materials to be placed on the beams using fork lift trucks for example.
According to the invention there is provided an adjustable bar rack comprising a plurality of spaced apart uprights and one or more horizontal beams anchored to each upright, wherein each upright has a slot extending down a face thereof to define flanges on either side of the slot, 0 0 each beam has a base plate at one end for anchoring the oooo beam to the slotted face of an upright, the base plate 4050 extending at least substantially across the width of the S0e, f'o*(0 face, an anchor plate is associated with each beam and is positioned inside the respective upright and extends substantially across the width of said face of the upright, and fixing means is associated with each beam and o extends through the slot in the respective upright to clamp the base plate and anchor plate together about the flanges.
The box-like upright may be formed from two U-shaped channels which are joined at their top and bottom ends to define a box section upright, the flanges of the U-shaped 1:38 channels on at least one side being spaced from one another to define the slot.
The fixing means may each comprise a nut and bolt for clamping together the base plate and anchor plate.
Each nut or each bolt may be welded or otherwise secured to the base plate or anchor plate respectively.
A cantilevered bar rack according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: 0 0963s/EM 3 Fig 1 is a side view of the rack; Fig 2 is a sectioned side view of part of the rack; and Fig 3 is a sectioned top view of Fig 2.
Refering to the drawing, the bar rack consists of a number of uprights 10 (only one of which Is shown) spaced apart each having a support base 11 and a number of beams 12 fixed at adjustable heights above the base for supporting lengths of material, such 0 00 as steel rods or lengths of electrical cable.
The uprights 10 are box-like in section, see Fig 3, and formed by 0 09 0two U-channels 13 and 14 joined at the top and bottom and separated from one another to form longitudinal slots 15 and 16 extendingi virtually the whole height of the upright at each Side- *Each beam 12 has a base plate 17 welded to one end which extends at least substantially over the external width of the upright 0 ooand to above the beam, see Figures 2 and 3. An anchor plate 18 ~:is provided for each beam which extends across the inner width of the upright and has two nuts 19 welded thereto, Bolts 20 extend through the anchor plate 17 and the slot 15 to fit the nuts 19.
0::::When tightened, the bolts 20 force the plates 17 and 18 towards each other and hence clamp the beam at a chosen vertical position 0:09*: to the upright The plate 18 fits across the whole Inner width of the upright while being slidable in the upright to allow the height of the beam to be adjusted when the bolts 20 are loosened. However, it will be noted that because the plates 18 extend over the inner width of the upright 10, the load applied by the beam 11 to the upright 10 causes at least predominently shear stress in the flanges of the upright, applying little or no bending stress thereto. Thus, the applied load is resisted by the strongest part, that is the channels or webs of the upright so that smaller rU 0 _1 lit 1 C. I.nUr- N rniJ w- gauge (and weight) steel sections can be used for the bar racks than with prior art arrangements and hence lower costs achieved.
It will be appreciated that a second series of beams may be fitted to the opposite side of the uprights utilising the slots 16 for passage of the clamping bolts 20 for such second series.
The support beams may be provided with cross members extending o,;o between them suitably spaced to enable pallets to be supported and stored on the bar rack.
