COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA Patents Act15206 COMPLETE SPE Cli'CAlN
(ORIGINAL)
r~fin to FOR OFFICE USE, Class Int, Cla~ss Application Number Lodged Complete Application No.
Specification Lodged Published 'p ~j0 Priority: Related art, Name of Applicant: Address of Applicant: Actual Inventor: TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GAS COMPANY IMTTE,,D 35 Waymouth Street, Adelaide, state of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia WALTER IWANICKI and MANOHAR PAT IL Address for Service: CO)LLlSON CO., Patent Attorneys, 117 King WIlIliam Street, Adelaide, South Australia, 5000, Complete Specification for the Invention entitled: "FLUELESS COMBUSTION SAFETY SYSTEM" The following statement is a full description of this Invention, including the best method of performing it known to>" us: A000244 25/07/88 1, 2 3JUL R8 LSC)Ujj.-t AUS.TRAUA This invention relates to a flueless combustion safety system, more particularly for flueless domestic heaters, Flueless gas and liquid fuel heaters are often used in domestic dwellings, and are often used in a closed room to heat the same. However, one of the dangers of such heaters is that due to the combustion there Is an increasing 1 0 level of carbon monoxide gas and if this rises to a high level, fatalities can occur due to the lack of oxygen.
Also other pollutants can accumulate in the air In a room, for example oxides of nitrogen such as nitrogen dioxide; formaldehyde and other pollutants.
Various systems are known in order to provide a security system for a gas appliance, and these Include the use of a thermocouple on which the pilot light impinges and any reduction of the length of the flame results in the cooling of the thermocouple, and another system utilizes the use of a sensing probe in the exhaust gases. A further system utilizes a safety device to interrupt the gas supply to a burner when the burner temperature is too low, or the level of ambient oxygen is too low, this comprising a thermocouple which is subjected to the action of a meta-stable flame and develops a sufficient E.M.F. under normal operating conditions to keep open an electromagnetic cut-off valve There is a further system in which the gas heater has a reverse flow protection device in the exhaust return path operating the supply valve to close it if an exhaust gas back wash or build up of unburnt gas occurs.
While these are satisfactory in various situations, it is an object of this invention to provide a system whereby the fuel supply to a flueless combustion heater may be terminated upon the atmospheric air surrounding the heater reaching a predetermined level of a pollutant or pollutants.
Thus there is provided according to the invention a flueless combustion heater, the heater comprising a fluid fuel fired burner, sensor means in the combustion air inlet to the burner, said sensor means directly measuring the level of pollutants in the air and producing electrical output signals, a microprocessor monitoring and analysing said signals and when a predetermined level of a pollutant or pollutants is reached forwarding a control 3 signal to an actuator to close a fuel control valve in a fuel line leading to said burner, In order to more fully describe the invention reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing which shows one form of the Invention, 1 0 In a preferred form of the Invention the heater 1 can be a flueless gas combustion heater for use in situations for heating a room or an area and there is provided a valve 2 in the gas supply line 3 which is actuated by an actuator 4 under the control of a microprocessor 1 5 In the air inlet passage to the gas heater 1 there is provided a sensing unit 6 to determine the level of pollutants, For example this sensing unit can include a sensor 7 to determine the level of carbon monoxide in the air, this sensor 7 being associated with a thermister 8 to determine the temperature of the incoming air. This thermlster 8 operates in conjunction with the carbon monoxide sensor 7 to give a correct reading of the carbon monoxide in the air, due to the fact that the sensitivity of a carbon monoxide sensor 7 varies with the temperature of the air being sensed, The outputs of the carbon monoxide sensor 7 and the thermister 8 are then fed to the microprocessor 5 which then upon the desired reading being obtained actuates the actuator 4 to close the gas supply valve 2.
The sensing unit 6 can be provided with sensors 9 and 10 to sense a plurality of pollutants, such as oxides of nitrogen including nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde and carbon dioxide, all the sensors 7, 9 and 10 and the thermister 8 being connected to the microprocessor In one example when the concentration of carbon monoxide reaches a level of P.P.M. then the gas flow wculd be terminated, or if the nitrogen dioxide reaches a level of 0.15 P.P.M. or if the level of formaldehyde reaches 1.5 per cent, then initiation occurs to close the gas supply valve. Also if the level of carbon dioxide reaches 1.5 per cent then the gas supply valve would be closed.
While the invention is particularly adapted to flueless gas heaters, it also could be applied to other combustion heaters, such as internal water heaters and _i I _i kerosene heaters In which the supply would be terminrated on the levels being reached.
While one form of the invention has been described in some detail it is to be realized that the Invention is not to be limited thereto but can Include various modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
